They Came from Beyond Space (1967)
Another OffBeat Cinema Saturday Night Special!
OffBeat Cinema has a "movie" each week which is, well, offbeat! That's why this gets a "5" rating from me because I watch with tongue in cheek to see how bizarre the stuff they find and show can get. And, actually this wasn't that "offbeat" compared to much of the other stuff.
I'll leave the technical movie stuff to the movie techies. For me, this was pure sci-fi cheese which is exactly the mood I was in sitting at home on a Saturday night. I'm trying to imagine watching it in 1967 terms and it might have been o.k. for a 10 year old at the Saturday Matinée.
If you want to be amused by some unreal sci fi, and you bring your imagination and sense of humor, this is a fun way to pass time. Based on standards of "good sci-fi movies," however, you'll probably want something that had a better (read: BIGGER) budget. Probably not unlike the actors and director in this film did.
29 Palms (2002)
Cool Quirkiness
Not everyone likes this genre, but those who liked Bahgdad Cafe, Six-string Samarai, the Singing Detective, and other cult-following favorites, will like 29 Palms.
The talent in this movie is a strong cast of non-superstars you'll immediately recognize and they all do a great job -- many of them stepping into unusual character types compared to their usual Hollywood roles. My hat is off to them for (1) their performances and (2) stepping up and wanting to do this film. I love this genre and scour the variety pages looking for something up this alley.
If you don't care for the quirky, existential-type, low-budget, rights of passage stories, you may want to pass (see the negative reviews, for instance). As for me, it is just my cup of tea, and I'd like a refill please!
