Weak just weak, irresolute even.
10 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
There are some spoilers in here but much like the film they are vague. I'm a big Spielberg fan, who isn't, but come on! This movie had some good moments, but they were few and far between. Yes the original was great, the book great but having only one an A story to follow that builds up this huge enemy and their immense power and then tagging on a bunch of un-established conclusions in the last ten minutes to wrap up the film sucks. I'm sorry it just does. I had to explain to those I was with at the theater why the aliens were dead! And the son just suddenly appears back at the house in Boston, "hey Dad, remember that big ball of flame that killed everyone well not me, I made it home on my own, don't ask how, just accept it". Plus I would have been a bit more frightened of the psycho in the basement if he didn't start out with the cheesy B movie -I'm frightening so I'll step into this spooky light and stand here for an unnatural amount of time to establish that fact- shot. I'm all for that kind of thing in a 'Sin City' vibe or a ' Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' feel. It was a shot that didn't fit for me. But who am I right. Not Steven Spielberg, but this movie isn't either. The film struggled to get me to suspend my disbelief and as soon as it did it gave me the (expletive-est) ending ever. I could care less about Tom Cruise, I love knowing that a Spielberg film will never disappoint, will be a complete well paced story. I left this movie feeling robbed. Fine, be true to the original story but please, please, be honest to the audience above all. This was a bad movie.

Finally a really good film!
2 December 2004
The best film I've seen in at least two years. I WAS TOTALLY PREPARED TO NOT LIKE THIS FILM. The title made me fear that my favorite director had created a chick flick. This movie is amazing, the story is set up quickly and suddenly your running along with this amazing tale that sucks you in and fills you with hope, reminds you that no matter what others may think it is up to you to never give up. I can't wait till it's in theaters so I can see it again, and I can't wait till it's on DVD so I can own it. Maybe supremely jaded people might not like this film, they'll hide behind expensive words to mask the fact that, in life, they gave up. And this move is a reminder that they didn't have to. You need to see this movie, your family and friends do too, heck bring the dog. I'm so glad it's not a chick flick, and I'm so glad that Jean-Pierre Jeunet's craft continues to escalate with each film he does. MM.

Van Helsing (2004)

How can you not love this film! It was cheesy tastic. Those who are complaining obviously don't understand or know the classic genre of black and white horror that is being recreated here, only with killer CG and wicked fight sequences.

Finally someone made a cool and believable were-wolf transformation.

You know that's what they're going for right from the opening, and they ride the line expertly. Steven Sommers wasn't "Overwhelmed" like a lot of you - " I was raise on teen horror flick" Nay sayers are spouting off about. Sommers used classic villains and classic story telling all the way through. From the expository "Let's recap who we all are and what we all do" scene, to villagers too stupid for their own good and Gremlin esque demon children. Yes I laughed, but I jumped in my seat a couple times too. I loved this film. I should note I hated Underworld with a passion. If you love classic horror flicks you'll love this film. It will definitly get a cult following, and it's super entertaining. It's classic.

To those who didn't like it, get out of your basement and rent some classic horror flicks instead of "She's all That".

Daredevil (2003)
Who knew this movie would be good.
29 March 2003
Warning: Spoilers
As I ran- literally- to catch the 7:20 show of DareDevil Off Hollywood in that theatre next door to Men's theatre. I was really torn "Was this a movie worth running to see?" So I walked the rest of the way and almost didn't go at all. Who knew it would be good. The cameos were classic, Stan Lee-that was dope- Mark wasn't a surprise but ya gatta love the guy cause chances are he'll hire you some day. The humor was well done -not too much and spaced out. It's more than an action flick without loosing focus. Ben Afflec... Let's just say my pre pubescent life philosophies were picked from marvel comics the one that stay's with me is this one were DareDevil's carrin this torch through hell and fighting through thousands of demons- but he succeeds and the end caption reads "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger". This in mind I was ready to hate anyone who would try and fill that classic comic moment. Ben kicked ass- who knew- I mean really, he did a dope job- I can't think of anyone else doin this character now- he just was blind, crime fighter, Matt. Mark brought his A game to the project in writing and directing. Mark if your readin this What were you thinking with J and Silent Bob strike back? No really email me cause I bet it was crazy fun to make but that was the first time I walked out of a theatre and asked for my money back. Anyway- Jennifer Garner. The fact that she is incredibly hot and has incredible eye's aside- she is super talented, As cheesy and unbelievable as it would have been (spoiler coming up) I wish she had survived some how, I need her to be in sequels. I hope she does more film, her dedication to training for this film totally showed on Camera- For her and Ben. Michael Clarke Duncan, I'm a big fan of this guy in general, how kick ass is it he got cast I thought. I don't know who's idea it was to have (spoiler up ahead) the King Pin squeal like a little girl but the whole idea behind this guy is that he never show's weakness even when he's lost. I felt robbed, cheated. But hey maybe Mark just wanted to Make the "win" that much bigger. So Overall I liked it I would have loved it if A. I hate dark overchoppy, we don't see anything but you try to trick us into thinking we did action sequences. It's like an epileptic version of a Jackie chan flick when "Matt" goes after a rapist at the top of the film. B. I have truly begun to hate the use of CG for CG's sake. CG people look fake and rob the moment by pulling you out. I want to believe DareDevil is leaping up an alleyway or that Bull's eye just got flung from a motorcycle. If you can't show it looking real then don't show it at all- imaginations work much better that fake effects. Collin Farrell was great, and Joe as always is effortless.

In the end I'm glad I saw it, it was way to over hyped, with the specials and the televised dinner chat (though that was interesting) that I figured, coupled with the overly generous previews I'd seen the movie. I wasn't all wrong but this movie didn't suck, in fact it was pretty good. Worth seeing on a big screen. Go see it, run walk whatever, just go. I don't get why this movie didn't do better number's. Overall it was well done. Plus they keep Daredevil gritty thumbs up.
