The Swordsman (1992)
4/10
Watchable but not terrific.
21 March 2005
Not one of Lorenzo Lamas' best movies, but watchable. Predictably fights joined together by story with sex thrown in. It could have been better. I wouldn't liken it to Highlander at all except that they both contain sword fights - although the fighting music made me think of HL. If you want to see the outtakes, watch the sequel 'Gladiator Cop' which seems to have been put together almost entirely from the cutting room floor. The story is different enough to separate this film from other such 'B' grade movies which struggle to have a story at all. Will it make you truly believe in re-incarnation (which always seems to be of the famous)? I doubt it.

Gladiator Cop (1995)

An interesting exercise from the cutting room floor

This film has more cheek than any I have seen. It seems to be made almost entirely from left over footage from The Swordsman. It is like watching outtake footage. The plot has been extended to include a new baddie, but the relationship between the two main characters bounces around in context all over the place, continuity is almost non-existent and you keep wondering where in time and space the activity is happening. I guess this is recycling taken to new levels. However watching The Swordsman and then Gladiator Cop is an interesting exercise in picking up what you have seen already, what really belongs in the first film and why you aren't doing something more productive.

The Disciples (1999 TV Movie)
Really bad movie
21 September 2002
I watched this on cable the other day waiting for it to improve. The dialogue was unbelievably bad, the humour so missed its mark it reminded me of Batman & Robin on TV or The Cisco Kid old series. I normally like this genre of film but this one is just BAD. (I'm not sure I've ever seen Ice-T in a movie and been able to believe his character.)

Continuity is not an issue.
15 June 2001
I'm happy to accept the limitations of B grade movies. However, this movie is just plain careless in its continuity e.g. parachutists who change their chute before they land. The movie uses stock footage of navy manoeuvres that it tries to force to fit the plot. The same oil storage facility is blown up at both the beginning and end of the film (and it's completely irrelevant to any plot at the end). And for some reason our 'hero' actually stands before a sunrise/sunset at the end (which does blend in with the other corny moments which are supposed to make us relate to the character). Give this one a miss.

Nick Knight (1989 TV Movie)

A good yarn that keeps you guessing.

This is my favourite movie. I know that sounds pathetic, but the first time I watched it, it kept me guessing. Most movies are predictable. Of course it only worked the first time I watched it, but I never knew if the vampire was good or bad until well into the movie and thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie. I was disappointed at that time to find it was a pilot which of course leaves room for more at the end. I thought the music was great and actually tracked down (it was of course by then getting old) some of the CDs. It was disappointing that 'Forever Knight' the series that followed didn't keep to the high standard set by this pilot, although I've still watched all the episodes several times. Anyway, for what it's worth, I think this movie is worth a look.
