Nothing fancy, yet a good film
10 October 2001
Considering that this movie wasn't made to compete with Disney's line-up of Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, etc..., it is an excellent movie. Who would've thought that a simple animation could do so much. This is a good movie to watch with friends and family members of all ages. Also, if you want a good night's innocent laugh, this movie is recommended. This is the first good family film I've seen since "A Bug's Life." Just a little note on the side: can you believe that this movie that absolutely NO romantic plot (one of the first and only that I've seen of Disney animations).

This is NOT Mansfield Park
27 August 2001
Had this movie taken on another title, or be a modern version of the novel, I would've been more forgiving. Let me repeat again: this movie does not reflect Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, neither does the main character portray Fanny Price in the least bit.

For those who have never read Mansfield Park, this book Austen's "virtuest" novel. Generally people don't like Fanny because she is too modest.

Fanny Price is an exceptional character. Her modesty can never be properly portrayed by Hollywood. So I hope that no one will try to make another movie out of this novel. I love Pride and Prejudice as much as I love this novel, but this novel is far different from P&P. P&P can be captured on screen without boring out the audiences but MP cannot. Nevertheless, this does not make the novel any less valuable.

Fanny Price may not be as attractive as Elizabeth Bennet. But if these characters existed in real life, I would trust Fanny over Elizabeth any day. As witty as Elizabeth is, her judgement is faulty (as a result, the 2nd half of the title is called "prejudice"). She cannot discern who Wickham is, and believed in his good appearance. Fanny is just the opposite: her intuition is un-mistakable. Who, except for Fanny, knew that the handsome Henry Crawford was un-trustworthy?

the best and most accurate Jane Austen movie made
26 August 2001
I recommend this movie only to those who have read the book "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. If you have not read the novel, this mini tv-series will still be enjoyable but not as meaningful.

The best part about watching movies that are based on classic novels is watching the characters that you've read about come alive, and comparing them from novel to screen. It gives so much pleasure when the two match each other. It is like having your imagination become real.

This movie is my all-time favourite. I've seen this movie many times now and I still love it. The film plays out the novel in detail and accurately without boring you.

Every main character is acted out in depths so that they become so real. I especially love Darcy and Elizabeth. Lady Catherine De Berg is played wonderfully, altogether proud and not as condescending as she claims to be. And Mr. Colins makes you want to vommit as much as the novel did.

If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you MUST watch this movie. This movie is quite long (6 parts - 5 hours total), but totally worth it.

the story has the scariest opening ever seen
26 August 2001
This movie has an opening that is the scariest that I've ever seen. I was introduced to this movie by a friend's mother. She actually saw this film in the theatre a while back. And I was told by her that everyone in the movie theatre screamed at the opening climax (when the babysitter found out where the calls were coming from).

The sad part about this movie is that it never gets as scary as the beginning again. The suspense increases towards the end but never gains the momentum that it had in the opening scene. This is very sad because this movie could have been a classic in the thriller/suspense genre.

But if you like scary movies, I recommend you to watch this one anyways, because it will scare you out of your wits. Since the suspense is already there in the beginning, you don't have to wait till the end of the movie to be scared. Even if you don't have time to watch the rest of the movie, it is worth just watch the opening scene.

David Copperfield (1999–2000)

Only liked Agnes and Heap
24 May 2001
Before I watched this movie, I did not expect anything extraordinary. After I watched, I felt the same as if I had not watched it. Having read David Copperfield a few years earlier and having seen several other versions of it, I realized the impossibility of adapting this novel. I believe the main reason for this is because the emphasis of this novel is not the plot (though it is absolutely important and necessary), it is the wonderful characters. And since there are so many of them, they cannot possibly be covered in a film without boring the viewer. I have a feeling that the producer of this film was trying to achieve what BBC's Pride and Prejudice (1995) achieved a few years back. As I said before, a number of characters in Dicken's novel compared to Jane Austen is incomparable, therefore we cannot expect the same success using the same production method.

Yet, I have to note something positive. I surely enjoyed the performance of Uriah Heep and Agnes Wickfield. Perhaps the reason is they were almost exactly as I imagined when I read the book a few years back. The slimy, cold, eerie feeling was there every time we see Heep. And we get a sense of peace, beauty, and serenity when we see Agnes (I thought that could be played out more...it was very much emphasized in the book through David's thoughts). Amanda Ryan had the perfect countenance of Agnes Wickfield but she did not have a large enough of a role in the movie as in the novel.

One more thing. David Copperfield's hair looked awful towards the end. The proposal to Agnes was well done, but I couldn't stand looking at David. His hair made him look really ugly. I finished watching the movie in disgust because of that. I don't care how some guys let their hair grow a bit in "those days." I think it might have been more clever to make the main character somewhat more attractive in order to retain a more pleasant feeling in viewers.
