The Invitation (2022)
Enjoyable twist on the classic story
I wasn't sure what the film was going to be but ended up really enjoying it.
The male and female leads are both gorgeous to watch and seem to be having fun in their roles.
It's an entertaining twist on the classic vampire tale and it's great to have allusions to the original: Dracula, with Carfax Abbey, the Harkers etc.
Whitby does NOT look like that though 😄
It's not a "worthy" film, but, to be honest, not every film needs to be? Films should be fun and/or enjoyable. This film, I most definitely enjoyed and would recommend to any horror fans with a penchant for vampire movies.
Definitely worth a look.
My Policeman (2022)
Heartbreaking
Wasn't sure what to expect but the film genuinely moved me. Forbidden love, jealousy, spite, three wasted lives...
Elements of "Atonement" at times, with the three main characters all dealing with their own guilt and shame in their own ways - self destruction, duty and pretence.
Harry Styles was, of course, enigmatic but Linus Roche played the older Tom amazingly. Emma Corrin and Gina McKee excellently portraying Marion.
Rupert Everett really surprises with the understated anguish he invokes.
It is a tragic love story of sorts, drawing focus onto the brutal way gay men were treated in the 50s and 60s, but also the ripple effect of that on the women some men married for appearances.
Do Revenge (2022)
A clever and morally ambiguous movie
Ignoring the obvious "late 20s as teenagers" issue that inhabits all teen comedies, this is a fantastic and surprising movie.
Poking fun at all who have come before, while paying homage (while her name is never mentioned, The Headmaster, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar is obviously a grown Kathryn Merteuil from Cruel Intentions)
Nobody has the moral high ground, and everyone is tarnished to some degree by the fight for social status and the backstabbing games that go along with it.
I wish we had seen more of Sophie Turner's deranged character, and of course, Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Fun!!!!!
The Rehearsal (2022)
Mind blowing
This programme is like nothing I have ever seen before.
It just keeps adding level upon level to the premise and becomes a sort of Inception-like scenario where you no longer know what is real
Genius.
Gold (2022)
Disturbing and dark
Really solid performance from Zac Efron.
Not relying on his looks at all in this film, very gritty, dark and uncomfortable.
A very visceral watch that sometimes requires a strong stomach.
Still unsure what was actually real and what was him going insane?
Something very different from you would expect from Zac Efron, for sure.
The Postcard Killings (2020)
Dark and enjoyable
Wasn't sure what to expect but thought this was a really decent and darkly compelling film.
The one irritant I experienced... I watched on amazon prime and there were no translations when characters were speaking German, Russian or Swedish? I feel I missed out on some big bits of dialogue.
F Is for Family (2015)
Fantastic adult animation show!
Anyone who does not like this animation... I will put you through that effing wall!
Strong "King of the Hill" vibes but completely has its own story and charm.
The amazing Bill Burr really evokes the "old school" parenting style of the 70s.
The Midnight Man (2016)
Baffling
The film isn't terrible, more so the basic premise.
I found myself just constantly asking questions as nothing made sense.
The main question being, why would ANYONE play this "game"? There seems to be no benefit to anyone playing, even if they win?
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Love it!
The negativity I have seen online about this show is just so disheartening. Grown men upset because it isn't a carbon copy of the original show. It is a fantastic update and these people are looking through nostalgia glasses at a show they watched as children... how can anything compare? We have only had 5 episodes so far so just give it a chance! The voice cast is stunning and I hope people can enjoy this for what is is, not what they are feverishly comparing it to!
