The Messenger (I) (2023– )
8/10
A touching story superbly acted
12 June 2023
There are moments in The Messenger that are some of the most beautiful and heartfelt I have seen on television. I am talking about the young actors who play the four friends, each undergoing unresolved crises in their lives. The interplay between them is wonderful to watch, wrenching at times. None more so than William McKenna who plays the titular role and nails his character with a gifted array of non-verbal communication, a glance here, an anguished look there. He is never less than compelling to watch and surely great things lie ahead of him.

The series is a nice change from the usual fare and it is good to see quality Australian drama. Production values are top notch and cinematographer Geoff Hall evokes a period feel even though the story is rooted in the present.

The episodes unfold slowly and there is a dip in momentum about half-way through, but stay with it as the final episodes resolve into a satisfyingly warm conclusion that will stay with you for a long time.

Boring and unbelievable characters
8 May 2023
I couldn't stifle my yawns after two episodes. How do you manage to make an international incident seem so boring? Where is the tension and excitement? Indeed, what is even happening? Part, if not the whole of the problem, are the characters we have to watch deal with this "crisis". What a bunch of unengaging misfits! Badly cast and badly acted by some. Too many scenes left me thinking this is what lazy writing and direction looks like - not apparent in an engaging show. Production values seem high, the Land Rovers look good, a pity they didn't have time to do many Take Two or Threes. OK, you get my drift. I didn't like this one.

Australian Survivor: Return of the King (2023)
Season 8, Episode 7

Master at his best
15 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Possibly the best tribal council in a long time, if not all time. It is fascinating to watch the master strategist at work, adapting his moves on the fly, boxing his victim into a corner and forcing him to make a choice, either of which has terrible consequences. Watching the victim squirm is cringeworthy but great television. It is tempting to laugh at how naive some tribe members appear to be in playing the game. This is perhaps unfair as we, the viewers, are privy to information that they do not have. However, overconfidence has seen many a downfall.

This master class shows the self-proclaimed King at his best. His superior tactics more than compensate for his perceived weakness by other players. This is how you play Survivor and make it to the end of the season.

Time has not been forgiving
18 February 2021
Oh dear. This has dated badly. I recall seeing this when it first aired and enjoying it. The recent passing of Le Carre prompted me to revisit its pleasures. I got to Ep. 3 and gave up. How styles have changed. The acting is stilted, the characters unbelievable, sound poor, production of low standard (or low budget). Of course, many shows of that era have also dated - as have I. However, that is no excuse. It should have been better.

Walking Dead - on and on
3 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched every episode and always look forward to the next one. The writers are doing something right in that regard. Looking back over three seasons there have been highs and lows. The initial fear of zombie attack, and the suspense this generated, has lessened as the characters have become expert in their dispatch. Perhaps this is to be expected - there are only so many times you can watch a brutal killing before becoming desensitised. As have the characters themselves.

Most interesting to me is how the characters have hardened, emotionally and physically. Young Carl personifies this. His coolness is scary. Or is he disturbed? Aren't they all? Why wouldn't they be? The world has changed.

There are long stretches when the narrative stalls and you are left wishing for quicker resolutions. But along come some moments that are utterly heartbreaking. There is a small scene in S3 where a hitchhiker runs after Rick and Carl but they repeatedly ignore his cries for help. Later, on the way back to the prison, they discover him dead on the side of the road but they take his backpack anyway. It's a cold, cold world, this land of the walking dead.

Destined for top 10
20 July 2007
It has been a year since I first saw Brokeback. I have not had the emotional courage to embrace it again before now. I knew straight away it was a masterpiece but was so devastated (how many movies do that to you?) that as good as it is I would allow some space, my head to clear, before a second viewing. And.. you guessed it.. I am as affected now as I was back then. The many postings before me have said all there is to say. I thought this time, knowing the narrative, I could distance myself from the drama and appreciate the great acting, screenplay, editing, indeed nearly everything about this production. But I can't stand back. It won't let me. And for me that is its greatest achievement. I want to visit you again Brokeback and I will, every now and then, but boy, you are a hard mountain to climb off!
