The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
When you hired him to fix the mailbox all those years ago...
Clever. They've done a surprisingly great job of creating a real mystery at the same time as mocking the genre beautifully. It was an absolute pleasure to watch. It has its quirks and it's misses but all in all, a great watch. Just be prepared for what it is.
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021)
Could have been more
It's still a clever premise but this one was a bit odd. It seemed like it lost its way half way through so they went "oh let's do this!" And did something silly. I won't mention it because it's a major spoiler but doing what they did diminishes what happened in the first movie. If they had of stuck to the format they would have still had a great movie. The "clever twist" that's not clever or twisty just cheapened it. I'm being very negative and I gave it a 7.... Look the movies good. I just think the "oh my god! But she...." twist they used was really lame and could have been way better. The rest of the movie was cool.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Umm what?
I love boba. Like an unhealthy amount. And I loved the Mandalorian.
All that love doesn't make up for this. It felt like an 80's style action movie. Badly disjointed fight scenes. Early in the season there's a "high speed chase" with some hover bikes and a hover car and it was AWFUL. Honestly what you'd expect from SpaceBalls not StarWars. Oh no we're driving at 5 miles an hour but let's put on dramatic music to make it better. No. Just no. What were ya'll thinking? I'm so sad and how bad this is. I was really excited and it's just awful.
Wolf Like Me (2022)
I miss the goat.
What a great series. Well cast. Great script. Took a bit to get going for me but I fricken loved it and there better be a season two or I'll tantrum like a 2 year old out the front of the Stan offices until they cave in. Do yourself a favour. Have a wine and watch this Aussie gem.
Eternals (2021)
Watching your house burn down is more enjoyable.
This was such a mess. Few questions: why does someone speak American Sign Language 7000 years before America? If humans hadn't evolved yet, why do they look like us? Surely they'd be modelled on Celestials? Why is every character suddenly super powerful when the plot requires? But will fall down and not be able to get up from a single punch at any other time in the movie...? I could go on and on. Great cast. Special effects were less than the usual Marvel standard. Messy script. Disjointed direction. I agree with a lot of the comments saying this could have made a good series on Disney+
The Tourist (2022)
Awful
Not sure how this rates so well. It was terrible. Right from the ridiculous car chase at the beginning where the writer forgot about physics and the 18 wheeler has the same turning radius as a sedan and can accelerate just as quickly. The acting was also sub par. I don't blame the actors for that as the leads are all very capable actors. The only reason they'd be delivering their lines so terribly would be because of the Director. (Also the dialogue was terrible in parts) The country theme felt like it was written by someone that had never been outside a city. Sorry but as a proud country folk - we don't sit in our cars holding our hands on the horn when the road is blocked. We don't ignore people when we are asked for directions to the waterfall. We don't.... I can't list everything. I really feel like I'm dumber from having watched it. Danielle MacDonald is good as always but she has NOTHING to work with and poor direction so it all just doesn't work. Honestly if you're considering watching this maybe just slam your hand in the car door or go stand in a covid testing line for 8 hours. Both options are far more enjoyable than watching this.
Finch (2021)
Let down
Pretty disappointed. Tom Hanks is wonderful as always. The CGI is beautiful. But the story just wasn't engaging. If the stories of what happened were told earlier, I might have cared more. I also don't get the robot. If he can build all the robots he built to cut up books, surely he could have made a hydroponic plant system? There were just too many plot holes for me.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (2021)
Stick it out
I watched the first episode and went "meh". There were some new twists but nothing exciting. I didn't care about the characters enough by the end of episode one to be shocked by the big reveal. But I have OCD and can't leave just one episode watched so eventually watched the rest. And it does get better. I believe the father wasn't cast well (good actor just not convincing as the father). It feels like it's trying to build tension but it's trying to in the same way you would in a movie. Which doesn't work when you have to wait a week for the next episode. I like it, the concept is good. But it feels rushed. TV horror works because you have the time to make people care about the characters. But that isn't happening. I am enjoying it more as it goes on but this could have been so much more.
Black Widow (2021)
Hugely disappointing
Great actors, great director. But it just seemed like they didn't work. One thing I love about black widow in other films has been the wide camera fight scenes where you can see Scarlett has trained hard and learnt the moves, and they look epic. It appears the director forgot Scarlett is insanely talented and went for the cheap cut scenes in every single fight sequence. Honestly it just really felt the whole way through that the director knew nothing about modern action movies and was trying to make Gone With The Black Widow and Prejudice... Black Widow deserved more.
