The Black Phone (2021)
16-18 Million dollar budget. You don't need 400 million to make a good movie. Good Acting. Good writing. Good Directing. For the win
Isn't funny how every once and awhile a movie comes along that isn't over hyped, moves under the radar to a degree, and gets the job done. While Hollywood is out spewing 400 million dollar movies. It's so refreshing to see something like this. That doesn't try and be more than it needs to be, it doesn't try to overly scare you with stupid jump scares every five seconds. It builds tension and if has humor, and a hero without a cape or a costume. Ethan Hawke was good, but the kid actors really steal it.
Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon (2021)
Someone should call 911, because comedy was just murdered.
I don't get how they thought this storyline was going to play for over an hour. No one cares enough about Qanon to watch a whole movie mocking what they believe people on the right to be. This is like cheap liberal comics trying to get Clapter by playing to their audience vs actually trying to be funny. We get enough of this with SNL and Borat 2.
The first movie was at least unique, and I argue the scene with the Alligator in the pool is one of the more funny laugh out loud scenes ever.
You could have made this funny, but it was a cheap attempt.
I'm shocked Patton Oswalt agreed to do this, he can at least make political mockery comical at times.
Putting a Make America great again hat on an actor is not comedy, and even in the realm of comedy and humor it seemed cheap and lacked effort.
We get it, you put on an American Flag t-shirt and suddenly everyone on the right is accepting of you. Who thought this would work for an hour.
La Brea (2021)
Never get invested in an NBC Sci-Fi Show
I gave it six stars for an attempt at originality. It feels super rushed and poorly edited. I want to like it, but it's all over the place. The acting by some is awful. The CGI is dreadful. It won't be renewed.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
Some high, highs, but too many low, lows. Cant tell if I loved it, or hated it.
Waited all this time for this, sat down with friends ready to cringe and laugh, and either we all just got old between films, or we loved it, and just couldn't laugh through our masks. A couple of strong laughs, but I'm reading reviews saying 9/10 and wondering what these people watched. No Luenell Either? I'm seeing that the bad reviews are woke and saying "Republicans or rednecks won't like it" of course people have to get political and not just watch it, and what would republicans be mad about, Giuliani scene was cringey more than funny, and if you didn't want to hang out with the cabin boys after, you clearly are enjoying 2020 being locked in. From my group what I could tell is, if you liked the daughter character you liked it a lot, if you didn't, obviously you won't. I probably should give it a 4, or a 7, but I guess to me it was like watching the sixth sense a second time. That's probably a dumb analogy, but I couldn't get past the novelty had worn off. I think I laughed more the 5 minutes before we watched it, talking about Borat 1, then during.
Bert Kreischer: Secret Time (2018)
Burnt Chrysler is the fattest comedian in the world. In between bites, he spews out some comedy gold
This is his best show by far. If you know him from his previous stuff, the machine, etc, you can see how far he has come. He really finds himself in this, whatever the hell that means. He feels like a top comic to me now. I mean as fat as he is, it's amazing that he even gets out of the house, and the effort alone is worth the watch, but Bert pulls you in on this special, with the gravitational pull from his huge body, and his storytelling. He also managed like very few people these days to not include any hacky political humor about either party. In fact there was no politics to be found. It was nice to see an old school comedy special. You get to see the Bert you enjoy on his podcast, and other podcasts like Your moms house and Joe Rogans. Congrats sir. Go Noles.
