Safe (2018)
Good, found the ending odd
I watched both this and the stranger and the stranger has really negative reviews about the ending being unbelievable. I actually felt safe was less believable, but still good.
The ending isn't bad, or full of plot holes per say, although it is hard to believe a middle-aged woman would kill a teenage boy. If the secret about the fire did mean so much to her (which it did) there perhaps needed to be just a tad more dialogue and emphasis on this- to make her actions seem less of a massive overreaction. One conversation where she expresses how she'd be unable to live with herself if this all comes out would have helped support the ending.
I also don't understand why Jenny was hiding from her father?
Otherwise, it is really good. The acting is fab, its really gripping, the characters are good and you'd be watching until the end. I like the way answers are relevaled throughout, with still a big revolution at the end. You don't find out about the key event that ties everything together until one of the last episodes, but you can still draw some conclusions about subplots.
The Stranger (2020)
Very thick plot, ending good
I thought the stranger was really good, a very thick plot if you like lots of twists and turns, and they are all explained, albeit briefly.
I feel like the ending or "revaling" epsiodes could have lasted a little longer. Many say the ending was bad or has loop holes- I don't think it does, it makes perfect sense if you add it all together, but it is explained very quickly which is why it could feel like it doesnt add up to some. I didn't experience this, but others clearly did. For example, Tripp says only once and briefly "I didn't mean to" when he confesses to killing Corine- but that is it. More elaboration on it being an "accident" and he just got angry/whatever would make it much more believable rather than painting him as like he murdered someone over money from a village football club, which as others have pointed out, seems a little far-fetched.
More elaboration on why both the Stranger and Katz acted the way they did would be better. The stranger was painted out by the end to be a little bit too normal- what she did was seriously messed up, she needed to be a little bit more weird or ominous.
I actually thought the monther poisoning Olivia to make her ill was a really good storyline with a fab twist and more ellaboration on that would have been good. Talking of Olivia, she was left with a mother who poisons her and a father in custody- this isn't really a plot hole per say, but if the "5 months later" thing at the end wasn't as brief it would have been interesting to see where she is at.
The idea of Martin holding a corpse in the house and that's why he didn't want it knocked down was actually a fantastic plot twist which did all add up and the acting from him was phenomenal. I would have loved an ending like the scene when the body bag just falls from the walls as they try destroy the house and it was Corine because that scene was just so shocking.
Overall would heavily recommend, but if youre confused at the ending do google a "the stranger ending explaned" article to go over it first because it does all link up and there aren't any plot holes, but it just takes going over as nothing is reiterated, you have to udnerstand it or sometimes even infer.
