Poor Things (2023)
I'm happy I watched it, but I won't watch it again
TL;DR - Overall a very beautiful movie with an amazing cast, but struggles with viewer retention and character connection.
First and foremost, the movie is beautiful. The directing, set design, incredible sound design and overall acting are all amazing and truly showcase the world through child-like eyes really amazingly. Sadly, I felt that this was weighed down heavily by some of the writing and length of the film.
Maybe I missed the point of this movie or it was just not meant for me, but I found myself struggling to care or be invested at all. I normally appreciate movies with multiple meanings, each unique to the individual, but this movie felt like grasping at straws. There was commentary on abuse, sexual liberation, fetishization of child-like appearance, and overall positive female empowerment messages. However, it all felt very surface-level, and once my mind was set on one, the rest of the movie tended to feel dull.
In regard to the controversy around this film, there is a lot of sex. More often than not, I felt the sex was played purely for comedic effect which saddened me. It was hard to view Bella as a full grown woman, even at the end of the film. This caused the laughs to be overshadowed by a kind of disgust that is left entirely for the viewer to decide how to feel. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and I felt was reflected in the purpose of the film; however, it did feel gratuitous at times.
Pearl (2022)
An absolutely amazing movie, but not X 2.
People expecting a slasher gore fest like X will be severely disappointed in this movie. This movie is more of a psychological horror where we see the descent of an extremely lonely girl. Taken for what it is, it's a fantastic movie! It's scary, tense, and I genuinely did start feeling attached to the characters. Overall, the production was amazing too. Great cinematography, music, and especially acting. I'd recommend this movie for anyone to watch, as it might be one of my new favorites to come out of the past couple years.
I don't understand all the negativity surrounding these reviews, but my best guess is it's people wanting another full slasher. It's not, but it is an incredible movie.
American Pop (1981)
Truly one of Bakshi's Best
This is a seriously great movie. I highly recommend it, especially if you really enjoy music. My only problem is that the pacing is a little confusing in the beginning, and you can easily miss things if you're not giving the movie all your attention. If you're in the mood to watch an emotional, all around great movie, consider giving this one a watch.
Wizards (1977)
The God of The Bakshi Holy Trinity
The three best Bakshi films are Wizards, American Pop, and Hey Good Lookin', at least in my eyes. Wizards was the first of these films I saw, and I instantly fell in love. The concept is super creative, and a nice fresh spin on the classic fantasy recipe. Not to mention the shock factor it gives off from its PG rating. Let's just say this was made when PG actually meant Parental Guidance. That being said, it is considerably more kid-friendly than other Bakshi works, and I'd recommend it to the 12 year age range. If you're a fan of animation or fantasy, you should definitely give this cult classic a watch.
Rock & Rule (1983)
The Goofy Movie but with a demon
It's a solid movie with fun animation and a killer soundtrack. Although it's not my favorite cult movie of all time, still definitely worth a watch. I mean c'mon, it's the Powerline concert but with a demon.
