Final Cut! Mesmerizing
10 July 2022
Vangelis is the real star of this movie. The soundtrack is minimal, but mesmerizing. The sense of atmosphere is unbelievable. The FinalCut is the only version of Blade Runner that I've seen, and it's brilliant.

Laughs! (Get context)
21 June 2022
There aren't many movies that I've laughed this hard at, all throughout. Here's what I recommend for the best experience: watch Horror of Dracula (1958) first, then this. There are so many tiny references and nuances to the parody that you won't catch otherwise. Christopher Lee is, of course, phenomenal, but I was almost equally entertained when he was off screen. And let me reassure you: at the point when it looks like he's left the story, he hasn't. And the ending is beyond beautiful.

Fascinating

Warning: Spoilers
I like this film and I know why I like this film. I'm using this review to leave a note so I can skip the sex scenes, which are gratuitous and leave a sour taste on an otherwise fantastic sci-fi movie. Note to self: I'm not filtering all nudity, just sex, so it's still 18+. This just makes it not porn.

Skip from, to: 18:00, 20:30.

29:20, 31:02.

57:20. 59:30.

1:27:20, 1:29:20.

1:43:30, 1:44:24.

1:57:55, 1:59:50.

An improvement on the original!
23 March 2022
I love the original Jim Henson movie, don't get me wrong. But if, like me, you watch those old films and think, "What if they used modern camera and technique with a better budget," then you will love this show. All the charm of physical sets and puppeteering plus the more interesting style we've come to expect from modern cinematography.

uniquely painful experience
11 March 2022
Well-designed, crafted, shot, and acted. I could continue on the good points but they're fairly evident.

That said, this film was extremely difficult to watch. That wasn't because of the gore, or disturbing images, or language (though the nudity was unnecessary). Mostly it's because, of all the psychopaths and moral degenerates in cinema, false prophets and misleading teachers who prey on simple people are genuinely the most revolting.

Full disclosure: I'm a Christian. I know these types of people do exist and have been around since the beginning. Just ask Jude. Obviously this movie highly dramatizes these people, but seeing them operate is just sickening. It's watching the thing you hold most sacred be butchered and used to manipulate people so much like the people you love, whether it be for narcissistic, misguided convictions or cynical personal gain.

If you don't share my faith, this film is a picture of the truly revolting things people can do to each other. If you do, it's all that and they do it in your Father's name. I'd say the movie is worth watching. After all, some "teachers" come only to kill and destroy. We've known that for millennia. Though most of the characters are revolting (props to the actors, by the way, they sell it well), it's a fascinating film, though the first thirty minutes are a bit slow. Just don't mistake this for entertainment, because it is certainly not that.

7/10 on my scale: imperfect, would watch again with a friend.

Reference-heavy, hilarious, actually good
18 February 2022
I love it. It's hilarious and entertaining. But I will say this. If you haven't read the book or seen the old P&P series or the movie, you're going to think the dialogue is weird and the character stuff comes out of nowhere. I still think you could enjoy it though. However, if you're familiar with the source material, then this is absolutely hilarious. The way the characters solemnly speak the classic, recognizable lines from the book and in equal solemnity tack on a bit about the zombie apocalypse or Chinese martial arts is just hilarious. It's a parody in the bast way, which is to say, it's not even a parody so much as a direct transposition of the drama and characters of the original story into a ridiculous situation. Bravo.

Slow build, great ending
16 February 2022
This is not the kind of film where twists and turns happen every minute. It's more of a slow build in tension (following a great opening scene) but I never felt bored during the runtime. The protagonist, the villain, and the victims are all compelling and at the end I didn't even know who to root for but I was just sitting there fascinated. One thing that sets this movie apart for me, especially, is that it doesn't rely on frequent or graphic violence to be disturbing. Horrific violence occurs, but it's largely implied rather than shown, which I think is in good taste for this sort of film. Definitely worth a watch for, I would say, ages 15+.

Bit of fun fluff
13 February 2022
This is the kind of movie you watch alone on a Saturday night when you've got nothing else to do, and you think, well that was enjoyable, but I never would have watched it if I wasn't alone on a Saturday night with nothing to do. It's too long, and a bit bland, but charming enough to be fun for a single viewing on a Saturday night when you're alone with nothing to do.

Hawkeye: Hide and Seek (2021)
Season 1, Episode 2
The plot thickens!
28 November 2021
The place really picks up in this episode. It balances the action and the town time well, and the down time is certainly not empty. The writing is good, the characters are consistent, and the suspense is on. Not to mention, the chemistry between Kate and Hawkeye is fantastic. She's like an older version of Hawkeye's actual daughter and he quickly falls into treating her as such. The LARP scene was a bit cringe, but in a self aware way. Overall, I love the robe and lace this episode maintains. Can't wait for the next.

Hawkeye: Never Meet Your Heroes (2021)
Season 1, Episode 1
Pleasantly surprised
28 November 2021
I expected Kate Bishop to be an annoying know it all and a bad example of how to write a strong female character. She's not. Granted, she's arrogant, but in a way the series is conscious of and which has consequences. I can see her becoming the Ashoka Tano of the MCU: there's much room for growth but she will grow.

This episode is a bit slow, but that's to be expected when you have to introduce new characters. Everyone in the cast is fantastic. And whoever came up with the color scheme for the stores deserves a medal. I don't think I've ever seen as film with such good purple tones before. Definitely going to keep watching.

Exceeds Expectations
14 November 2021
I enjoyed this movie way more than I thought I would. It's definitely superior to anything else that's come out since Endgame. If you think, like I thought, that the movie would be overcrowded, it's really not. Every character brings a unique perspective, their relationships are genuine, and you sympathize with both those in the right and those in the wrong. There are some surprises, but the kind where you look back and think, ok, that makes sense. Plus the acting, cinematography, and storytelling overall are amazing.

Great adaption
27 October 2021
I read the book. This is one of those rare book adaptations wherein the director doesn't think he's smarter than the author. There's no altering of characters and adding of storylines to make the material "more interesting". One gender-swap, but it's inconsequential and the actress is phenomenal.

The film's plot lines are bit condensed from the original material, but that's necessary given the weight of the novel.

Paul was a character I never had a definitive image of when I first read the book, but Chalamet fits what I remember well. But let me say this: Paul's mother and Isaacs as Duke Leto are exactly as I pictured them. Isaacs especially. He's identical to the personality I had imagined.

Visually, this film is a masterpiece. But the soundtrack stole the show. That epic oral history quality that the book has that's hard to communicate via words to the screen is perfectly captured by the score. Awesome. In the traditional sense of the word. Awesome.

All the best parts of venom!
4 October 2021
If you love the corny, surreal humor and massively entertaining performances of the first Venom movie but hated how straight and "humanity is a weakness I am a genius" the villain was, this is the show for you. Everyone's on the same level here. Eddie and V are ridiculous and Kasasy and Shriek are no less so. Michelle Williams is amazing and everything just works. 100% recommend.

Entertaining modern tall tale
24 September 2021
Here's how you have to look at the accuracy of this story: it's as if someone read a book about the real thing, then had a dream about it, then wrote out the dream. If you get hung up on historical detail and have an emotional attachment to the people involved, this movie's not for you. If you're just after an entertaining flick in an easily recognizable setting, this is great. And Christian Bale, as usual, is so good I kept forgetting he was Christian Bale.

Star Wars: Visions (2021– )
Hit and miss
22 September 2021
The biggest problem here is that it's not clear who the audience is. I get the sense kids would love this stuff, but some of the dialog is just painful. Beautiful visually, though. About every other one is worth watching. Some good voice work, too, though not all.

Great execution of unsurprising themes
3 August 2021
It's true that this movie basically combines 1984 and F451 and the Matrix for its plot. However, it's done very well. The action scenes and Christian Bale's commitment to his stern face during them are both fantastic. The choreography is elaborate and everything moves at lightning speed. A couple of the plot twists are actually very hard to see coming. The camera artist is very early 2000's but it's some of the best I've seen of that era. Love this movie.

Fantastic episode. Plot is still fascinating and Mobius really shone . Hunter B19's performance wasn't great but Sylvie was much improved. Tom, as always, fantastic.

Get over Netflix, people!
24 June 2021
I'm not posting a full review till the series is over. So far, so good. One thing, though: I'm sick and tired of people whining about "slow pacing" when there's nothing of the sort and everybody's just addicted to the instant gratification of the Netflix model. TV worked like this for decades. If these people could watch it all in one weekend they wouldn't say a thing.

What a cliffhanger
24 June 2021
Overall, a good episode. Sylvie didn't quite have Mobius' charisma, but she was well-written. The pacing was similar to that of the previous episodes: action and discovery used to drive and connect interesting conversations between main characters. Visuals, as usual, spectacular. Can't wait to see what comes next!
