Scandal (2012)
Watchable, but predictable.
I'd like to rate this show higher, but it's exactly the same as Grey's Anatomy. The obligatory homosexuals, the characters, the writing, direction, the shouting and psychotic rants in almost every scene, are all exactly the same. I prefer something more original and unpredictable, but I did enjoy the show as something to watch when I couldn't find anything else. That being said, it's not something I'd watch a second time.
The acting is over the top dramatic, everyone has hideous character flaws and secrets, which, while making decent watching, does become tedious over time.
Suspend your disbelief and you may enjoy it.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Netflix ruined a great show
I was gripped through the first two seasons and was eagerly awaiting the third. What a disappointment. In typical Netflix fashion, here comes the cursing, sex scenes and over the top PC.
If the show had begun in an adult fashion, then I could have turned away from it without too much disappointment, as I do with all Netflix originals. But it didn't, it was clean and family friendly, so why on earth did they do this to it?
Even the president's young daughter swears, and he just laughs at her. Not what my parents would have done!
I barely made it through 10 minutes of the first episode before turning it off and searching Google for what on earth had gone wrong!
Netflix ruins decent shows whenever they get their hands on them, and this was the last straw. If someone can't make an argument or a point without cursing, then they need to go back to school for more words!
Goodbye, Netflix!
Stargate Origins (2018)
I so wanted to like this!
So, Stargate Universe left us hanging with a massive cliffhanger. Then, instead of perhaps making a movie to finish off that series, they decided to throw it at this pile of garbage. I've been watching Stargate for around 25 years now, since the beginning. I love all of it and have watched every episode of every series multiple times, along with the 2 amazing SG1 movies. I was really exited to come across this, another Stargate movie, and hurried to purchase it! What a waste of money!
This movie is so far away from the Stargate quality of dialogue, acting and storyline that I hope the makers are thoroughly embarrassed to have it attached to their names! I have given it a 2-star rating as the music is good and, after all, it does have a stargate in the movie, but that's about as generous as I can get, I'm afraid.
What happens at the end of the movie, i.e. The 'instructions' given to Katherine by the Goa'uld, is nothing short of ludicrous and just made a bad movie even worse.
If you are a fan of the Stargate franchise, please don't waste your time and money, as I did, on this low-budget rubbish.
Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Very watchable, but too long storylines at times
I really enjoy watching this show. The medical parts are fascinating, and most of the storylines are just fine. However, some of the plots just go on and on, episode after episode, when you just want them to move on. The ridiculous Denny plot, just for one. The 'ghost' storyline was ridiculous and stupid, and went on for sooo many episodes! I found myself skipping forward a lot just to get back to the normal parts of the show.
Izzie is annoying, dramatic and selfish, but the other characters are better and more watchable.
It is a good show, on the whole, and worth watching if you are undecided.
The Underground Railroad (2021)
Not as gripping as it tries to be
First of all, I was a bit shocked to see this rated PG. It should have been at the very least a 12. The first episode, especially, is very gritty with some disturbing scenes. Perhaps not at graphic as some shows today, but still not for children, IMHO.
Secondly, after the gripping first 2 episodes, this becomes very, very slow, with scenes stretched out for far, too long.
I didn't mind the flashbacks, but it would have been so much better if the pace had been faster, rather than showing everything in excruciating detail.
Thirdly, I know it wasn't supposed to be historically accurate, but having actual trains running underground with no-one up above ever hearing or finding them was too far-fetched, never mind how long it would have taken to dig the tunnels and steal a train to run down there!
Also, not all whites were abusers, even in the deep South. Many hated slavery and helped a lot of slaves to escape to the North, but in this portrayal almost all whites are bad and use the 'N' word far, too often.
The program did, however, show how slaves were treated as less than nothing. Property to be used and disposed of on a whim. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how bad it was.
All-in-all it was watchable, but slow-paced, far-fetched and graphic in parts.
Marple: Sleeping Murder (2006)
Too many changes
Drivel...so completely different to the book and the Joan Hickson version that I barely recognised it and couldn't make it all of the way through. 'The Funnybones', really??? Where did that idea come from? Read the book, watch the other movie, keep away from this.
The makers if this series seemed to me to be more interested in getting big names for the roles, rather than considering whether or not they were right for the characters.
Poirot (1989)
Brilliant acting, destroyed storylines
I've been reading Agatha Christie for as long as I can remember. Poirot started so well, but the later episodes became just a parody of the books. They changed storylines, added and/or removed characters, even changing the actual murderers in some cases. The final episode was the worst of them all. Without giving anything away, the person who wrote the screenplay does not understand the Poirot character at all. I can't say more than that without spoiling it, but read the book, don't watch that episode.
Also in the later episodes, Poirot's character becomes much darker, and in one episode he looks almost suicidal!
It's a shame, because every actor involved played their parts to perfection, I just didn't like the way they strayed from the books, and the grim turn the episodes took towards the end.
Upstairs, Downstairs (1971)
Great from start to finish
I started watching this during the COVID-19 pandemic, really only for something to watch. I'm pleased I found it, it filled my afternoons very nicely! It's an enthralling tale of the aristocracy and their staff of servants and the relationships between them all. It's sometimes quite shocking for it's time, so don't expect a particularly wholesome show! If your're looking for something to watch, you could do a lot worse. Oh, and though the show spanned about 30 years, no-one ever got any older! :D
The Terminal (2004)
Not as good as the hype
Oh dear, I know this will be an unpopular review as most people seem to love this movie, but I found it boring and a bit forced. I like Tom Hanks, and he does carry the movie, but I feel he could have chosen better.
It tries too hard to be amusing, and the fact that he could learn a new language in such a short time was very unbelievable.
I didn't hate it, I just didn't like it very much. People I know raved about it, but I just don't agree with all of the hype, and it was a bit, too sickly-sweet in places.
Jungle (2017)
Slow start, but worth it!
My sister talked me into watching this. It's not my usual kind of movie, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.
It starts off very slowly, but all of a sudden everything begins to happen! The fact that it's a true story made it all the more harrowing and worth the watch.
Very gripping, and makes you wonder about the lengths people will go to when their survival depends on it. Excellent direction and acting, I don't really understand the bad reviews, I'd certainly recommend it!
I Am Mother (2019)
Slow, but compelling
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I found this. I am a fan of sci-fi which is why I thought I'd give it a try.
The movie doesn't really move at a fast pace, but it has a compelling storyline which makes you wonder where it's leading. I can't really say much more without spoling the plot, but if you are lost for a movie to fill a lonely night, try this.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999)
Controversial content handled well
This show could have easily been offensive and insensitive, but the stories are handled very well. I would say that it appears to be quite realistic; some of the victims are bad in themselves, or just plain idiots. Sometimes the outcomes of the cases are not what you would expect, but that's true in real-life, too. Sometimes the bad guys win, sometimes you are never quite sure if the defendant is actually guilty or not. Sometimes even the police and the judges are the bad guys!
The show could be tough and upsetting viewing for particularly sensitive people, so I would use discretion before watching. However, although it appears to highlight flaws within the justice system, it shows what an uphill, unbeatable slog they go through to try and bring that justice to deserving victims. Whatever your opinion, the show is certainly gripping and one of my favourites.
Suits (2011)
Great show, bad language
As much as I love the story lines and the characters, the constant use of escalating bad language completely spoils it. It didn't start out that way, and gets worse with each season. No-one swears like that in real life, at least no-one I know, and a lot of it is out of context and unrealistic. ALL of the characters use bad language, which is unrealistic in itself, as a lot of people don't use it, particularly in the workplace and never to clients! Drop the language, it doesn't need it, it's a great show without it!
Prison Break (2005)
Cheesy, but gripping!
If you can ignore the overacting by some of the cast of the show, and the somewhat cheesy stereotypical characters, you should thoroughly enjoy this program. It has tension, a great cast and an excellent storyline, if somewhat unbelievable - but hey, it's entertainment, so who needs to believe it!
When I watch a TV show or movie, the thing that always interests me is the way the various characters develop. In this show there is plenty of character development, and not everyone is what they appear to be on the surface.
In one episode you gain an insight into the backgrounds of some of the characters, which is very interesting. It also explains why the main character takes such monumental risks for his brother in the first place.
There are a few unpredictable moments, which serves to keep you interested in where it's all going, and each episode seems to end on a cliffhanger leading you to binge-watch until the early hours, if you are anything like us! All-in-all, it's a great show, and I'm currently watching it through for the third time and am still enjoying it!
Judge Judy (1996)
Bullying, name-calling, talking over people...
I used to watch Judge Judy years ago and always thought she was hard but fair. Today I turned on the TV and she was on, so settled down to watch. To say I'm shocked is an understatement! She came across as an abusive, belligerent bully! She wouldn't let anyone explain anything or get a word in edgewise. She thought the plaintiffs were upset over nothing and called them 'sickos', even though she ruled in their favour. She said the plaintiff was a sicko, the husband was a sicko and he was married to a sicko! It was disgusting beyond belief! Does she know the definition of 'sick'? I will never, ever watch this show again, and I hope it's taken off the air soon, as years of telling people what to do seems to have gone to her head.
The Last Man on Earth (2015)
Hilarious, and interesting character development
I must admit I did binge-watch the first two seasons. The story lines are not earth-shattering, but still have you gripped, and the dialogue between the characters is sometimes very amusing.
I do, however, find it very difficult to develop any kind of sympathy for the main character, Phil. He's not a particularly bad person, but he's such a tool, and everything that happens to him he brings on himself.
He's definitely not easy to like, but I'm hoping that will change for me as the show progresses, as it did with Carol, his wife. She changes from the most annoying person on earth to the glue that holds the group together.
It's a nice change to watch an apocalyptic show that doesn't have people trying to kill each other for what's left...it's actually more realistic to imagine that people would form communities and pull together if that ever did happen. :) If you are toying with the idea of watching it, then do so. It is funny, and quite insightful in places, and if you can suspend your disbelief at all of the highly unlikely coincidences, then you'll enjoy it all the more.
Dexter (2006)
Scary, funny, gripping
Dexter is a serial killer with whom we can identify. He doesn't want to be this way, he just is. As a child, instead of giving Dexter the intense therapy he obviously needs, his father teaches his son how to blend in and suggests a way for him to channel his urges.
It's almost painful to watch Dexter try to live a normal life with a job and girlfriend, using behaviours he has learned from his father in order to do so.
But he's not normal, though he does invoke sympathy, and he's a self-confessed monster, doing things most people wouldn't be able to live with. If his character popped up in Criminal Minds we'd be rooting for the FBI, but this show gives us the other side of the coin.
It's disturbing, yes, but gripping and addictive viewing. Enjoy!
Desperate Housewives (2004)
Very Watchable
If you can ignore all the forced purple and the fact that it's the most clichéd and predictable program ever, then suspend your disbelief and enjoy a roller-coaster ride of watchable TV.
Being a fan of sci-fi and thrillers, I wouldn't have touched this if my sister hadn't given me a push, so if you think you wouldn't enjoy it, try it anyway, at least for a season.
It has comedy, romance, drama, mystery, suspense and much more, and even though I wouldn't have thought it was my kind of program, I was hooked from start to finish, and can see myself watching it all over again in the not too distant future.
Bates Motel (2013)
Very good viewing...but...
This is a gripping program, but I was very disappointed that the makers didn't set it in the correct time. It would have been more atmospheric and more in keeping with the genre if they hadn't 'moderned' it up...in fact, I would have made it entirely in black and white.
However, that aside, the storyline so far is suspenseful and sometimes unpredictable. If you haven't seen it as yet, but appreciate dark viewing then you will probably enjoy this.
You can understand why Norman grows up to do what he does as his mother is domineering and possessive and weaves her influence on her favourite son in a macabre and not always subtle way. She clearly does love him, but it's not what I would call healthy!
The acting is good, and the set is very much the same as the original movie, particularly the house, which I think is amazing! But how much better would it have been if victims didn't have access to modern technology when they find themselves trapped in the motel, as I'm sure some will as the program progresses. :-)
