The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
It's okay
This is one of those movies that would do better as a series. It's trying to be too much than can be fit in the runtime of a single movie.
A lot of the characters themes and plot lines were left with potential, but this potential was never reached. Not disappointed, but not in love with it either.
Free Guy (2021)
They really worked hard on this.
The reason I didn't give this the last 2 stars is because some lines come off as unnecessary (for me at least) like when everyone says "it's a lightsabre". It felt very unnatural. There are more lines and moments like this.
HOWEVER. That is all the negative criticism I have to give.
It's an action/romcom/existential dilemma movie is all I can call it. What I love are the references and the fa t that they got actual gaming youtubers like Poki Jack Septiceye + a few others to be a part of the movie.
If you're a Gamer, or if you love gaming, plus want a feel-good love story + comedy movie there's a good chance you'll eat this one up.
Also, Chris Evans cameo = best cameo.
86 (2021)
Oh. My. God.
I hate this show for one reason: That cliffhanger.
Man, I wanna know what happens. That ending was so well-written. I'm not giving it a 10 because it did have a few minor shortcomings (not noticeable to a casual viewer, don't worry).
But, man, what a ride. Definitely eagerly waiting season 2.
Cars 2 (2011)
I mean, it isn't bad
Okay, yes, it's definitely way too dark thematically for Cars, which is a kids' movie. But it does work as an action movie. And, rewatching it now, 10 years later, it ain't that bad, really.
The only issue I have is at the end when Holly flies into Radiator Springs and Mater publicly declares them both spies.
I find it very unrealistic for spies to just allow themselves to be reveleaed in public like that.
Apart from that, it was okay.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Explosive
It's exactly what to expect when someone makes a movie where Godzilla and Kong go at it.
Two big monsters doing as much property damage as possible. If you're here for epic monster battles, then yes, it's pretty good.
The only bug I have with it is how Kong accepted that Godzilla was not the enemy. But I'm just here for the monster fights.
I got what I came for.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Meh
Plot-holed mess. Also kinda cringey. It's too dark for younger kids but too plain and simplistic for older kids and adults.
All this movie has going for it is being Representative of South-East Asians. But that alone doesn't make a good movie.
A good movie makes a good movie.
It looks really good, I'll say that much. But still...meh.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Blown away
Admittedly, four hours is a lot and I had to break it into two sessions, but the time spent was worth it. Everything is kept relevant and the movie itself has stunning visuals. The fight scenes are fantastic and have heavy rock music pumping in the back.
I did have a few issues with the movie. I was a little disappointed that Steppenwolf was the final enemy and not Darkseid. I guess Snyder wanted to stop the movie from going any further because...4 hours. Wow.
Also the battle music is a bit inconsistent, I'd say. It doesn't prevail throughout the battle. It sort of comes and goes. Also, the aspect ratio put me off a little. I wasn't expecting a square movie.
The CGI was amazing. I have no idea what these 1/10 reviewers are talking about. Another thing 1/10 reviews say is that the jokes were bad. But there weren't any jokes. Marvel movies have jokes because Marvel movies are more light-hearted than DC. There were no jokes here.
The colour palette is a very dull and dark-toned, but it matches the tone of the movie. DC movies are dark anyway, so what are you complaining about?
Overall, amazing experience. Definitely recommended if you're willing to spend 4 hours on a movie.
Jujutsu Kaisen (2020)
Unexpectedly good
I was skeptical at first, like: oh what's the big deal about Jujutsu Kaisen? Kid eating a finger? Ew, gross.
But then I watched it. And I loved it! The artstyle is very much like Parasyte the Maxim's art. The rotoscope animation is fluid and beautiful, the fight scenes are exhilarating.
The story is well-paced and the is never hesitant to make references to other anime and movues like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z. Hell, there's even a scene where Yuuji (MC) is watching "The Lord of the Rings". It feels a little MHA-ish with two Sorcerer academies and the MCs being students and all.
The concept is basically MHA + Mob Psycho (with less comedy and more gore) + Parasyte the Maxim.
It's also pretty feminist, which is something you don't usually see in anime. It depicts women fighting against the standards placed on them by their clans.
The two things I like but don't love are the plot and the characters. The plot is pretty basic. It takes some back-and-forth timeskips and isn't linear. But it's not convoluted and is pretty simple to follow along.
The characters are pretty two-dimensional (for now). They have no space for personal growth. Only the growth of their powers.
This is why I gave it 8/10.
The show's philosophy looks like it'll be dealing with humanity's sins and how those sins can curse the world, but it isn't very clear right now.
Either way, I'd totally recommend this beautifully animated piece of work.
Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2009)
My #1 favourite anime
Can't believe I waited so long to post a review (literally years).
Best anime I've ever watched (and I've watched a lot of big names like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia).
Music is epic (one thing that even the haters accept), plot is ambitious. Funny, serious, dark when needed but light when not.
A lot of haters complain of clichés. But what's cliche to us now, probably wasn't cliche back in 2009. So, forget about every "trope" you may have in your mind and watch this as if it's the first shounen you've ever watched.
It's a deep study and criticism of scientism and government involvement in scientific studies and the horrors science can do.
Definitely recommended. I didn't give this a 10/10 rating because not every loose plot string was tied in the end.
But those plot voids are minor and don't affect story in any way.
Episode one of the anime is not part of the source material but serves as a good introduction to the world.
Definitely watch it.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Great anime... For now
So, I'm a full-on FMAB fan and to be honest, that top spot on Myanimelist feels like it's gonna go to the Attack Titan final season.
Nevertheless, I'll leave a good review.
Art: Inconsistent. The first two seasons had amazing art. 3rd season took a downgrade. Fourth season changed the artwork completely. Is this bad? Well, it depends. I personally think an anime should take an artstyle and stick to it. So, it bugs me how much the art of Attack Titan changes, but this may be just me. 8/10.
Animations: Amazing. Animations remain top-notch from season 1 to the final season. I do find the rotoscoping in the MAPPA production a little cringy. For a 2D animation, realistic movements can come off as unnatural, but I'll let it slide. Only a few scenes actually have rotoscoping. A lot of people are also hating on the CGI Titans in season 4. Again, I don't really care. Honestly, I didn't even notice the difference until I saw people complaining about the CGI. 9/10.
Music: Attack Titan has heavy orchestral music for its OSTs and rock for its normal soundtracks. The music constantly stays dark when it has to but can soemtiems be light. I don't like how they ditched some soundtracks. Like the one at the end of season 2 when historia goes beast mode on the Pure Titans. The music has this war-theme in mind. A lot of the OSTs are all war songs. 8/10.
Story: A little dicey. The plot, overall, seems okay. I say "okay" because there is a major plot hole that could ruin the story if it goes unaddressed. I'll wait until the show ends before jumping to any conclusions. But as it stands, the story is well rounded-up and well-written. 8/10.
Characters: Characters are a little unbalanced in my opinion. A 3-dimensional character will have backstory, personality and growth. While all characters have personality and most of them have backstory, only some of them have growth. Eren, Reiner and Historia are the three best-written characters in the series, I would say. Levi has backstory and personality, but no growth. A lot of other characters are the same. 7/10.
The one thing I don't like about this show:
How it went from horror to military action. In seasons 1 and 2, Titans are portrayed as these terrifying creatures who give humans horrific deaths. However, this terror is discarded after season 2. We're no longer afraid of the Titans because while the Titans are relevant to the plot, the horror that they cause and all those deaths and blood and gore were just a plot device to keep the first two seasons going. If you hate the goriness, don't worry, there's almost none of it after season 2. Almost.
Great show overall, for now. I like FMAB better, but since I'm reviewing Attack Titan, it's not fair for me to compare the two of them.
Definitely watch it. Good show.
Just stay away from the manga fanbase. They spoil everything. Don't view a single SnK meme or Google a single thing about it or you'll get spoiled. Trust me.
Cheerio.
Boku no hîrô akademia (2016)
Surprisingly good
A friend of mine kept telling me to try My Hero Academia. I stopped watching shounen because they stretch forever. One Piece is going 1000+ chapters, so I wasn't so sure if I wanted to start watching My Hero Academia.
But, boy, am I glad I did. The show is amazing. I'm watching season 2 now and this is the only anime besides FMAB and SnK that has kept me binging through it.
So, what's so great about My Hero Academia? Well, when you think about it, it's a run-of-the-mill shounen with an ambitious protagonist, a friend whom he is always in competition with and a host of other people with powers just like his. Sounds like every other shounen ever, right?
My Hero Academia feels fresh because of the artstyle. You could recognise My Hero Academia art if you saw. I think it's important for anime to have a uniquely recognisable artstyle. A lot of top anime do.
But that's not the only reason. The music choices are also fantastic. I mean, it's no FMAB, but the soundtracks in My Hero Academia really pump you up. I get goosebumps every time Deku goes beast mode and that uplifting violin music plays in the background.
Animations are amazing. Super fluid, fast-paced when it has to be, but slow and detailed when required as well, the animations are on-point.
Characters. A lot of people berate My Hero Academia for its lack of character development. But those are the people who have only watched season 1. Shounen anime typically take entire seasons to introduce a new character. For example, in the first season of Naruto, we're introduced to naruto's entire class. However, only Team 7 is explored in season 1. And even that, it's mostly Naruto and his motivations.
So, to say a shounen anime has no character development after watching only 1 season is irrational.
Also, it never forgets plot elements. For example, when the villains attack the USJ in season 1, there was talk about a villain who was jamming the alarms. I'm so glad that they actually revealed to us who was jamming the alarms. It leaves you with a sense of satisfaction to see plot strings being tied up.
I didn't rate My Hero Academia 10/10 because the story is a generic and straightforward good guys vs bad guys story with no deep plots or anything.
But do I recommend this anime to you? Yes. I passed on this anime two years ago, but I'm so glad I finally started watching it.
Just try it. Trust me.
We Bare Bears: The Movie (2020)
Kinda cringy, but not bad
The entire movie felt like a parody of every internet thing out there from memes to dance moves and I found it kinda cringy to watch. Also, out of nowhere, the bears are suddenly talking like modern-day teens as opposed to their more adult-like speech from before. But the movie was good. I would've preferred more screen time for Chloe, Ranger Tabes etc. but meh. It was okay.
The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
Is this talking about colonialism?
To me, the story felt like a take on colonialism, since the pigs come to Bird Island, establish themselves and then take the island's most valuable resources (or in this case, items--the eggs).
The jokes were good, not great or gut-wrenching funny. I do like the characters, though.
But, the direction was bad. That scene with the explosions was so messy I couldn't tell what was going on. I knew what was happening, of course, but it was difficult to watch.
The movie was good, though. I don't know why so many people don't like it. It's not bad.
Fire Force (2019)
Has potential, but disappoints
Fire Force is AoT meets FMA(B), but everything's on fire.
I started the series incredibly excited by the premise and the promises the show made. I'm in season 2 episode 14 now, and I've lost interest.
The animations are amazing, dare I say it. The fight scenes are action-packed. Music is mostly rock and hard rock, if that's what you're into. The art is definitive. The steampunk Tokyo Empire and the characters are easily recognisable.
But the plot... Oh, the plot. It feels too much like AoT and FMA(B).
Here's Fire Force's story: a boy who lost his mother (but not younger brother) looking for a certain something accidentally stumbles upon a much greater conspiracy.
Sound familiar?
The Infernals would be flaming Titans. They're even created by humans, apparently. The Evangelist, who's like Father, is trying to achieve her ungodly mission by employing her faithful servants to find the Eight Pillars (Eight people with Adolla Bursts, I.e pure flames) to be "sacrifices".
Does that word ring a bell?
People receive an Adolla Burst if they see Hell itself. In FMA(B), they have to see the Truth, or God.
The writer uses expeditions as an excuse to send characters to important plot points. The first two arcs (the tournament and the Hibana-Iris story) didn't have expeditions and they were my favourite arcs. But that's all.
We have an expedition to the 1st Company. An expedition to the Nether. To China. To Haijima Industries.
Expedition. Fight bad guys. Learn a secret. That's it.
Some characters are bland. Tamaki's entire existence is for her clothes to be blown off and her body exposed. Inca, a supposedly independent girl, agrees to serve the Evangelist. New bad guys just keep coming with no reason, motivation or backstories of their own.
The whole story strucutre is repetitive and monotonous.
And finally the fight scenes. Animations aside, characters come in and out of battles for no reason. Scenes change too infrequently.
One example is when they're faced with about eight Infernal dogs but only fight three. The others just disappeared.
The broken fight scenes and irritating plot ruined it for me. I was expecting the show to end from like thirty episodes but the bad guys keep running away.
I've given up on this show. This anime truly disappointed me.
