Candela (2021)
Classic film noir Dominican style
I watched this movie without knowing what to expect and loved it. It has all the elements of a classic film noir a corrupt and burnt out cop, upperclass scandal and corruption, interwoven tales of underworld economy against the heady setting of Dominica Repblic on the eve of a hurricaine. Such good performances too, especially Perez who can luck disheveled and terrible and by turns can look kind of handsome and sexy. The Candela character is played beautifully what an amazing performance. So good. The visual beauty of the movie is amazing, ranging from gritty to spectacularly lush and colorful.

Great little suprise of a film
I watched this movie not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. This is a great indie film. Some great performances here, especially the actor who plays Murda is really believable and good. The two main love interests have great chemistry together. Sometimes this feels like a light hearted rom-com, but it is definitely more than that. Definitely illustrates a double standard between men and women but then that is realistic in the world we live in.

I love this movie
I loved this indie film about a gay Dominican kid growing up in Queens New York. This film treads lightly and with humor through some subject matter that could have easily been disturbing and serious. I love the humor, the insider views to Dominican family dynamics that are so rare in film, and the performance by the main character Elliot. This film has that essential indie feeling where the story is more important than the production value and that ultimately leads to something that feels much more authentic than a Hollywood film.
