Treason (2022)
Awful - but there's hope
I could only stand to watch one episode. It's beyond terrible. We're supposed to believe that the new head of MI-6, in the midst of a crisis, insists on heading off home to see his kids off to bed. At home, he takes what I assume would be top secret phone calls with his wife right beside him, and his kids potentially in ear shot. Then he takes them all to a movie, and decides to stay for the whole thing, while an important message is awaiting him at a record store that will save hundreds of lives from a terrorism attack the next morning. As I watched it, it occurred to me that only a slight tweak to the dialog would allow it to be quite a good comedy. The main actor reminded me of Will Forte and.his MacGruber character. Just switch Will into the role, change the dialog slightly and I think we'd have a comedy hit on our hands.
Language Lessons (2021)
Enough with the video
After almost two years of Covid and communicating through video rather than in-person, the last thing I want to do is watch two people spend an entire movie meeting up through video chat. It starts with someone gifted 100 language lessons for $1,000. Yes, in 2021, $10 a lesson. I'd like that, please. And the entire movie takes place in all kinds of settings with the two.protagonists engaging at all hours, indoors and outdoors, with what seems like amazing video and camera angles that would only be possible if you had a team of people around you handling the audio and video. And, of course, the person supposedly taking the lessons is able to converse from the very beginning in Spanish, without any issues. Amazing! Every aspect of the film is so implausible I was left wondering how on earth this thing got a 7+ rating on IMDB.
Tesla (2020)
Half-Baked Documentary
A disappointing mess that wastes the great talents of Ethan Hawke and Eve Hewson. Oscillating between documentary and drama, it tries too hard to be clever, mixing 1890s America with references to modern times (Ethan sings 'everybody wants to rule the world', Eve talks to the screen about Googling things discussed in the movie, etc.). There's not much of a storyline and little to inspire in the dialogue either.
Nabarvene ptace (2019)
Gratuitous Violence
This had a 7.3 score on IMDB when we decided to rent this film. It's hard to fathom how anyone gives this a high score. It's a truly awful movie. We could only endure about 30 minutes of seemingly pointless, unnecessary and graphic violence towards animals, birds and people. There seemed to be no storyline, and little to no dialogue. Just seemingly non-stop violence.
