The Secret Life of Machines: The Secret Life of the Television Set (1988)
Unique, entertaining and educational series from decades ago but still great today!
Tim Hunkin's wonderful unique straight-forward approach to demonstrating for the Average Viewer just how a seemingly complex piece of equipment works. The Television Set is my favourite episode, simply due to the end sequence where they build a bonfire to burn a pyramid of live working cathode-ray-tube televisions, and we get to witness them dying one by one with differing behaviours. You couldn't do that with modern digital flat-screen TV's that would simply just go blank! GREAT stuff from the 90's that's still entertaining and educational to watch today! Tim and Rex filmed most of their stunts at their remote location in Lowestoft, on the east coast of East Anglia, UK - when Health and Safety requirements didn't limit their adventurism!
Race to Perfection (2020)
Perhaps mostly of interest for those who already know the history?
OK, it's a vast subject to cover with just 7 episodes, so maybe I was expecting too much, but I was a bit disappointed with the first episode. I'd think this series would be mostly of interest to 'beginners to F1' wanting to learn more about its history, but alas I think it would confuse rather than educate. It was somewhat disjointed, with some important events shown out of sequence. Important characters featured (such as Bernie Ecclestone) should have been better 'explained' to the viewer. So it's really going to appeal mostly to those who already know the majority of the history, which kind of defeats the object. Maybe later episodes will get better?
