Tripping Beneath the Spring Clouds (2022)
Tripping with Someone Who Won't Let Us Relax For A Second!
Don't mind me, just reflecting on my own work.
Okay, I'll start with the positives. There are some funny moments, the zip line scene is great, and some of the music is nice... well, that was short.
The first half hour is really slow, with minimal to nothing going on before this Jacob guy goes on holiday. An example being him looking through things after the diary introduction; it serves nothing to the film. We only find out around 25 minutes into the film, that Wales will be the main location.
Once we do get there we have to go through your typical stuff like unpacking, shopping, etc. Jacob would normally be funny, but he tries a little too hard and says a thing every 5 seconds of the movie. The movie would be more laidback and relaxing if it was silent, etc.
Another problem is that we spend minimal time at Wales; roughly 45 minutes in fact (literally HALF of the movie). There's little to no time to check the mountains, the environment to admire, the waterfall or the beach afterwards... it only stays there for a minute then moves on.
We even get a cop out with the mountain scenery, with a brief pause to say "Jacob got tired and had to survive". We spend most of the time at either a caravan or at the bar/arcades. Don't get me wrong, the scenery is beautiful, but it missed the potential to let us breathe for a minute or without a forced joke.
The music is repetitive, using the same beats and melodies throughout; that's it.
While I do see people enjoying this movie for its simplicity and environments, I think it's one of my more overrated films. It's slow, tries too hard to be funny at times, and then gets waaaaay too fast during its second half.
If you want a more fun and fast vacay film, the second and soon third films may help. Maybe I should make a better Wales film next time.
Wish (2023)
I "wish" I felt something...
Before you ask, yes, I am aware that this is a children's movie... but that's no excuse to make something not so great. And this is from someone who thinks filmmaking is an art form.
I went into Disney's 100th anniversary movie with fairly low expectations and felt rather curious to see if it's any good... it wasn't imo. Nothing made me laugh or smile, but nothing made me angry or frustrated...
Instead, I felt nothing. Does this mean I hate the movie? No. It's just generic stuff that just didn't entertain me. The songs (especially the lyrics) weren't that good; for example, This Is The Thanks I Get is something I don't count as a villain song, but is a guilty pleasure of mine, because it is a bit catchy.
The animation had potential, but it kind of looked... off. I don't know, it's mainly the character designs, etc (the 2D worked amazingly with Once Upon A Studio).
The story didn't do much for me, the characters were... "eh" (although King Magnifico is the best part), the goat wasn't funny... yeah, that's how I can describe it.
Wish is a "nothing" movie and a disappointment to a 100 year anniversary film, but if you love it, then I'm glad you did. I simply didn't...
Disney may have tried, but I wish it could've been better.
Getting Sketchy (2021)
Easily the worst JacHarv movie.
Not a lot to be said here.
Awful story, that's all over the place. Filler that wastes two hours of your life. Characters that are either forgettable, one-joke or downright stupid. Music that's... kinda decent, I guess. Comedy that doesn't get one chuckle out of me (especially Woody being thrown or hurt every few minutes). Weak or OTT voice acting from Jacob, etc.
...okay, now the full thoughts. The story didn't need to be stretched out with scenes that do nothing. And why did Woody and Sgt. Dummy split ways from Jacob? They could've teamed up.
Why did Mikey simply tell Jacob to make a good plot, and not give a single piece of advice? Why did the cameraman suddenly become a character for a few minutes?
Why does Oofdy and Harmonica have the single worst villain plan ever? How can you sabotage a script, when they can just make a new one or trick them? Speaking of, how does Harmonica and Chef Charley turn GOOD after just one millisecond? That's not character development!
Why is the action so unexciting and flat, even for the climax? It makes the watch more uneventful. Even the fight between Jacob and the pig plush could've been faster, more suspenseful and comedic.
Why does Woody being thrown count as a joke? Why are there sketches interrupting the movie? Why does Jacob literally LEAVE HappyTown at the end, after failing to make one movie?
To answer these questions, all I can say is this. The movie is too stupid and inconsistent. Only good thing is the music, and the scene where Woody almost leaves before Jacob calls him back, before the climax.
Go spend more of your time on something laidback like the Tripping movies, or something compelling like Cornetto Season, or something very random and a bit entertaining like Life in a Day.
As the exact guy who made this from day one to the end, PLEASE skip this film at all costs. 1/10.
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
A long, distracting WB commercial making a slam disappointment.
Yes, I have seen the first Space Jam and it was... meh. But certainly better than what we got here, especially as a smaller filmmaker.
I do have good things about the sequel, though. The animation is great! I like how it keeps the usual charm of the Looney Tunes and is the best part of the movie. More specifically the 2D animation... the CGI is okay.
I also liked the last 25 minutes, that being the basketball game's final quarters where the Looney Tunes get to be their usual selves which is entertaining and sometimes, even funny to watch.
With that said, there are problems that make this a slam disappointment.
The acting isn't the best, but hey, at least it isn't like 2003's The Room.
The plot is like the first film, mixed with a message hammered into your head: Looney Tunes gathering together to play basketball with a superstar, the team wins, etc. The message of being yourself is fine enough, but what seriously bothers me is that every 5 minutes of the movie, it's "You've got to get your son back!". I know this is a kids movie, but that is a poor excuse for any movie. Kids have more vivid imaginations and would get the point after just one or two times, let alone nearly 10.
Sooo, what gives the movie a 4 out of 10 for me? The overuse of IPs! I am not kidding when I say this but I kept getting very distracted by these pop-culture references (although the cartoons being added into WB films like Mad Max: Fury Road or The Matrix sounds like a cool idea at first) as well as Warner Bros showcasing every franchise, brand and character they own! Even getting Rick & Morty (a show intended for Adult Swim, btw) to have a cameo. Kids aren't going to get every reference and the fact they play specific music for Harry Potter or whatnot feels rather cringy to me. It feels like I'm watching a 2 hour long WB commercial for their stuff; that it's my biggest issue of the movie.
Yeah, this is a 115 minute film! Imagine Warner Brothers shoving their IPs into your face for that long, including smaller details in the background for money to get their products or see them. Sure, kids may enjoy the animation and other aspects but honestly, WB shoving in their IPs (including their own logo seen at the start of their films) just makes me not enjoy it enough to be called good. There are some good stuff but everything else was distracting or just plain not good.
With that, a 4/10 is good in my book thanks to the repetition (including the plot) and Warner Bros making a hammering, promotional commercial rather than, oh idk, a true Looney Tunes sequel. I don't care for huge promotional stuff, I'd rather entertain with something actually fun, like a live basketball game.
The Rodfellows Movie (2020)
Lame
I've seen bits of the film and... it looks bad. Plus, I admittedly SUCKED at voice acting a small character!
