Paddington (2014)
just nice
This is just a pretty feel good film. I think the effects are pretty good. The characters are really impressionable and charismatic, and the mild mannered british sense of humor is actually funny, with every other aspect just reinforcing this films fun nature.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
one classic piece of animation
Just a really well told story about the journey of self discovery thats enhanced with really great vocal performances, epic music, really great animation, and stunning art direction.
The Climb (2019)
a great buddy movie
Just a really well made film about life and friendship that has great writing, cinematography, performances and characters that have a lot of heart and leave an impression on you. great moobie
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
a pretty great thriller
This is just a well executed, dour, thriller that brings out a lot of visceral emotions. Performances are great. cinematography is great and the directions is great. Just a really unique emotional and thrilling film
Ging chaat goo si (1985)
a zeitgeist action flick
Just a really well made action movie that has all the charm and charisma of the 80s with the standouts being the amazing choreography and stunt work by jackie and team.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
an odd and fun adventure
Although the story and narrative is that of a typical/basic heroes journey, a lot of the awe inspiring stuff comes from all the practical affect, costumes, make up, and set/production design.
Bakjwi (2009)
another zeitgeist korean classic
An artfully presented film that gives the classic vampire tale a modern twist thats gives a lot of visceral reactions.
The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)
an odd animated epic
An incredibly fun and masterfully animated film that puts a clever and somewhat dour spin on the mark twain mythos
Nanatsu no taizai (2014)
kinda below average
Some of the good aspects about this show would have to be the dynamics between the characters and the art direction when it comes to the world building, but other than that, every other element is lacking. Some of the character designs are rather blatant (you know if you know), the narrative and the story is pretty predictable and derivative, causing for the pacing to be rather slow, and oddly enough i cant recall a moment throughout the four season run where ive been impressed by the animation. all in all poorly directed show of what could've been an ok adaptation of the source material.
Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020)
dour but fun
A thoughtful and heartfelt way to present the inherent aspect of life that is death
The White Tiger (2021)
charming film
Even though the technical aspects are pretty standard in quality, the film succeeds in having a charismatic lead and a authentic production, with the main draw being the narrative about the dynamics between the working and upper class.
Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan (2019)
jojo still isnt good
The only things i can appreciate from this show is the unique and ambitious art direction/design. other than that, all the other aspects technically and non are slightly below mediocre from the animation to the story/narrative.
Small Axe: Lovers Rock (2020)
vibe piece
This is a well made film with a slow enough pace that makes you appreciate the beautiful colors and cinematography, the music, the costumes and the characters.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
a dour think piece
This film, as inaccessible and ambitious as it might be, is a well made bleak fantasy where all the elements of movie making are well made and utilized, making the end result to be a profound and challenging experience about the human condition.
Small Axe: Mangrove (2020)
Well made period piece really
This is just a really well crafted film where all of the aspects of it, technical and non, are presented in a meaningful way that's in service of the story its telling about its subject matter while showing a lot of heart and personality.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
another animation great
Spirited away is so dense with themes and topics but over all its all in service to tell this coming of age story thats told amazingly. the world that miyazaki and team create is absolutely creative and beautiful. each character design is unique along with each location which on a visual level is just so rich in culture and if you do your research all adds this hidden subtext. the music is sweet and memorable. paired along with the gorgeous animation spirited away is just one of the greatest in animation and really there isn't anything new that is to be said here.
The Master (2012)
this film is an experience
The master is about so many things but the main ideas that stand out to me are those of existentialism and that loss of loved ones which are explored beautifully through the visuals and performances. this is phoenix at his best and a favorite of mine from hoffman. the film may be shot on the more static but this film is just one of the best looking ones of the decade and accompanied by greenwoods score just makes this film so hypnotic. one criticism i can understand about the film is its unconventional narrative which does fit well thematically but i do admit does make it hard to sit through on first time watches. overall i am in awe of the master and is another great character piece by pta.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
another great character piece
There will be blood has got one of the most complex and compelling characters to be introduced into cinema but daniel day lewis's great and charismatic portrayal of said character would be nothing without the other qualities of the film which pta and team do a great job with. the film is shot and blocked well, the use of music and sound is great and adds so much to each scene in terms of just subtext and tone, its also accompanied well by the editing, and i dont really think there is a bad performance in this film. just a great character piece that gets better with each viewing.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
another great thriller from fincher
Girl with a dragon tattoo is just another well made film from fincher on every aspect. all the technical stuff is impressive as always but what i enjoyed most was finchers trademark mature narrative. the film takes a unique direction in terms of how characters and they're arcs are set up and where they lead and contrasts with the pace of the plot. rooney mara's performance is the stand out and her characters dynamic with craig's is fun to watch on screen. overall this is another stylish and great film from fincher that is probably in his top 5.
Mary and Max. (2009)
one of the best in animations
Mary and max is a tale about friendship that's told in a unique way. what makes this film so unique is its tone, presenting these dour and bleak situations in a up beat tone which i honestly don't think would work entirely well if it wasn't in this medium, but the animation lends itself so well to that. all the character designs are unique along with the setting, production, and the use of color and lighting which all put an emphasis on how ugly this world is, which i love. i consider that to be a commentary on just how imperfect people are which is one of themes along side loneliness and friendship, and it very much wears those themes on its sleeve and that would be one of my criticisms if it wasn't for how oddly charming it all comes together. i kinda love this film and i wish i had more like it that are as unique.
Master of None (2015)
well made comedy
This show is just one of my favorites just for how much of a breath of fresh air it is. the way it handles all these contemporary issues such as love and relationships, religion, traditions, families, cultures, getting old, racism, and existentialism all in the modern age is just so nuanced. what brings it all together is the well made direction, writing, and artful presentation, this show would very much feel pretentious if it didn't handle those things well but as of now it is incredibly charming and honest and one of the best.
Mindhunter (2017)
serial killer epic
Mind hunter is just an incredibly well made show with finchers fingerprints all over it, even the episodes he doesn't direct, and has actual depth. the whole serial killer aspect is very much the hook of it but the real meat is all the characters, their arcs, and how each one of them and their actions provides a commentary about the philosophies, politics, and ideologies of the time. and i very much understand the ideas of "filler" or "throw away" stuff some people take out, even me, but on multiple watches i've realized every narrative aspect has a purpose to the show that just adds levels of subtlety and nuance to the world this show creates. every character isn't perfect, not every case is solved, not every problem is resolved with guns, every meaningful interaction is a fight, the good guys really win, but when the show ends i'm very much satisfied that.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
just a good action film
Mad max: fury road is very much just a vessel for all these crazy action ideas and concepts but what sets it apart from any other action block buster s that this film just manages to impress me and at the end i'm kind of just in awe of what miller and team are able to achieve in this. this film is very much just a chase and and race with character that don't have much depth but the presentation and all the technical stuff is the real meat. seeing all these insanely designed cars crashing and exploding while you see all the stunt men and women jumping off of them is just absurdly fun and one could very easily dismiss that but the fact that all these stunts and sequences are done practically just adds this level of authenticity and just draws me in. the design of this world just adds so much character, as mentioned, all the cars are just so interesting to look at and are so distinct that you can very much consider them their own character in the film and sure the actual characters have as much depth as the loony tune cast but seeing them dressed up in these very detailed, distinct, and sometimes disturbing costumes. seeing all of this on screen is just so memorable and paired with the music just makes this film an exhilarating experience. there's a copy of this film that in black and white that the director says adds like this abstract tone to it, and i've seen that version of the film and it isn't this absurd, profound, subjective reality type of experience but i very much understand what he means seeing that it does put this emphasis on that apocalyptic tone and i rather much personally prefer that, but over all fury road is just fun. and ho doesn't like tom hardy's occasional incomprehensible mumbling.
Suspiria (2018)
one of the best horrors films of the decade
This film provides one of the most unique horror experiences ive ever had. a lot of the horror aspects come from the tone the film conveys in its very cold color pallete and lighting, the subtext of the civil war setting and production design, the melancholy music, and the slow, droning tension that builds up all throughout the film, over all the presentation is what really brings it home. even small details like the sound design that accompanies the more gory sequences really make you cringe and disgust at whats happening on screen (in a good way). dance sequences have this chilling aura to them and i love how the choreography and the editing put an emphasis to that and go hand in hand. but the aspect that left the biggest impression on me were the costumes and make up which are all just super impressive and at times evoke so many emotions from me ranging from dread, fear, disgust, theres even one character that can honestly be nightmare fueling. my only personal criticism that i have for the film is that it is very slow even for taste but once i get to the climax of the film i very much feel that it pays off because the sheer horror i feel towards what happens on screen and how its presented is one that ive never experienced in any other horror film before which i absolutely love. suspiria 2018 is one of the best horror films of the decade. if you liked call me by your name youll like this, they have the same director.
Rango (2011)
up there with all the other westerns and animated features
What verbinski and his odd cast of talent do in this film is surprisingly charming and creative on every level and the direction they decide to go with it is unique way more so than any other animated feature to come out this past decade. the music is great, the look of this in terms of the animation and overall cinematography is awesome. there are moments where they apply real world filming effects to the look of this ANIMATED feature and it just makes it look great. all the vocal performances are great, this is probably the only performance i personally like from johnny depp but i believe bill nighy is the standout to me as the villain rattle snake jake. the character design is my favorite thing about rango. all the characters are so distinct and unique from other and i find how ugly and dirty they all look. ive never seen so much creativity and personality conveyed in a visual aspect as much as in rango. and the things and sequences you find these characters in are just so much fun and so creative. this whole movie is just all around creative. very much a fun experience.
