Cupcake & Dino: General Services (2018)
Funny cute show
Often humour in kids shows can feel a bit simplistic and patronising for adults but I genuinely found this to be a refreshing gem.
The storylines do however get a little repetitive, with Dino getting swept up in something and Cupcake either feeling left out or trying to stop Dino from going too far or burning himself out. The episodes tend to end with them realising they are better as a team and that bring the moral of the story.
Overall it's a great show with a bright and cheery art style and original characters with substance to them. I watch this when I'm sad and it fully immerses me in the silliness of Big City and its inhabitants.
Would recommend for all ages.
What We Do in the Shadows: Freddie (2022)
A bit messed up
This episode had a great premise in that we find out he has secretly been dating Freddie, a sweet and polite stereotypical British man. It would have been funny seeing him interact with Lazlo and Nadja and their opinions of the Freddie/Guillermo relationship.
Instead we get Nandor behaving incredibly out of character and being jealous of Guillermo (not Freddie??)
Nandor states that he is against cheating on his wife but completely okay with taking away her entire personhood and turning Marwa into a clone of a white British man for his enjoyment.
The actor that plays Freddie tries his best with the script but this episode just feels unpleasant and unfunny.
The writers have clearly been pushing Nandor and Guillermo romantic undertones but it doesn't work if, as a viewer you start to dislike one of the characters in the pairing.
Guillermo (a recently out gay man) has his heart broken, Marwa (a woman of colour) gets basically killed off and the whole nightclub thing begins to grow stale.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020)
Obsessed with this show!
The intro isn't great and the character animation is a bit janky but wow I love so much about this series!
The character development and group dynamic is done really well and combined with dinosaurs and a thrilling storyline... it just works.
I thought it would be overly childish but I would definitely recommend this to adults. It deals with themes such as: friendship difficulties, young romance, bio family vs found family, lgbtq struggles, ptsd and more. The latter was represented surprisingly accurately in one of the characters, though it was seemingly forgotten about after lasting just a few episodes.
I really grew to love the characters and though I'm sad there won't be a 6th season, I think the ending tied the show off in a satisfying way.
Dead End: Paranormal Park (2022)
Amazing comfort show
The colours and animation really absorb you completely into the world of this park and the voice acting is really good. The characters are original and likeable and I like the trans representation as well as how Norma's neurodivergency is handled. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the whole Pauline Phoenix thing, It was a bit convoluted especially for a kids show. This may be personal preference though.
