30 for 30: Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau (2013)
the humanity, poignancy....
Humanity and poignancy of this documentary touched me very much. Exceptional direction (Sam George) and production. Bravo!! I am happy to recently have an opportunity to meet Ben Aipa last October 2013, who is also in the documentary. Appreciated talking with you in your shop, Ben! There had not been much if any bio of Eddie Aikau up to the time of this documentary. The documentary seems to be in thirds....the first part is of his family background, the second part is of his life as big wave surfer and lifeguard at Waimea Bay, North Shore, and the third part is of the Haluke'a and interviews. So beautifully done, this is indeed the gem of the ESPN '30 for 30' bios. It did win the Surfer Mag-2013 'Surfer's Poll' award for BEST DOCUMENTARY. This is a must have DVD for your personal library, if you can find it.
The Wild Wild West: The Night of the Man-Eating House (1966)
One of the best WWW episodes
This is one of the best episodes. And since The Wild, Wild, West is coming out at this writing {March 2007} with the second season on DVD, I will probably get the DVD set. Best for screen-write, storyline, James & Artemus chemistry (and good Ross Martin acting piece), with a surprise ending which added just another touch to the screenwriter's gem of a story. If you like a good ghost story, this is one of the few (if not only) Wild, Wild, West production done in the genre of spooky-type ghost story without being over-the-top at all. Good supporting cast and good art set. There is really no more to say, just enjoy it when you see it. Do bring the popcorn.
The Bridge (2006)
The 45+ age group voted this film high....
Living longer having had some experience with life, relationships, and people may lend itself partial explanation as to why the 45+ plus age group generally voted this film higher than the ones who voted with low scores. I'm 52 at viewing of this film and I voted it highly for its documentary information. Not just a film of those who have died there, but is a film of those friends and families left behind and showing their poignancy, humanity, their spirituality as a reflection moving on and living on. The film's interview with a survivor of a suicide attempt from the Golden Gate Bridge is a good addition to the quality of the film. An interesting hearing of what it is like to survive from such a high 200' fall, and the damaging affect from such a fall on the physical body.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2004)
Poetic and Metaphysical.......
Will depend on where you are in life and your own presence of what you think spiritually and philosophically for how well you like this film. Was not a boring film to me, as some have commented. Jon Voight is excellent. All supporting characters do well including a familiar face from the HBO drama series The Sopranos. The film captured well the heavy handed behavior of Fathers in the generation past. Themes of spiritual lessons as focus in the afterlife against the backdrop of Earth incarnation survival, violence, and just living life. I was impressed with the music score and it was fitting for the subject matter. The music score captures a rendition of what it seems the essence of that crossing over would be. Suppose when you die, you meet five people: they each have already crossed over and each of them have something to teach you, something to share of themselves that provides you more understanding of what happened during their lives and perhaps during their lives involving you. And suppose it may have something to do with forgiveness, perhaps you forgiving them of something? Or perhaps them forgiving you or something. Those are the themes of the movie. It is a thoughtful film. I will no more comment other than I give it a good rating.
Billabong Odyssey (2003)
Opening sequence.....OUTSTANDING!!!
Big wave surfers Who's Who in this documentary that is very informative of how surfing has evolved since the 60's with the advent of the jet ski to help catch 40 to 50 plus feet waves.
The movie begins and ends with the footage of Mike Parsons' ride (shot from the beginning where his partner's jet ski pulls him onto the very beginning of the sea swell before it rises high above the cameraman) on what will be a very large wave at Jaws in Hawaii. Forty-five feet high at least. Who ever was holding the camera for this shot filmed a classic and there are many classic shots of surf riding.
It was a treat to see this footage twice in the movie, at both ends.
Dragonfly (2002)
Not the best of type genre, but worthy all the way.
Good supporting cast from Kathy Bates, Linda Hunt, and a fine performance from Jacob Vargas as a South American private pilot. Fine performances from the two children in the hospital. I guess I would have liked to see Costner script show more than just confused or bemused. But one must remember that the Costner character was severe grief over the loss of his wife.
Not the best of the type genre, but I was entertained all of the way. Worth the price of admission.
Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970)
about the best of the type genre
I agree with those that say this was an entertaining movie. Of the blaxploitation films, this was the more classier. Fine acting from Cambridge, Lockhart, and others. Ossie Davis direction very good.
The Others (2001)
Well done.
I am giving a different kind of Review for this movie. I will not write on plot. But in this way, for those of you who are aware of explanations that psychics and metaphysical people put out as to the reason why some spirits may stay around earthbound and not choose to go "..to the Light" so-to-speak,.....for those of you interested in that aspect of life and spirituality, this is a well-crafted entertainment.
I like being both entertained and in trying to figure what is going on in a movie. But in hindsight, I always like being entertained first. Thus in this movie I found my 'figuring out'what was going on, changing several times through out the movie. With an Oh! and a smile. That's the well-craftedness of the movie. Along with thoughtfulness, I was both touched and entertained by how the writers put it together.
I say it does no service to read in detail what the movie is about, for it would take away from the entertainment. I will say that it would not take away to say that the movie at first gives no evidence that it is a ghost story, evidence more at first is like that it is a psychological thriller.
The people who made this movie did it much justice. One of the more entertaining movies of the Year, 2001.
Regards, Rhodes.
