Dark Winds (2022– )

Excellent series, very satisfying
11 May 2024
Set in the land of enchantment (New Mexico) - beautiful rural setting, a welcome change from gritty urban crime shows. Excellent performances, good plots and writing. Good pace and plenty of suspense. Wasn't able to second guess where the show was heading. The cast includes a lot of Native American actors. It's about time. Includes a lot of Dine language which is beautiful to hear. Wonderful cinematography. I got introduced to some Navajo culture - traditions, customs. While the show deals with crime and catching the bad guys, there are other layers and side stories. The show conveys a strong commitment to justice and fairness and respect for others. Great soundtrack too.

Excellent series

Don't know how we missed this excellent series. We've just discovered it and, as we are in season 1, we still have five more seasons to look forward to. The plots and script are very good. It's set in rural Wyoming, a refreshing change from urban police procedurals. The sheriff's county is next to a Cheyenne reservation, so there is a lot of interaction between non-Indian and Cheyenne people/cultures. There is a strong sense of justice, loyalty, dedication to doing what's right, which is another refreshing change from many dark police procedurals. The show avoids stereotypes but some characters are painted with a broad brush.

Terrific show

We just found this British crime show on Britbox (through Prime). What a happy discovery. At the beginning of the first episode,we weren't sure, but it quickly grabbed our attention. The acting and script are top notch. Joanna Scanlan (the boss) is a standout. Looking forward to watching the next season(s).

Beautiful, interesting, mysterious, dark
25 January 2024
Tom Hardy always delivers. The casting and performance are solid. Intriguing plot. Beautifully filmed - the framing, composition, palette, etc. Dark and mysterious. This series is filled with talent - Tom Hardy, David Hayman, Jonathan Pryce to name only a few of the top tier actors; Ridley Scott was one of the producers. The plot has some interesting twists. The protagonist had spent several years in Africa and has returned with some mystical abilities, like visions and communicating with the dead. He often speaks in another language-Wikipedia describes his use of numerous phrases from the Ghana Twi language used by the Akan people of Africa. The story is leading us to believe the character is going to get retribution for himself and others.

Another Australian home run
31 March 2023
This is a very interesting and satisfying show because it has a good script, wonderful performances by all and interesting character actors. Good photography, editing and production value. They speak in English and in different aboriginal languages:dialects with subtitles. The aboriginal culture is so interesting. And being a different culture, we couldn't second guess who-done-it or where the story was taking us. Nothing was predictable. This should have a second season starring Rarriwuy Hick and Luke Taylor (Long John silver in Black Sails). They have a strong screen presence and good chemistry together.

Give us the rest of season 1! And season 2!

***they say this is a golden age of Australian cinema - believe it. This is another Excellent Australian crime drama. Travis Fimmel is a plus. All performances are very good. Believable and interesting. Good script. Gripping show, we're hooked, and so frustrated that we only got four episodes on Prime. Why do they do this?! ***

***Shows a part of Australian culture, history and location that We haven't seen before. Australia is diverse and rich in cultures and natural environment. It adds so much interest to Australian shows. ***

***If anyone can figure out how to get the rest of this show in the United States (other than with Roku), please post it. Far and wide. ***

Don't miss this series

Two seasons - we wish there were more. This show hooked us. We became quickly invested in these peoples lives. Interesting characters and plots and excellent script. The story and characters feel genuine, the plot and dialogue are meaningful and thought-provoking (never cloying). The performances are fantastic, so natural, and so engaging.

The series has won several well deserved awards. This show has been an eye opener for me. I can't recommend this series enough. This is the first series I have seen whose cast is almost entirely Aboriginal peoples and the soundtrack is by Aboriginal musicians/songwriters.

I can't recommend this series enough.

Excellent series hope there's a season 3
31 July 2022
We enjoyed season 2 thoroughly. Very good writing and performances. Jess savage and Justin Harding characters are engaging, as are all the characters.

Really like the Maori actors, culture and language; there should be more Maori characters.

The setting/scenery is beautiful.

We're looking forward to Season 3!

Very good show if you can handle a toxic work environment
6 April 2022
We very much enjoyed the characters Grace, Mel, Spence, Frankie and Felix. However, Peter Boyd, their boss, is a pain. He constantly yells and berates his staff. We tried to stay with the show - we're in season 6 - but we're done with Boyd and his tantrums. In to something else.

Inspector Morse: Greeks Bearing Gifts (1991)
Season 5, Episode 4

Mistreatment of child on set
26 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I give this episode only one star because of a disturbing scene involving a young child. The plot includes a 6-month old child who has been kidnapped. A woman is holding the child hostage and is engaged in a hostile yelling match with her husband. She's holding the child in her arms and shouting right by the child's ear. It's clear the child is getting increasingly upset. The woman also jerks the child's body. We tried to rationalize (for ex., maybe the actors were miming and then we're later dubbed; but clearly that was not the case).

Engaging
21 September 2021
The plots are fun (although this isn't a comedy, but often amusing). We like the references to literature, music and art that are dropped often- you don't have to be familiar with these to enjoy the show; we often pause the show to google unfamiliar ones, and especially distinct regional collo·lquialisms! We started watching Inspector Lewis first then decided we had to get the back story on Morse, so we started at the beginning. It really is an enjoyable program.
