Jersey Girl (2004)
A dissapointing step in Smith's film career.
Now let's not kid ourselves...Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back isn't a stellar movie...nor is Mallrats, or even Dogma. I however, have taken the good and the bad in Smith's career and have always had a positive outlook on it all. Even in his most critically dissapointing movie (Mallrats) there is still fantastically written scenes, monologues, crisp smart dialouge, and a funny sarcastic look at Pop culture. It's this, and funny performances from many talented actors that make his movies so damned enjoyable. Smith's 6th film however, Jersey Girl, lacks in many departments. No, the fact that Jay and Bob are gone doesn't hinder the movie, it's the lack of any sign of originality, its tired plot, and lack of any creative writing of any kind. Jersey Girl tells the tale of a widower (Affleck) who has his hands full taking care of his 7 year old daughter and his dissaproving father (Carlin) who he lives with. THe movie is tearfully predictable from start to finish. Now that's not to say the movie had nothing good with it at all. It was a very goodlooking, clean film, a step up from Clerks' cinephotography for sure. Smith's directing (lack of directing as he would call it) is the same as always, and is also a strong part of the movie. The movie just lacks in creativity and originality. Has anyone here seen The Family Man? Take the last 40 minutes of that movie and you have Jersey Girl. Smith fails to give us something we haven't seen before. The whole movie falls violently into a world of cliche, and it stays that way throughout the entire movie. The daughter, the father, and even the cute girl he meets at the video store, are the same tired characters used over and over again. And lets face it...Affleck? Biggs? Affleck just doesn't do anything for me, and Biggs is really just kind of annoying, and lets face it...to skinny to look normal. Carlin's "fatherly" antics bored me 5 minutes into the movie, and if I had to hear him say one more out of place swear word to his son or granddaughter I was gonna kick myself. The kid is cute, however.
The movie is just dissapointing as a whole. I'm glad that Smith decided to step out of his world of Jay and Bob, cursing, and video hockey, but just because you're not making a movie about kids in a mall, doesn't mean you have to make a stereotypical piece of Hollywood fluff. The movie's lack of originality, spark, and creativity was more dissapointing than Reindeer Games (sorry, let's not go that far...).
Donnie Darko (2001)
A dark, twisted, and brilliant film.
Donnie Darko is a really cool movie that I don't think nearly enough people have seen. When I asked people in school if they've seen it they look at me like I'm retarded. This makes me want to slap them. The movie is so messed up, and so bizzarre, that to me it became an instant classic. I mean, it's about a kid who gets messages from a guy in a big bunny suit. What can go wrong with that? Also, Jake Gyllenhaal (who played Homer Hickam in October Sky, another good movie) did a great job playing a totally messed up teen with visions (especially when he talks about Married with Children). See this movie immediatly, or I'll hit you in the face.
Double Take (2001)
I wanted to vomit from this horrid horrid movie.
Hi, I saw Double Take. It was complete and utter garbage. I was so sick to my stomach and was mad that i wasted money on it. It was completely stupid with an impossible plot to follow, and the only parts that were funny had been extremely over used in the commercials. I dont want a yardburger, cult 45, or to ever see that that godless sick twisted movie ever agian.
Shaft (2000)
One of the worst, most over-rated movies I've ever seen.
When i first saw commercials for Shaft I thought it looked great. But when I saw it i was sorely mistaken. It made me sick to my stomach that people watched it and actually enjoyed it. I saw no attraction whatsoever. Characters you didnt care about, a stupid plot that has been done over and over and over and over. And even Samuel L. Jackson (who is a personal favorite of mine) sucked in it. Spouting off cheesy catch phrases in an attempt to sound like "the man". Well, Shaft is not the man, and shame on anyone who thought he was.
American Pie 2 (2001)
American Pie 2; Better than the first
I thought American Pie 2 was not only one of the greatest sequals ever made, but one of the funniest movies i had seen in a very long time. It was VERY VERY FUNNY! I thought it was very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very good how everyone came back to do the sequal. Even the milf guys showed up again. SEE THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW!
