Waves (2019)
Starts out as a 4 to 5 star movie, then halfway through loses steam
I have never seen a movie go from a great movie and half way though lose steam. The first half of the movie is riveting, the music, the acting, everything. Then the lead character ends up in jail and then the movie becomes boring.
I truly think Kelvin Harrison Jr. has what it takes to be a huge star, he is handsome and most importantly he is a fantastic actor.
All of the other acting is top notch, except Lukas Hedges who is the only name i knew before watching this film. Taylor Russell is drop dead gorgeous and from a wealthy family, so it was surprising that she would end up with such a homely guy. He just brought the movie down to a screeching halt for me.
Dylda (2019)
Masterpiece
This movie about two friends is the best movie i've seen in several years. The movie is about two women who try to put their lives back together after WW2. The acting is incredible, and the director could not have been better. There is no way an American could make such a brilliant movie.
Yes, it was dark, but, so is war. So tired of all the accolades American movies, I mean Tom Hanks and his war movies can not compare to what this movie does to the viewer.
I am so excited to see it making so many Best of lists for 2020. The Oscars didnt even nominate this movie last year for best foreign language movie.
You should really see this movie if you want to see a realistic portrayal of what women endure in war. Conversely, if you need to see Jennifer Lawrence in a movie with her love interests or to see Tom Hanks sappy acting, then you will hate this movie.
Al-murashahat al-muthalia (2019)
Cute movie about the new norms in KSA
The plot is about a doctor who simply wants to have the main road to her clinic paved, in order to do so she runs for a local political office. Of course this being the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, historically women are not to be seen nor heard. Recnetly, a multitude of changes have come to the kingdom all due to one man, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Rather surprisingly, the movie starts out with the main character, Dr. Maryam Alsafa, driving her car on her own! Women driving alone in a car was unheard of until very recently, so for the director showing a female driving without any controversy speaks volumes. The main character played by Mila Al Zahrani is very comfortable behind the camera and the camera loves her.
This is a really positive movie that illustrates how quickly Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has brought his kingdom into the 21st century. I cant help but see the parallels between the characters father, and the Crown Prince.
Its nice to see the strides made in the treatment of women, also in the way musicians are being given places in the open to perform music.
Of course the kingdom has a way to go in its treatment of non Muslims, immigrants, and animal rights, and the director shows that Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has done so much in such a short time already, and the future is boundless for his kingdom.
