A Bug's Life (1998)
One of the movies that made Pixar Pixar...
1998's A Bug's Life is Pixar's first movie after Toy Story.
Our protagonist is a young ant "searching for himself", trying to gain a place in society with his curious personality. Of course, in this process, he experiences disappointments like everyone else and struggles with the negative comments of the environment.
Throughout the movie, we experience mostly funny, sometimes emotional moments through his eyes.
It's a very high quality movie with a meaningful, realistic scenario and a beautiful message about life. One of Pixar's hidden treasures...
Note: At the end of an animated movie, adding "behind the scenes funny moments" was also brilliant and funny :D.
Sully (2016)
One of the best biopics of the year
Sully, the pilot who landed the passenger plane in the river after both engines stalled in mid-air due to a flock of birds, was saved along with all the passengers.
Even though, until this incident, there had never been a water landing in history that ended without a fatality.
While everyone saw him as a hero;
the investigating authorities claim that according to the available data, the plane could have returned to the runway and landed, and that the pilot endangered everyone's lives by landing in the river.
Yesterday he was hailed as a hero, today he is facing the loss of his 40-year career...
A very good biographical movie about this incident in 2009 and the investigation that followed.
Dune (2021)
Remarkable Sci-fi of the recent times...
A visual feast...
Set in 10191, in a utopian universe where each dynasty owns a planet, the story unfolds against the backdrop of political conflict between the empire and the great dynasties.
The first movie lays the foundations for this beautiful fiction, introduces the universe. It's a very meaningful and qualified introduction to the series. It opens up great potential for the next movies.
I can say that a series of Star Wars, LOTR quality is coming.
Footnote: You should definitely take a look at Lesley Blanch's The Sabres of Paradise (Imam Shamyl's biography). Frank Herbert was heavily influenced by this book when he wrote Dune.
BlackBerry (2023)
The story of history's first smartphone...
The movie tells the story of the emergence, incredible rise and historic collapse of the BlackBerry brand. I'm not exaggerating when I say incredible rise and historic collapse; in its heyday, the company controlled 45% of the cell phone market, but today that figure is 0%.
I enjoyed watching the company's clever marketing strategies, the "wars" they fought with economically powerful competitors, and how they pushed the boundaries of technology and laid the foundations of today's smartphone world. It is hard not to be surprised that this movie is so overshadowed.
One of the seminal and beautiful films of this year...
Footnote: Mike Lazaridis, the founder of BlackBerry, is a Black Sea(Türkiye) Greek. He was born in Istanbul and lived in Istanbul until he was 6 years old, then immigrated to Canada with his family.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
The Documentary of 2022
One of the most solid documentaries of recent times 💯
----------------------------------------------------------
Political commentator Matt Walsh asks the question "What is a woman?" to a wide range of people; from a tribe in Africa to psychiatrists, doctors and academics in America.
It was interesting to see that experts with academic careers in this field could not even answer such a basic question.
The world is going through a period when scientific facts are sacrificed to ideologies; when the truth is afraid to be told in order to please certain lobbies.
A movie that all parents should watch...
Gattaca (1997)
Dreams and genetics...
I can say that it is one of the best movies on genetics. Maybe I'm a little bit exaggerating but it's okay :D
----------------------------------------------------------
In a world where the heel blood of a baby can tell what diseases the baby is likely to have and even its life expectancy in 10 minutes, a new discrimination has emerged:
"Genetic discrimination".
The most important part of your CV - or even the only important part - is your DNA sequence, which is determined the moment you are born.
----------------------------------------------------------
The story of a man who fights this world order for his dreams...
A Million Miles Away (2023)
Inspiring true story...
The inspiring true life story of Jose Hernandez, a Mexican immigrant who set his eyes and heart on the sky from the time he was a child...
There is a lot to say about the movie but;
When Jose asked his father "You say you're tired but you don't show your tiredness, how do you do that?". His father's advice to him, sums up the whole movie in the best way:
1. Set your goal
2. Know how far away you are
3. Draw a roadmap
4. If you don't know how, learn it
5. (And most importantly) the moment you say
"I finally did it!", you may have to try even harder.
One of the best biopics of 2023 and the motivation you're looking for ;)
