It's Ghostbusters
22 March 2024
This isn't getting great reviews and I fail to see why. Probably because it's not serious enough for movie critics these days.

Listen, this is entertainment, when I go to the cinema I want to escape real life and be entertained and you will be entertained. The new cast are doing great and the old cast look like they're having a blast joining in.

There is nostalgia with a few old faces turning up and I loved that. I introduced my young 8 & 9 daughters to the original Ghostbusters last year and they love it. We watched afterlife and they really enjoyed that so naturally we went to see this and we all enjoyed.

Cobra Kai: Head of the Snake (2022)
Season 5, Episode 10
10/10
This is entertainment.
7 October 2023
Finally after probably most of the world, I've now binged watched all of Cobra Kai and what a ride it's been.

It's been absolutely superb from start to finish, there is action, drama, comedy, romance, nostalgia and a bit of cheese thrown in and the recipe is perfect.

If you loved the films you will love this even more, even if you didn't watch the films this is just so well written. Its been leading up to a great finale and the fight scenes were top notch but even more is the chemistry with the characters, I love Chozen, he's had some cracking one liners, Daniel turns to him a few times to help calm a situation down and he comes out with a hilarious one liner that throws gas on the fire.

Cannot wait for the 6th season. One of the best series I've seen in years. This is what entertainment is about, it's not complex, it's a bit over the top and unrealistic, but that's what makes it so great, the whole package, it's simple easy viewing and makes you feel good.

Cobra Kai (2018–2025)
9/10
One of the best TV series in recent years.
28 August 2023
I'm a little late to the party. I watched Karate Kid originally when it came out in the mid 80s when I was a kid myself.

I heard of this series and the praise it has gotten but it's taken me several years to watch it. I've just completed season 2 and wow, this series is excellent.

It has the original cast in it. The balance is brilliant for easy viewing and great story telling. The writing is very sharp and there are some really funny bits as well as some touching. Scenes. It pays homage to the past and at times you feel a warm glow from all the nostalgia.

Cobra Kai is reborn with Mr Laurence trying to get his life together. Daniel Larusso is a successful business man and their rivalry is reignited. The truth is both the main characters have matured and at times you think they're becoming friends then something happens to ends that. Daniel Larruso can come across as the one with the problem who won't let go of the past.

I can't wait to catch up with the rest of the seasons.

If you want something easy to watch that is really entertaining and has something for everyone give it a go.

The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)
8/10
Halle Bailey smashes it.
28 May 2023
The controversy surrounding the casting of this film, mainly the lead role shadowed this film. It shouldn't, Halle Bailey was simply awesome as Aerial. Her voice is majestic and she doesn't put a foot or fin wrong the whole movie.

It's reasonably faithful to the original with a few extra bits. Mellissa McCarthy looks like she was having a blast as Ursula.

The songs are all here and Bailey smashes every one of them.

In some scenes it did feel a little washed out on the colours and lacking contrast.

My two daughter loved it. The little Mermaid was my wife's favourite Disney film growing up and she really enjoyed it as did I.

Matilda: The Musical (II) (2022)
9/10
Superb
27 November 2022
My children are currently rehearsing for this musical with their theatre group so we were looking forward to this.

The songs are all there and brilliantly performed. The staging and filming is so stunning to watch. Emma Thompson plays a good Miss Trunchabull. We all know the story of Matilda so I won't go into that but this is a film for the whole family to enjoy. Don't wait for it to stream on Netflix, this film really benefits from a big screen and awesome sound stage.

I would happily watch this film again, it was an excellent feel good film. The cast were perfect in each of the roles and choreography was brilliant.

Scream (I) (2022)
3/10
Completely pointless.
31 October 2022
If you have seen the original Scream then you have already seen this Scream.

It's pretty much a carbon copy of the original movie, especially the end. The ending is identical for 99% of the time compared to the first movie. Very lazy writing.

Wes Craven would not have approved in my opinion. This film lacks his touch.

Apparently they have approved and given the go ahead for a Scream 6, the franchise whilst not the strongest after the original is going to be milked.

The original cast are here for slightly more than just a cameo, but the plot is so weak for them being there. Only watch if you literally cannot find anything else to watch and leave you brain in the cupboard.

Dunkirk (2017)
2/10
Poor.
5 August 2022
The film starts and you sense you're going to witness an epic. Very quickly you realise you're just going through the hoops.

We never really get to know any characters so as a result I don't care about any of them, there is no emotional connection with anyone.

As a professional pilot myself I cannot forget the absolute ridiculous ending. Last time I checked, aircraft when they run out of fuel and the engine fails are unable to continue to dog fight from low level and then continue to fly for some 20 minutes. Hollywood nonsense.

Poor film.

One of the best sequels of all time.
28 June 2022
Let's say this from the start, the plot isn't ground breaking, however what it does, it does perfectly.

We join Maverick who is now a test pilot, who still lives on the edge but is still trying to come to terms with Gooses death.

Maverick is recalled to Top Gun to train a bunch of graduates for a lethal mission, one of which is Gooses sim Rooster, who Maverick has tried to be a father figure to but they have had a falling out.

The film is emotional, entertaining beyond belief and the aerial footage is spectacular and really gets the adrenaline going. Characters are good and seeing where Maverick is in life is also great.

The movie pays homage to the original and it does it extremely well and is handled brilliantly.

I won't give spoilers away, but this film is better than the original, I had goose (pardon the pun) bumps during the opening scene.

I've seen the film twice now, first time within its first week in 4DX which was excellent and it was brilliant to see the cinema was sold out on every screening and in different locations and this was great to see as the atmosphere in the cinema was electric. This was a film that the world and Hollywood really needed, it lift spirits, was superbly entertaining, paid homage to the past and had some really emotional touching scenes.

Go see it.

Talk to me Goose.

After Life (2019– )

Laugh out loud then cry your eyes out.
26 January 2022
Wow, simply wow. I've never been a huge fan of Ricky Gervais in the past. My wife and I were looking for a new series and caught the trailer of this on Netflix last week. We decided to give it a go. Several days later we had binged watched all the 3 series.

What can I say, the writing and directing from Gervais is second to none, the quality is incredibly high and it's consistent throughout all 3 series, there is not a single bad episode.

It tells the story of a chap named Tony and loses his wife to cancer. He feels he has nothing to live for and wanting to end it, gradually his friends show him that he is loved and Tony tries to find his way through life and without the love of his life. I won't go into details.

There are literally many laugh out loud moments and I haven't come across that in many years where I have not been able to contain myself. Both my wife and I would have tears from the laughter and in a blink of an eye, they would turn to tears of sadness before then being tears of laughter.

This is incredibly well written and extremely funny in the right parts, but it is also a very powerful emotional drama that I defy anyone to try not to feel emotional.

It's a fascinating insight into Tony's world and the love of someone that not everyone finds and how to cope with the tragic loss.

If you're a fan of Gervais this is probably his best work he has ever done and even if you're not a fan you will love this.

Best series I have seen in at least 10yrs. Brilliant.

Touching and the reality of life
15 January 2022
Never heard of this film but it's come on tv tonight. A story of a family who are very much in love. The eldest son had cancer and is in remission when the mum also is struck down with an incurable cancer. She leave behind a list for her husband and wishes for him and their two sons. This is based on a true story and can hit hard how life can be cruel.

I have a loving wife and we have two young children together, they're my everything and the thought of this happening to one of us made it so hard to watch.

People who go through these battles are incredibly brave, it must be so hard. This is brilliantly acted, but can be hard to watch, especially if you're a family and the thought this could happen to you.

Brilliantly well done.
10 January 2022
This was a tough one, this could have been a disaster but it's not.

I loved the original Ghostbusters and was really looking forward to this ever since the first trailer dropped and seeing Ecto-1 along with Bill Murray's voice over.

Egon's family particularly his granddaughter move into the farm house he has left behind. They discover weird goings on and Phoebe starts to discover her grandfathers old relics and realise he was a Ghostbuster.

I won't give any of the plot away, but the characters for me were perfect, the original cast is used perfectly. They could have done a complete film with the original cast but it probably wouldn't have worked well. What has been done was well thought out and the final scenes are fitting to Harold Ramis and emotional.

The film pays perfect homage to the original and adds to the franchise rather than look for a quick cash in. The end was probably a little rushed but doesn't take from the film.

We all loved it and thought it was well done, the original cast did add to the story and were used perfectly and made it feel genuine rather than used for the sake of being used.

Excellent.

Creed (II) (2015)
8/10
Excellent film to build on Rocky.
14 December 2021
Creed is a brilliant idea, a son Apollo had from having an affair wants to make a go of it in the ring. He goes in search of Rocky and convinces him to train him and a great bond is formed.

Michael B Jordan is perfectly cast as Creed and absolutely nailed it.

Stallone is excellent here, probably his finest performance. Rocky has pretty much no family left other than his estranged son and he's clearly feeling vulnerable in life. Stallone plays it so well, a man who has so much wisdom to give but is carrying tremendous pain in what he's lost and failing health.

Stallone in my view has more than paid his dues to the industry and was worthy of an Oscar, but the academy will never give an actor like Sly the recognition he deserved. A fitting standalone film franchise what works so well with franchise it was born from.

Original
27 September 2021
This is one of the most original series in years. It's kind of set in the 80s but they also have modern tech. It's quirky.

The show is funny, interesting and incredibly well written. There is not a single bad character and the cast is spot on in every way.

Excellent series. Glad a 4th season has been commissioned.

Would never be allowed today.
30 May 2021
This series was epic, took a hilarious look and an average family and exaggerated that sort of life. Excellent script and perfectly cast.

In this day and age of everyone being offended by anything, this show would never see the light of day today. There is nothing offensive in it at all but people these days would find the fact that Peggy is a housewife and not a CEO of a massive company as offensive.

Lovely family movie with some laugh out moments. Excellent cast and the script is superb. It's take on modern life is spot on and made me laugh out loud quite a few times. My kids who are aged 5 and 7 loved it as well as my wife and I. Don't miss it, one of the best family films we have seen for sometime.

What the hell happened.
19 April 2021
This series was excellent. Since the new show runner took over it's gone down the toilet, with plenty nothing episodes. Just one more series to go before it's put out of its misery.

Awful.

I've seen wood act better.
11 April 2021
My wife loved this movie as a kid and our daughters also like it. I find it rather cringeworthy, the acting especially for the first half of the movie is so stiff that you could have just got planks of wood to star. The story is pretty naff as well.

Her new partner dies near the end and it take her around 2 minutes to get over his death and fall back in love again with her ex husband, What's a load of rubbish.
