Discovering Film (2014– )
Oscar Wild played by Peter Finch was British, Really?
27 March 2024
I like this show but this is not the first time I've noted the insistence that all positive characteristics or talents are "the best of British", any fool would know Oscar Wilde was Irish. That was not an oversight just another f up unfortunately. Tiring also is the highs and how wonderful every actor is, then there's a hiccup then a graceful retirement. Why not call some actors out for what they were. Some were on hard drugs, ditched their families, promiscuous, jail time its rarely discussed etc Everything is narratee as pompously as possible and every narrator agrees with each other, its beyond scripted.

I must see this movie again to decide...on what on i don't know!

Is it good? Is it bad? I honestly don't know I gave up trying to decide if i cared enough or not midway through however i can say its tremendously well made. We all recollect memories differently and this is an ode to that notion in its wirey plot that almost irritated me at time in the medley though i sat back and enjoyed the beauty of the film making: angles, cameras, lights, setting, wardrobe, feelings demonstrated so well and thought well this is all fab 10/10

The Apartment (1996)
Confused but enlightened

Passionate stupidity galore, some say romance I say insane lust, however its intriguing lust and insanity that kept me watching and guessing. Nothing is as it seems and rarely in life are we handed the ending we expect.

The best of all 3

Warning: Spoilers
Some say blue, others say white this one sits with me the most though. Intricate and correctly the plot winds at a nice pace.

La viaccia (1961)
Beautifully made

Fantastic snippet in time of a city, family, life, expectations, regrets and all the usual. Claudia Cardinale is stunning in it she plays a harsh scarlet o'hara 'type', the family chasing money and power, all relevant themes today. The backdrop of Florence though...wow!

A little too realistic

There were parts near the end that were so in keeping with pagan-celtic traditions I laughed so much, no longer scary this movie now has been done so many times from midsomner to a million others, that said, its a fun watch and memorably scary.

Toni Erdmann (2016)
Just watch it!

Forget any poor reviews of this film, its excellent. The acting, the plot, the humour the occassional serious messages within the humour. Meant in jest fully in earnest rings through on this film, yes its funny but it's only touching and moving. Exploring do we work so hard in faux friendships, work situations to end up crying into our refrigerators, bleeding in presentations and generally becoming the jerks our parents never wanted us to be, but society demands and agrees with.

In a final scene the neighbour saying how wonderful Toni's daughters life is, i laughed. I have been that woman and at time my crazy father I wish was crazy funny like Toni not merely crazy.

Give it a whirl, it could be watched over 2 nights if times an issue but we enjoyed every second.

Tonis whiley fox smile under the wig is fantastic, his daughters impressions of him hilarious.

Poor Cow (1967)
Excellent

This seems to me 'educating rita' in reality tv style. Bleak settings and back drop are tempered by the main actress' rose tinted glasses and duplicity. Terence stamp is remarkably gorgeous in the film. The 1960's were something i missed, I had heard he was beautiful ...now i know!! The relationship between mother and son coincides with all other relationships at times as a mother her indifference to her son is visible and other times he is her only compass in life. Sadly the films a feminists nightmare as she flits from man to man,job to job, situation to situation like a puppet on a wire controlled by men and society at large I dug deep for her character, ugly as it was at times, it was completely understandable.
