Eragon (2006)
I liked it . . .
Before you read my review, a few caveats: 1) I had never heard of the movie or the book before walking into the theater. In fact I just heard of the book by reading the other comments here 2) I'm not particularly a fan of fantasy/sci-fi movies. Like this movie, I generally just go along with the group who wants to see them.
That said, I had no expectations for this movie. When I saw that the theater previews before the movie were for kid's movies, I knew not to expect much. But when the movie came on I found a satisfactory amount of concern with the characters and interest in outcome. I was entertained. Not blown away . . . but entertained. Believe me, I've seen much worse.
The worst thing I can say is that it left me with a lot of questions about the background of the characters . . . but that was explained away by the OBVIOUS hint that there will be a sequel.
Maybe I'll check out the book. It seems like a good story I'd want to know more about.
By the way, the two friends I saw the movie with, being fantasy movie fans, hated it. . . .
Finding Neverland (2004)
It was OK, not great, just OK
I can't say I hated this film, but it didn't touch me with awe and wonder like many people have stated. Although I found the story interesting, and parts that were very touching, I found the film as a whole lacking. For those who like cinematography, it was beautiful. For those who like great acting, everyone in this film was excellent (especially the kids). But there wasn't enough depth to the characters that makes one really care about what happens to them and why they do the things they do. I just didn't care. Someone else said that at the end of the film there was silence . . . in my theater there was a sigh of relief that it was over.
Overall 5 out of 10 stars.
Hangmen (1987)
I've been Bamboozled!! Hoodwinked!!
I broke my own rule buying this movie from the $5.88 bin at Walmart. Basically, if a movie has a big star in it, and you've never heard of it before, it's usually for a reason. Well in the case of this movie, the reason is because it SUCKED! They plaster Sandra Bullock's photo and name all over the cover of the DVD as bait, and it reeled this little fishie right on in. I was thinking of donating the disc to charity, or giving it to the library, but I don't think I would want to subject anyone else in the world to this movie. Worst lines: "What do you mean army buddies?" "What do you mean your dad?"
White Oleander (2002)
wish I had read the book AFTER I saw the movie
Excellent book, but as usual, the reading of the book made me hate the movie. I try and try to see a movie as its own entity, knowing that it's virtually impossible to really grasp the soul of a novel on screen (one exception: Stephen King's "Misery") However, this one was especially over-simplified and disjointed. I could see what the director was trying to do with the flashbacks and nightmare sequences, but I found myself explaining the story to my friend who hadn't read the book. I would rank this movies as a good advertisement for the book, but not a good movie in it's own right.
Blacula (1972)
Not as scary as I remembered
I saw Blacula in the theatre when I was 5 or 6 years old. It scared the bejeesus out of me!!! I had nightmares for weeks, and my mother was very angry at my cousins for taking me to see it. I wasn't allowed to watch a horror flick again until I was old enough to go on my own and buy my own ticket (and even then I stayed away for a while. . . the next one I saw was Nightmare on Elm Street when I was in highschool!!!).
Anyway, I saw the movie for the second time two nights ago, 29 years later.. . and it was not as scary as I remembered. However, I can see how my young mind was terrified at the time. AND, I can see how my teenaged cousins loved it so much. In 1972, this movie was at the early end of the blaxploitation era, and besides the fact that the main character was a bloodsucker, the characters were generally positive (i.e. no pimpin' drug-dealin' gangstas) You'll be hard pressed to find another early seventies black movie that can say that!
I think, for the time, it was a pretty good low budget horror movie. They deserve their own category, you know.
Masquerade (2000)
Cute and very well done!
Where else can you see Nina from 3rd Rock starring in a movie with Scooter from Living Single? On BET, of course. At first when I came across this movie as I was channel surfing along I thought it was simply a Black version of "You've Got Mail." But the similarities ended after the online introduction. Even though I had work to do, I was hooked. I'm not going to sit and tell you what it was all about, but it was a great romantic "chick flick" kind of movie, with a believable storyline, an attractive cast, and some tension which leaves you guessing until the very end.
Kudos to BET for FINALLY entertaining me.
