Nefarious (2023)
NEFARIOUS resonates, outstanding Oscar worthy performance by Sean Patrick Flanery
NEFARIOUS is an intense & impactful psychological thriller, it makes you think about the struggle between good & evil. A movie with a solid captivating storytelling. How 2 people sitting at a table talking can glue you so much to the screen is superb.
Sean's switching between this tortured soul Edward & the vicious demon Nefarious, changing manner & voice is masterful!
I've never felt so truly sorry for a movie character (which is a serial killer!) in a long time. I'll never be able to eat Cheeseburger the same way again.
The chemistry between Flanery and Jordan Belfi, their back and forth, their cat-and-mouse game was amazing. The change of the psychiatrist from being an atheist to doubt, to "I don't know" is so believable & convincing.
The writers/directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon did an amazing job in writing such a phenomenal screenplay. It challenges you mentally, you're talking about this movie long after leaving the theater.
I watched this movie 5 times within 2 weeks and definitely will watch again when the DVD gets released.
I didn't want to miss a single line. Highly recommended!
Frank and Penelope (2022)
A genre-bending love story, fun to watch
FRANK & PENELOPE is everything I love about movies.
There's romance, action, thriller, suspense, horror, mystery and above all: a lot of fun to watch.
At its core it's a beautiful love story. Love against all odds.
"A horrific allegorical love story." This is how director Sean Patrick Flanery describes his movie himself.
If you love Tarantino movies or movies like Wild at Heart, True Romance, From Dusk till Dawn, Bonnie & Clyde, Thelma and Louise, then you will enjoy Frank and Penelope too.
The music is very inspiring. Not only the beautiful songs, kudos to Sean Patrick Flanery. But also the composers Rhyan D'Errico (Donna D'Errico's son!) & Jared Forman created a phenomenal captivating score.
The whole cast is fantastic, two leads with a great chemistry: Caylee Cowan and Billy Budinich.
It's Billy's very first movie which is unbelievable. Like he's in the business for years.
Caylee is the perfect embodiment of Penelope. Penelope is a stripper who uses her sexuality to get what she wants because she has learned nothing else. But she's strong and smart and finally able to find true love.
Donna D'Errico is so amazing as Mabel. If you know her from Baywatch you'll hardly recognize her.
Johnathon Schaech has that terrifying charisma, perfect for his role as villain. Kevin Dillon's role is small but he's so cool.
It was Sean Patrick Flanery's feature film directorial debut. He also wrote the script after the original story by John Thaddeus.
I hope to see more movies from Sean in the future.
I was coming out of the cinema with a huge smile. A movie even more fun to rewatch for all the details.
And I just love the end credits with these personal notes from Sean.
Born a Champion (2021)
Inspiring & authentic martial arts/family movie with a lot of heart
I always adored Sean Patrick Flanery's great ability of GOOD storytelling & to be able to touch people's hearts.
BORN A CHAMPION is Sean's love letter to Jiu Jitsu, he shows the heart & honesty of being a martial artist: "We never start a fight, we just finish them."
Even if you're not in martial arts you will love & enjoy this movie because it's about everything that is important in life.
Love, family, fatherhood, faith, legacy, integrity, confidence, drive & commitment.
There are so many things you can empathize. Such a deep true love or that wonderful friendship with Taco. What it means being a father.
You can feel the passion Sean put in this project as a person and as a martial artist.
Solid and amazing performances that don't feel like acting. Because it's something that comes from Sean's heart & soul, it felt so real.
It's the first movie Sean Patrick Flanery stars in where he wrote the story/screenplay & executive produced it.
It's inspiring, moving, I'm going through all the emotions with Mickey Kelley.
He made me smile and he made me cry. More than once.
Sean is a legit 3rd degree bjj black belt himself, he owns an academy where he trains & teaches kids & adults.
So everything you see in this movie is real, he hired elite martial artists and was the stunt coordinator too.
The fight scenes are violent & you're rooting for Mickey.
BORN A CHAMPION shows how to deal with adversity, it's a beautiful love story, there are heartwarming scenes with his own kids. (Watch the end credits!!!!)
I love the structure of this movie, how it is built from the beginning to the end. (no spoilers)
I love BORN A CHAMPION wholeheartedly, I haven't seen a movie in a very long time that touched me that much and made me think about a lot, to learn from.
Because we all need perspective, motivation, especially now, we have to face adversity, to speak with Sean's words: "No one becomes great without adversity."
If you want to read more from Sean, check out his book Jane Two and his blog Shine Until Tomorrow. You will recognize some quotes from this movie. Sean is a huge source of inspiration and motivation.
So I highly recommend watching. A movie you can watch multiple times.
