Misha and the Wolves (2021)
They should have put more stress on these important points...
Misha's story was something she shared only with close family and friends. She never attempted to venture beyond that until continually urged to share it at temple. Then she would have likely never published her story except at the continued urging of Jane. Jane later tries to justify her financial misdealings by going on a journey to prove the story false, something she didn't seem to care to much about until it suited her new purpose. If there is a villain in this story, it is Jane. I can understand why the settlement was reduced, that often happens with financial verdicts delivered by juries. But I was happy that it was not entirely ser aside.
The Mosquito Coast (2021)
Not The Mosquito Coast
This is not close to the book at all, but could be forgiven if written better. The characters make no sense. Why after ten years of hiding successfully would the mother call her parents from a pay phone in the city they live just outside of? If she is that clueless how did they hide for that long? Did she really think the NSA/FBI would stop monitoring her parents phones? The cell phone the daughter was hiding and using was actually safer since her name had been changed and she only used it to call/text her boyfriend. The parents explain nothing to their now teenage kids and yet expect them to do exactly as they say. Were they never teenagers themselves? Have they never know any other teenagers? Also, when they were on Lucrecia's compound, why did she not just keep them all confined and guarded until she figured out what she wanted to do? The only reason for her to send their son off with her nephew was to create a plot device to allow the family to escape. It made no sense and felt too contrived. I doubt a real "Lucrecia" would be that dumb in real life. The hitman in Mexico City is an overdone stereotype played by an English actor. Really? In real life he would be Mexican or Columbian, especially if he wanted the cooperation of all those children (some of them are also killers themselves), and I believe that family would already be dead. If they were, it would have saved me from watching the last episode which ended nowhere. Season two will not be on my list.
Godfather of Harlem (2019)
Intersting series, timely topics, but not true
The stories are certainly timely and the "morals" of the stories are spot on. However, I am always disappointed when writers/creators take creative liberties in telling the stories of real people that make them look more corrupt than they actually were, Rev. Powell in particular. I know it may not be a popular view these days, but these people are all still alive and aware of what you saying about them. Even if your motives are more noble than ratings and/or money, you will have to reconcile with these people eventually. Put yourself in their shoes when you create these stories and treat everyone with respect.
Woke (2020)
Puts off the intended audience, I think?
If this show was created for those already "woke" then fine. If it was created with the intent of invoking deeper "woke" thought by people not of color and/or not of a minority, then it seriously misses. It is too heavy handed and I think will only serve to deepen the "woke" divide. I think the reviews to-date prove that. This is not what need right now!
