Bumblebee (2018)
Could have been so good
I didn't expect much so I wasn't disappointed. But this movie could have been much better!
The cinematography perfectly matched the story's teenage Californian summer vibe, as did the 80s soundtrack.
But when it came to character development there was none. The dynamic between Charlie and her family is predictable and one dimensional. The plot was thin and unimpressive and didn't create any sense of tensive or mystery.
Most disappointing was the dialogue which was cringe worthy because it was so cliche and unimaginative.
If only they writers spent more time developing the characters and plot this would have been good. But the first Transformers is still the best of the franchise.
After the Ball (2015)
Light-hearted fun
Just like its name, After The Ball is a modern twist on the Cinderella story with a bit more substance thrown in.
The supporting cast (especially Maurice!) and a well paced storyline makes this a delight to watch.
Though the story is predictable, there was enough heart in it to make you want to follow Kate's journey. There is more to the plot than just romantic attraction but has elements of father/daughter relstionships, greed/deceit and mateship.
You'll detect elements of Devil Wears Prada and She's The Man so if that's your kind of movie give this a go.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
Like flat soda
I didn't expect any depth from this teen-targeted movie but hoped for entertainment at least. But sadly the lack lustre acting, uninspired script and non-existant characterisation made this unbearable to watch.
The main character's Asian wardrobe showed more personality than the character herself. Besides the remarks from the other supporting characters about her being "smart" and "shy" there's nothing that reveals personality to the audience. And why did they pick 2 male leads who looked so similar?
The storyline was so flat throughout the entire movie that watching the predictable unfolding of events was laborious.
Instead of being a fun fizzy teen romantic comedy, this movie failed to deliver on both likeable characters and entertaining storyline. It's like a bottle of soda gone flat.
