Wild Wild West didn't get it
28 November 2011
This one did, and I am picky. Could have been better, but it sure could have been far worse. I enjoyed the variety of characters a lot, Ford finally shows he's still got it. Craig is cool as the lone ranger with a broken heart. And I laughed. I do not laugh easily. Don't even get me started on the Hangover.

The aliens, well, at least their motivation is explained! That alone puts this well above many others that touch sci-fi. Western and sci-fi do not mix, Wild Wild West made that painfully clear. Cowboys and aliens is actually a pretty serious movie. These two facts did not AT ALL motivate me to see it. Quite the contrary actually. But you know what? It worked for me. Sharon Stone described it quite well: Suspension of disbelief. Take it for what it is and enjoy the ride, I did :-)

Quite boring.
13 July 2011
OK, I've not seen part 4, 5 and 6. I've seen the first three and now, almost, the last one. I know the backgrounds, but that doesn't change the fact that this movie was boring. The first 15 minutes and the last couple of scenes were good. The rest was an accumulation of nice forest shots and teenage bickering which once again confirms this is not an adult universe.

It's a bit heavier than the early years, but remains a kids story. If the world is coming to an end, I didn't feel it. I fail to see the hype, even now it's almost over. It's too nice to ever get dark and far from the brilliance it is credited with. A Sunday afternoon movie at best.

Unexpected fun
7 December 2009
I expected Jackass stuff only, but this was actually very funny, with a flimsy, yet nice story at the same time. Cool, gross, politically incorrect pranks and challenges and some good one-liners from everyone make this a fun ride. The acting, little tidbits, nudges to other cult icons and movies, are much better than you might think. Made on a smaller budget, it doesn't even matter.

Above expectation, and a well deserved 7 for the rough, yet warm feeling throughout. And lots of people, little or large, falling and capering. Mascottes alone getting swept off their feet was enough already to watch this :-) People might find it gross, but those who find it offending obviously missed the point. Every race, color or personal problem is attended to. A fun ride with a cold one nearby.

Great movie and a lot of laughs
11 July 2008
When I saw the rating, I thought: Can't be that funny. Well, it is.

Sure! It's juvenile, but they know. And so should you. But rarely does one see even pooh and pee jokes go hand in hand with two of these lovely characters. Good writing, good jokes, facial expressions, the works. The editing is a little rough here and there, but I can imagine a lot of the actors couldn't finish their lines because of the fun they must have had making this.

Watch for Rob Corddry, who is perfectly cast, his sidekick, and a shining Neil Patrick Harris. There's also lots of small winks to the first movie for the fans. And remember, a movie isn't over before it's over ;-)

The Tomb (2007 Video)

Ouch, it hurts...
11 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
True, it wasn't as bad as Battlefield Earth... how about that! Well, that's about it. At least that one was ridiculous.

A man and a woman find themselves trapped by someone bearing a remarkable similarity to Jigsaw from the Saw series. My compliments if you are able to get any closer to the story than that. Tomb makes Saw look like definite Oscar material.

The decors and props are laughable, there is no line at all to be seen. Let alone be heard, because the sound is horrible. I guess the terrible editing actually spared us Tomb taking over ninety minutes. The only reasonable thing in this serious lack of talent brought together is the lighting, which wasn't even that bad.

Evade at all costs. Watch any other C-horror-movie over this. The director should be made to watch Bad Taste at least 10 times before he should ever be allowed to touch celluloid again.

The Grey Zone (2001)

Impressive
15 August 2003
I had this movie in mind for a long, long time. I knew that it would make an impact, and for that reason I waited and waited, having seen so much footage from the era already. Now, I have seen it, and it once more fully confronts the viewer with the Holocaust.

The scenes inside the crematoria's and gaschambers are...well...convincing. What can one say. Some scenes and sounds were plain nervewrecking and they should be. The hate one feels against those who murdered all those people and the sadness over all those dead cannot be escaped by the audience.

This movie doesn't simply 'deliver', it smashes the Holocaust in the viewers face. It has it's small flaws, but it does the job very well. A good movie with an interesting standpoint from the Sonderkommando.

Never forget. History tends to repeat itself.

Tape (2001)

Very nicely done!
15 May 2003
Watching this, I was thinking: This smells like a play. During the credits I found out it was. I would very much like to see it again, on stage. This movie alone was already superb and intelligent. Food for thought as well. I told a friend of mine to search out the movie Treed Murray. He, in turn, tipped me on Tape. I am grateful he did. Decor is nice, no question about that, but it's astonishing and good to see one does not need miles and miles of decor to take the mind for a great ride. Compliments to the actors.

Unexpected joy
18 April 2003
I went into this one hearing it was a pretty bad movie. It wasn't, I was pleasantly suprised by it. There are ofcourse some flaws and the lead female role deserves a lot more. But Willis and the team are well acted and there is lots of tension and action for warmovie fans, of wich I am one.

I am also one who loves movies where people with a consience take it up for those who are innocently slaughtered without loosing total sight of realism and running the movie off into Rambo-everybody survives-style. This is one such movie.

Unlike maybe Behind Enemy Lines, wich started out great and totally blew at the end, this movie delivers: A storyline wich is credible and there was far more realism than I had foreseen. Sure, some people will never learn to aim, but that could be called realism also ;).

Action in a confined space is somewhat fun
2 September 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I like action movies in a closed space, like trains, boats, planes etc...if you like that, you might enjoy this. Certainly nothing special, hee! it's JC van D. so LOL, just switch your mind off and enjoy the baddies get it.

Jean Claude plays a, yes, what organisation does he work for anyway? Doesn't matter, a woman spy-like burglar steals a deadly virus for a contracter wich also happens to be JC's hirer. His job: get her on a train to safety running from Slovakia to Munich. There are lots of far better stuck-on-a-train movies but it wasn't that bad. Watch out: GIRLFRIEND SPOILER AHEAD ;).

Lots of things don't work, acting is bad and all that, and the thing that really annoyed me is his family coming on board early in the film to celebrate his birthday!! For Pete's sake! The man has a job to do. WHAT are they doing there! Well, this ensures you can watch this with a lady friend, but I think she will also find it just plain anoying.

Further more, lots of baddies very politely wait for JC to take his badass pose to kick their ass. Nobody seems to think about the AK-47 hanging 'round their neck. I know they can't kill the hero, hehe, but at least give hem a shot....or two ;).

Mostly for Jean Claude van Damme fans but not a very bad action movie. Just don't go to the cinema for it.

Action-packed and moving
12 August 2002
An action-packed movie. In the end, both sides are plunged into the abyss and nothing brings back the dead.

Not at all so American 'flagwaving' as other people said, a lot of focus on the individual and pretty realistic. These were American boys so yes, one will see a flag, and it is not in the least annoying but very functional.

Solid war movie with a lot of food for thought.

War is hell.

For the Birds (2000)

Hilarious! :D
2 March 2002
This one should win an Oscar!!! It would be so well deserved!

I love Pixars work, but this...it's just...everything is perfect and the jokes are machinegunned at the audience! GO SEE IT! I laughed so hard it hurt!

The birds on the wire are a good starting point, anybody has seen this scene somewhere...our little feathered friends do what they always do: Sitting on a telephoneline. I'm not even going to tell what happens next! This is fun at it's best fun for all ages!

If anything is picked up by aliens, let it be this. Only such a thing could do justice to the suberb humor in For the Birds LOL.

A scary movie...
17 October 2001
A fine movie with no Hollywood ending. This one goes all the way...

It's not just the movie, it's the thoughts next to it. Imagine this being a reality, it brought back all the chills I had about nuclear war in the eighties.

The romance is not annoying but functional although there was one point: I wonder how many times one can come back to one's perfect love without getting the boot. Apparently a lot of times and a lot of running into each others arms, again and again. At some point I as yelling: What is it going to be !!! Sjeez.

But that's about the only lesser point I could find. The decor is excellent, with deserted cities and scenes of anarchy, chaos and dispair.

Enjoy but be prepared. This is no family movie, this is scary reality. I even dare to say to - with me at least - this movie made a bigger impact then The Day After.

The movie also contains a perculiar shot of a burning skyscraper wich doesn't have a scratch later on in the movie seen from a train station. Watch for it just after the submarine arrives in Melbourne.

Swordfish (2001)

Finally - More realism
7 August 2001
I don't understand why this movie doesn't get a rating of at least 7. It isn't a masterpiece but it deserves more. The start is excellent. What is being said and done in the first 15 minutes, that's what I've been yelling for years. Finally: More realism.

Travolta is great as the bad guy. He needed to make up after the horrific Battlefield Earth, WHAT IN EARTH made him make this? It soooo bad, I'm amazed his career didn't crash a second time. I heard this movie was made under influence of Scientology, well...judging from BE we have nothing to fear from them, LOL.

Travolta's text in the beginning of Swordfish was music to my ears. Far from the usual like for example Ed Harris chickening out at the end of the Rock: "Let's just bring the missile back. I don't really want to blow up a stadium full of people". It completely ruined the movie for me.

Swordfish is an exception as some of the people in the movie actually die, where they always would survive in other movies. The police is having a lot of trouble with Gabriel, Travolta's character, without the police being stupidly portrayed. "Hollywood makes crap, realism, that's what lacks in movies these days. Governments will always give in if you have a lot of hostages and you kill 30 or 40 of them." Travolta's lines in the beginning. He's winking at some of Al Pacino's movies and has a very GOOD point. You'll have a great time. The rest of the movie is pretty basic in the action genre but the beginning and the end are non-Hollywood. Finally...a very nice action movie which takes a whole other track then the usual good guys vs bad guys and American flagwaving and morale bla-bla...Enjoy!

Downers:

  • The main character is in 'the job' for the money to save his daughter from the clutches of his ex-wife. The blackmail that he encounters just isn't convincing at all.

  • Once again there is a Matrix slow-down-time-scene. Boring and not original anymore.
