Matt Rife: Natural Selection (2023)
Cocky with no material
I read about the hype on social medianso I rhought I'd give it a try, but I didn't past long watching it. Criminally unfunny topped with a very cocky attitude of a dude who clearly thinks a lotnof himself. He tries to sell jokes and thoughts that literally every second person on the planet has already thought about, and he does that with an attitude that makes you cringe very hard. Others are questioning if they just had too high expectatuons for this show. No, you didn't. This performance simply isn't it and I wish I could have that half an hour of my life back wasted on it. A pretty face with no original content or depth...or humour for that matter.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
An imaginatory masterpiece
Let me start with that the people who rate this low are probably the ones too simple to comprehend the idea of the multiverse and too slow to follow and understand the plot...although they'll claim it's none of those. This movie packs so much thought and imagination into a good two hours that it'll make your brain fire in all cylinders, and your neurons clap in joy from the impulses hitting them. It's a visual marvel. Beyond that it bares an intriguing storyline with a "nobody" protagonist, who's meaningless life will find meaning in this maze of universes. Besides this it is action packed, at times brutal yet wierdly funny. It is also very refreshing that with the cast it takes a break from the generic hollywood actors/actresses and boasts talented professionals beyond the plastic faces of the industry. A must watch.
The Peripheral (2022)
Lost me by episode 3
Starts with a bang and the plot seems really intriguing. Couple that with Chloe's acting skills and really cool CGI and you should be set up for a good time. Unfortunately the rest of the acting (Katie Leung and Gary Carr especially) is sub-par and at times feels like they would be reading their lines for the first time. Conversations feel forced and fabricated, and the energy runs out by episode 3 (for me at least) as well. Could have been good, as the topic makes for a good sci-fi/action series, and some of the high tech things don't even seem that far fetched anymore thus making things future-realistic.
Break Point (2023)
A good glimpse into the toughness of tennis
Very enjoyable portraits of the new(er) generation who will have very little time winning anything after the big 3 is gone and before Alcaraz and co. Kick in the door. Shows very well how mentally tough tennis is beyond the obvious physical aspects. I cannot understand people (also in the reviews) who dare to question some players who sometimes don't handle the immense pressure 100% correct...but haters gonna hate. One thing that baffled me in the series though is that they dedicated a mere minute to one of the (if not the) biggest comebacks in tennis history in episode 2. Otherwise good insights, suspenseful scenes, great atmosphere.
Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would (2022)
Dated and uninteresting
I used to laugh myself to tears listening to Trevor a couple of years ago so I had great anticipation when I noticed his new title on Netflix. I put it in and to my surprise he opened with two jokes that he used like 10 years ago, and I think everyone who remotely knows him heard at least a dozen times. After that it started to be promising, only to turn into the 1000th comedian to start talking about Covid. I listened to the flat jokes for a while, which we ourselves talked about multiple times during the pandemic...and then I decided that I can use my time better than this and turned it off.
House of the Dragon: The Princess and the Queen (2022)
A drastic and unwelcome change
As if it was a different show to the previous 5 episodes. The new actresses didn't live up to the roles and the characters changed because of that too (while the actors stayed the same). The flow off events drifts towards in-house gossip and the whole story becomes significantly less well written than before. Ohh...and if I have to watch one more childbirth, I will surely abandon the whole thing as is immediately. Overall, the no continuity and character development...quite disappointing to be honest. I really hope that it improves and recovers some of the momentum it gained during the first half of season.
The Future Of (2022)
A documentary that says nothing
I don't actually know how I got through 3 episodes. I should've just left it after the first 20 minutes of pseudo scientific bs, that leads nowhere and explains nothing. It's baffling how something like this gets approved and aired. If you can get paid creating stuff like that, then please hit me up.
