The Exorcists (2023)
6/10
Kid-friendly exorcism adventure.
7 October 2023
Guessing some youngsters will get a kick out of sharing this movie with their friends until someone's parents complain. A very little not sexy kissing, some tastefully presented violence and one instance of bad language when the senior (living) priest, in the fight of his life and under a lot of pressure refers to the demonic forces as a "crafty bugger". Not much budget, and not good enough so that discerning audiences will be at all times unmindful of this, but it gets better as it goes on. A couple of good locations (shot so that they appear like way more than they are), a bunch of actors, plot followed by more plot, some makeup and other effects and there you have it. After a while it becomes apparent that even semi-innocent bystanders are not safe from the supernatural terrors, and the violence escalates in the last half hour or so. How will this increasingly complex mystery of a plot resolve itself? Sometimes the adversary just kills everyone in these movies and things get resolved that way. The last ten or fifteen minutes are actually pretty dramatic and enjoyable. Won't tell.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
8/10
Exciting retelling of the story of a great historical event.
23 July 2023
Two things got me into the theater. They were the interesting subject and curiosity about how such a story would be told. Plus the fear that this fun theatrical experience might tank before I got around to it. No worry, there. This is the stuff of legend, as it should be. This thought provoking movie tells us exactly why that is so. If you don't know anything about what happened prepare to be amazed. It is based on a book and reading history might also be something you would enjoy. I was a little surprised at the style. A little chaotic and loud. It all comes together, though. One character, an ordinary (seriously smart) man called by unusual circumstances to participate in one of the greatest events in contemporary history. It also tells why anyone would ever do such a thing, for it is quite awful in every sense. Anyway, if you can get past the effort to get us into Oppenheimer's head using weird graphics and strange musical effects, the somewhat altered depiction of real events in the interest of storytelling, and the three hour run time, you may find yourself rewarded with a first class entertainment.

The Little Mermaid (II) (2023)
7/10
A nice re-telling for the kids.
10 June 2023
This will be a good movie to watch at home with little kids, so you can chat with them about the action in the movie. There is one great learning opportunity here: the way the sea witch goes about using the desires and weaknesses of mer-people to get them painted into a corner, then offers an even worse deal to try and fix it. She is always adding some difficult provision to the agreement during negotiations, and she has a fresh scheme going every time she encounters anyone. Real life is like that sometimes. Mostly the message seems to be the power of love and niceness. Not everyone will be happy with the animation style, which is so simple and almost video game-like it seems unfinished in places. Not the usual thing for those used to animated features made be a brigade of artists and technicians. The credits here are remarkably brief. It gets better as it rolls along, with lots to look at and no boring bits. There are stylistic touches that are very likeable, and loads of beauty. The story is nice and should work for the little ones. It answers their questions, never assuming that they can guess or fill in where an adult might. The story really does progress, too, building dramatic tension until ... don't want to give it away. When a child asks, "Why don't they just (fill in the blank)?" Because the story does not have to make sense. But this ending pretty much does make sense! The hopeless situation comes to a happy ending and all is great.

Relationship-flick nicely balances comedy and suspense.
14 April 2023
This was quite good. Not a wrong note. Every technical aspect done well. I wanted to know more about the helicopter adventure, just for fun and to make the overall story more real. No problem, though, as this is a story about love and what can happen in unusual circumstances. Every character rings right. This happy movie also isn't afraid to poke fun at itself at times. The humor also, is about love. I felt involved in the story enough to be really concerned about how the characters could deal with the difficult dilemma that is the plot. Not at liberty to reveal much. Suspense builds toward the end, especially for those of us who don't watch movies like this much. Recommended.

M3GAN (2022)
8/10
Sci-fi fantasy horror show candy for everyone.
12 January 2023
They had me with the trailer. Went for the first show day one of local release. There is a lot to love here. Like the script. The exposition that can be an affliction to movies like this is character enhancing, plot driving dialogue. Plot, like everything else, is pretty conventional in style and progresses sensibly. Would you believe kid friendly? I promise there is nothing in this movie that has not occurred to a little kid. They will realize right away how M3GAN, who I don't believe could have more actual smarts that a crawfish, somehow knows how to do stuff. M3GAN does not just gather information from humans in front of it, but the breadth and depth of the net, including the device you carry. M3GAN has taken over everything in its world in order to accomplish its programmed objective. The programming isn't great (remember HAL9000?). The mad-science team means well but children may want to know if the irresponsible company they work for could be a real monster somewhere. This movie is loaded with stuff to think about. Toward the end M3GAN has gotten so much confusing input and experienced enough hardware damage that it should come as no surprise when its behaviors become really unpredictable. Usually M3GAN knows just who should be destroyed and can figure out how to do it. So many great stylistic touches in this movie. And for $10,000, yes I would buy a M3GAN for me. Look for delightful mass production this Halloween.

To the End (2022)

An interesting look at contemporary activism.
10 December 2022
If you remember the events in this documentary very well it will illustrate a time line of contemporary history, from a particular side of serious controversy. Serious because there is a lot of money and government control and major industrial concerns involved. If you don't remember it well, it could help direct you in researching what happened, and help you decide if you even care. The presentation is engaging, with many names and dates provided. The enthusiasm and frustration and moments of triumph of the young activists is exciting to observe. Sometimes we don't get all of the information that is wanted, like is that a hunger strike? I don't know. Who are the people causing an unlawful disturbance? Does anyone know that? I don't know if the opposition has a documentary like this to provide balance but wouldn't that be interesting as a double feature? You could do worse that to watch this documentary about people who intend to make a difference because they must.

Violent Night (2022)
7/10
Cute tale of holiday magic, mayhem, love and faith.
9 December 2022
This is a fun parody of many tired traditions of the season and the action movie. I found myself caring about the characters, though not enough to be real sad when someone is put out of their misery that really needs it. Being naughty does not make you happier. This movie teaches many good lessons like that. The survivors end up believing in Santa, but I could not believe every convenient plot element. Also, the violence was a little repetitive, at times. Not to quibble too much, as it is 100% amusing. I love it when we get holiday-themed movies that people who have no use for Christmas can enjoy. Not a gap in the craftsmanship anywhere. Well done.

Entertaining narrative of legendary events.
15 November 2022
Director Howard has selected lots of rare elements reflecting the aspects of The Beatles touring years that he finds most interesting, and shares them with a narrative style that works very well. Good for those yet unborn, when the question comes up, "what's a beatle?". Also loads of fun for those who were there and loved it. A lot of this stuff I have never seen, or didn't find amazing enough to follow up on. The early touring in England is not presented in much detail, but the refusal by the band to play racially segregated venues gets its due (even including the contract specifically stating no obligation to play said venues, ho ho). Many witnesses to these events are presented, and The Beatles themselves, in all their talented goodness. Recommended.

Well-made and action-packed and good songs
10 November 2022
This played so well in a theater where you can hear and see everything. I saw the subtitled version. A big screen with a good sound system will definitely add to the effect. There is a lot going on all the time and the imaginative antics just accelerate. The plot and characterizations invite the audience to care, even though it is all fun to look at and quite funny. Did not occur to me until afterwards that this setting probably isn't Earth it kept me so busy. Good songs. I especially like the driving beat numbers but there are nice ballads and inspiring anthems also. Loaded with out-of-control magical elements, action and color. Good fun.

Holy Spider (2022)
8/10
Entertaining, character-driven crime thriller.
1 October 2022
The events that inspired this story made international news. I suspect some of what is on the screen actually happened.

A serial killer is strangling the junkies who work as prostitutes in the holy city. This is controversial, inducing terror and mistrust. No one wants to be killed or suspected, though some openly praise this illegal activity. A very determined journalist comes to town to investigate. We accompany the journalist and meet many characters whose words and actions inform us about the situation. We also learn pretty quickly exactly who is doing the killing by closely following along for some shocking incidents. Who and how is revealed, along with an uncomfortable social context. Much of the movie is an intimate visit with the journalist and the killer whose activities are being investigated, and the suspense increases. After a while the audience is led to suspect that the civil and clerical authorities might be okay with wholesale murder, under certain circumstances, and the journalist will not stop, taking crazy chances.

The artistry is first class throughout. The way all of this is presented makes us feel closer to every character, so we can better consider how we are the same or different, in our social context. Dangerously determined journalist versus homicidal maniac has been done before but this movie is exceptionally good and most entertaining.

Sort of entertaining nonsense.
31 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why is this movie playing in an art-house venue, or any other theater, I thought. Joined several other curious strangers to find out. A local broadcast tv station had been having marathons of shark fantasy movies and some of them were fun. This should be better, yes? Anyway, no one gets caught up in a story like this for long. Too many things take you out. The lady playing the Chinese technician (survivor of a tragic and low-budget naval disaster) does a nice poker-face while acting displays itself furiously around her. This character is being held on a U. S. Naval vessel so that makes way more sense than most of what happens. Loads of exposition, and it looks like this is a sequel to some movie I've never heard of, so I came late to the story. Real Naval personnel don't have such entertaining banter with officers, or stand around on the deck directing fire when "world war three" is imminent. Why would giant sharks attack ships, San Diego, or anything? Part of a Chinese plot! Okay. Wishing good fortune on all who set sail with this project. Don't think it will play well on tv at home. Show it in a theater packed with intoxicated people though, and you could have something!

The Lodge (2019)
8/10
Beautifully crafted horror.
1 March 2020
My only possible criticism of this finely crafted and uncompromising horror tale is that the third act seems slow at first. It kind of makes sense though to put the audience right in with the characters, trapped in an weird situation with seemingly no hope of escape. Gave me too much time to think. So who do they think will enjoy a movie like this? Fans of good cinema art and some fright film fans. Some will turn on the lights and walk out of the room, saying, "This is boring, who wants a beer?" Know why? They are scared. Don't be hard on them. Pretty ladies being chased through the woods by special effects to a rock soundtrack are absent and this movie really is not for everyone. The "jump scares" are few and tastefully done. The audience has ample opportunity to scare itself, but not always. There really is something strange and awful creeping toward you in this movie. Well written. Well acted. Well photographed. Nothing does not feel real. Everything good. If you liked popular family picture The Shining (1980) and wish it was more grim, and if you enjoyed The Witch (2015) but would like to see some more contemporary horrors ... HAMMER to the rescue. Paid $16 to see this on a whim and not at all sorry.

Cats (2019)
7/10
Weird fun.
2 February 2020
I had the experience of renting a VHS copy of a filmed production of Cats decades ago, and found it pretty unwatchable. The production was done nicely, so maybe I just wasn't in the mood. The television ads for the first run were fascinating, as were television performances promoting it. Then I watched it at 7:40PM, New Years Eve, alone in an auditorium in one of the most popular theaters in Santa Monica, CA. Enough about me. This movie is pure cinema, without the mechanics that make theatrical productions happen. Cuts are very frequent and the camera is everywhere. There are song and dance numbers with special effect mice and cockroaches (the cats find them fascinating but hardly ever kill them). Sir Ian and Dame Judith perform, and Ms. Swift appears to have co-written an additional song with the original composer, which she performs. A story has been added, but the chaos of articulate tails, computer generated London, and a multitude of other elements that only movies have, pretty much dominate. Relax. It is only a movie. Pretty enjoyable. Probably ok for kids.

Good adaptation with laughs and terror.
2 February 2020
Just let yourself enjoy it. Starts slow, introducing the cast and setting the scene. Is there something about this region that attracts weird stuff like you would find in a pulp science-fantasy-horror-fiction story? Soon something bizarre and unbelievable occurs, and the horror and distortion of ordinary reality begins relentlessly creeping in. Never mind if it does not make sense in places. Something from the unnamable beyond will do what ever it does, and there is no escaping the influence of ... we know not what. I wondered as a kid what would happen if a droll wit like James Whale adapted this popular story. It would be hard to get closer than this mix of humor and horror. Sometimes you have to let really crazy situations be funny, if just for a moment. Toward the end it is just good Lovecraftian bizarreness and pretty fun. Tommy Chong, all-purpose entertainer, delivers strange dialog straight (?) from the story to very good effect as things start to come apart. The entire cast is good. I might have shot this in black and white but the colors we are actually seeing could pass for refracted and reflected elements of something else. No problem. This movie pays homage to a singular literary talent who found movies a waste of time, and does it well. Clearly made with love.

Flip Wilson... Of Course (1974 TV Special)
7/10
Top stars are mostly great. Welcome to 1974!
6 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, how I loved Flip. He has some expert help keeping you entertained this time, sort of like his variety show, but you may have heard of the cast for this special. A lot of what you will experience is dated but mostly in a great way, and all of this entertainment style was popular at the time. Ms. Reeves and her band are great. I didn't really get a some of the preachers in church bit, but you might. Mr. Sellers does one weird joke. Good comic acting by Mr. Pryor as only he could. The pool hall scene is very funny. Ms. Tomlin joins Flip in a long variation on one of the routines that made her a star. Sort of hit and miss, but worth your time for sure.

Fun, sentimental comedy-western-drama-suspense hyper-movie.
5 September 2019
Hard to classify, but that is okay 'cause it is very good. Was afraid it would be gruesome and unpleasant but Tarantino was way ahead of me. Not giving away anything and feel lucky that I had little idea what to expect. About half way through the suspense began to build. Where on Earth is this going? It will help if you have knowledge of the details of what was known as the Tate-LaBianca murders. A lovely trip for those who remember Hollywood in about 1969. Remember Larry Vincent (Seymour) and 93KHJ-Los Angeles? The depiction of the Manson "family" looks spot on to me. Sort of like looking over Liberty Valance's gang and deciding you would not want to ride with them. The story also brings to mind The Party (1968) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) as well as a whole lot of television. This movie goes by fast, like life. When a story is this good I sometimes tack on a moral in my mind, so: "Second chances in real life are few, so give it all you've got with love."

Charmingly realistic science-fiction thriller.
19 July 2017
Mostly low-key and grounded in the real world. Almost all of this movie works beautifully. Special effects are slipped in where needed amid the non-actors and non-standard locations. Simple story is literally a journey. Danger, surprises and humor. Who will survive? Not everyone! Good for grown-ups but children may be bored or imagine that this is a documentary.

Blair Witch (2016)
7/10
Cute re-imagining.
19 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie for people who like this sort of thing, especially the first one. It is worth remembering that the original was extra interesting for a variety of reasons, including the way in which it was developed and produced. This one is an imitation that uses the same tricks and adds some. New technology is introduced that does not help the hapless victims at all and even makes things worse for them. Do not recall seeing one map or compass. Didn't hurt that the characters don't seem to be designed to be very sympathetic. This time we are the old folks by the side of the road waving "goodbye". Once the nonsense plot is established things become increasingly nightmare-like, which is cool. Nightmares need not make sense. Spoiler: no survivors, and we can't really even tell what happened to them.

Strange and scary family picture.
26 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Also funny. Almost anything I can say would be a "spoiler". You may not want to let the children see this, as it might upset and confuse them. For adults it could be very entertaining and even thought provoking. If you liked Hausu (1977), Night of the Living Dead (1968) and The Birds (1963) then you might like this. Full of weird surprises to keep you guessing exactly what is going on, and who on Earth dreamed this up. Gruesome, violent and disturbing in places, beautiful and technically well-executed. The setting is realistic but the story is so strange that the acting might appear odd at times. That this movie seems intended to say something about society says something about society.

Godzilla (2014)
7/10
Fun, violent giant monster fantasy.
23 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this in a theater in 2D and found it enjoyable. 3D should make it better, a little (if you like this sort of thing; otherwise, stay away). Has everything a proper Godzilla movie should have. Yet another origin myth is provided, but it isn't too bad and does not take too much time to explain. The actor in charge of this does a nice job and this little bit of exposition ended with applause from the audience. The rest of the exposition is gotten out of the way so fast it is almost comic. No problem. A kid wearing a red baseball cap has a ringside seat for some of the giant monster battle. Most of the Godzilla movie homage is not so obvious, unless you count the entire plot. Massive destructive action is exciting and dramatic but not too harsh. Most kids don't give a darn when people are getting killed in a movie unless they don't realize it is only a movie, so let them know. Humans are portrayed as noble and heroic and doing the best they can in a difficult situation. Some of the human elements of the plot kind of threw me like they did not make sense and it goes by pretty quick. Repeated viewing should not hurt this movie much. Worth seeing once.

Entertaining and sobering story about 5 young Germans living in WW2.
7 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this in a theater in two parts and found it fascinating entertainment, as well as educational and sobering. At the end the audience was very still and quiet, clearly impressed. This movie tells a barely plausible story of five young Germans who happen to be celebrating their new adulthood as their country's war against the world is heating up. The characters and situations that follow seem like the usual composites from history. The really great thing is the artistry and technical sophistication with which it is presented. Rather than cartoon villains and heroes and clearly contemporary style situations we are presented with a variety of personalities, right down to the smallest character, dealing with situations that really occurred during the war. The only spoiler I want to give you is that the five friends have agreed to meet back home in Berlin when the war is over (around Christmas?) but as things get worse they sometimes joke that they may not be in time for the Fall Semester (of what year?). After a while the audience is really wondering who, if any, shall survive. Please show this to impressionable young people for a quick history lesson.

The Conjuring (2013)
8/10
Well-crafted, scary fun.
15 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I seldom give movies an 8, but this one is quite good. Not caring much if it is inspired by alleged true impressions of events, or whatever. Basically a story of supernatural horrors trying to kill people, to put it mildly, and how they reach out for help. Will everybody get killed? Kind of looks like it in the super scary first half. Then they tone it down into more of an adventure. Seems a little well lit at times, but when the darkness comes it acts like a character, and of course it is out to get them. Many skilled artists did great work on this picture. The soundtrack could be used in your Halloween yard haunt 'cause it is real creepy. Be advised that the supernatural horror likes to attack children. Enjoy.

Tristana (1970)

Interesting story very well told.
5 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Everything about this movie is excellent, unless you are looking for lots of special effects and dislike storytelling. Concerns a young lady who has become an orphan somewhere in Spain between the Great Wars who goes to live with an old bachelor. He rejects the mores of society and preaches freedom of thought and action to his friends but tends to be rather traditional and overbearing when it suits him. It pleases him to control his young ward and treat her like a wife. In time she meets an artist who she likes and things get more complicated. If you laugh, things are funny, if you are enraged or afraid for the characters, then it is drama. In this kind of slice-of-life movie you can pick and choose who to root for. Story flows beautifully like a good novel.

The hard work and artistry of (maybe) the best burlesque venue.
7 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Gentlemen, this is it. A fascinating contribution to world culture presented in film documentary by the great Mr. Wiseman. Fantastic t and a displayed by talented artists whose dedication cannot be denied. A fast education on how a modern burlesque venue operates and maintains the enviable status of "best in Paris and possibly the world" (my words). As usual Mr. Wiseman allows his subject to speak for itself. Glimpses of the city also provided. Really interesting to see how the tableaux are created. To see these wonderful stage effects without having to travel all the way over there is a treat. Highly erotic and charming. If you want your children to think that erotic entertainment is bad trash or if you cherish a belief that this sort of thing cannot be classy, forget it. Otherwise, yes.

Wake Wood (2009)

The madness of grief leads to supernatural horror fun.
7 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I love that our beloved Hammer horror movies are well enough remembered that people are trying to make stylish, classy and inexpensive movies like this. Hammer also made comedies (hint, hint). This one turned out very good. Well written, with the first hour devoted to setting up and exploring a good variety of tastefully presented horrors. Good acting, good staging and camera work, good story-telling. Seems these two people are in a state of distraction due to grief over the horrible death of their little girl. They up and move to a little farming community where things are a bit odd. They are invited to gain some closure by resurrecting their child ... for three days. That is all. Must obey the rules and do everything correctly or extremely dangerous unspecified results will happen. They go ahead anyway. How on Earth the folk of this village ever learned this supernatural trick would make a story in itself, and we are fortunately invited to imagine it for ourselves as the expected flashback/exposition stuff never comes. None of these people really know what they are playing with in true folkloric tradition, any more than we do. This charming family time soon becomes a violent supernatural nightmare for a half hour of more typical horror fun. In the end we get a non-resolution bordering on madness. Nurturing family values get a bit twisted, so this movie is not for everyone. Once in a while I see something I would have done differently, like a lady giving up blood for a weird ceremony by having her veterinarian husband cut open the palm of her hand. Why the palm? Couldn't he have done that better? Never mind. A movie this good will be noted for it's few imperfections. Great Halloween gift for certain people.
