Good Grief (2021)
Really, really funny
I found this show by chance on AMC and absolutely love it. The dry, subtle humor of this show is fantastic. I love the scenes with the twin sisters making jokes at each other's expense because it actually feels real, as in jabs they would say to each other in real life. The show does a nice job of balancing the sadness of death while remaining compassionate and funny. Although the plot and characters are completely different from the British version of 'Ghosts' there's something about 'Good Grief' that reminds me of it. The supporting characters add a nice bit of quirkiness to the show but the main characters, Ellie and Gwen, make this show one of my favorites.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Entertaining
Easy to watch and entertaining performances by a stellar female cast. Reminded me of a cross between John Wick and Sin City.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Everything about it was awful
This movie was absolutely awful. I read all the Fear Street books growing up and this trash movie is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the great storytelling/character development in the books. The addition of Sunnyvale was completely unnecessary and felt like the rival towns were pandering to Riverdale's audience. This movie also seemed targeted for the Stranger Things fans but completely missed the mark with zero character development and complete lack of suspenseful storytelling. All of the characters in this movie were incredibly unlikeable. The suspenseful tone of the books was completely missing from this movie. Overall it reminded me of the hack job they made out of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I really wish Netflix would have put this project in Mike Flanagan's hands (Haunting of Hill House) instead of letting Leigh Janiak butcher this. And, as other reviews have noted, the constant shift from 4 seconds of a song was incredibly obnoxious.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Fun without thinking
Just go into this movie knowing it's not a "thinking" movie. It's entertaining with over the top gore. I loved that it was set in Las Vegas, it was a refreshing choice for setting and I just wish they'd played up the Vegas campiness a bit more. I do agree with other reviewers, the character of the daughter is the absolute worst. Her storyline could have been omitted altogether which would have allowed deeper focus on some of the other characters. Tig Notaro was a quirky, out of the blue casting choice and her character was easily my favorite. Overall, yes, this movie has many, many plot holes. But, I went into this movie expecting a mindless action movie about zombies and that's exactly what I got. The soundtrack is phenomenal and was part of why I rated this movie so highly. Movie was 6/10 and soundtrack was 10/10 so I split the difference for an overall 8/10.
The One (2021)
Boring and slow
I had heard so much hype about this show (I've never read the book) so I was excited to start this series. The first episode started off slowly, I assumed introducing the audience to the characters and building the storyline. But then the second episode was slow. And the third...and the fourth...I finally quit watching it after the fifth episode. I just didn't care about anyone on the show and couldn't justify wasting any more time on such a boring series.
