Unser täglich Brot (2005)
a visual and philosophical treat
The film has no soundtrack, no subtitles, just the images and that's exactly what it is all about. Our daily bread, what we literally need every day, our every day food, and how is it grown and produced. Sometimes the view is panoramic and the action goes from left to right (or the other way) on screen. Sometimes the view is detailed, often a mechanografic beauty. And that's what is (or should be) shocking us, us as a vieuwer, us as a human being consuming this daily bread. We are witness to the deconstruction of nature into composites, where all ties with the natural are lost. It should wake us up to think about how our daily bread is grown, but on the other hand : the mecanography of the produce of it, is carefully disguised by all publicity about how healthy and delicious and jummy all the things are that we eat and drink...
Bobby (2006)
from a European viewer
As a European viewer, not being an historian and having average knowledge of American history, the starting date "june 4th 1968" means nothing. When the movie starts to show Kennedy, then you realize : oh, it's about the brother... but the specific date doesn't ring a bell at the beginning. I was swept away into an era long gone, where and when everything seemed possible, with hope for the next generations. The camera work, the music, the acting, the images, it's all working... And if you like to spot stars, the film is a wonderful opportunity. Personal issues of characters get addressed, but not all get a solution. And without keeping the date at the beginning in mind, you're thinking that it's a "tranche de vie"-movie. And if you have the date in mind, something is still to come you know in the back of your head. And it smashes you back into the real world today. A long, too long for me as European viewer, end speech, because the rest is history. The 70'ties, the 80'ties, the 90'ties and we're already 2007 ! A nice stroll back to an era when everything seemed possible, a good feeling while watching the characters and not quite understanding the end speech.
Congorama (2006)
Belgian and original
A good movie, with a lot of referrals to the the rest of the story, but the first part is too slow. Maybe because too many items have to be brought in scene, maybe on purpose. In fact, the entire movie is a bit slow for the "more experienced" viewer, that I consider myself to be. Some scenes also might be too foreseeable for them. But : the theme is universal and the storyline is great. The director uses a specific movie language. It is somewhat surprising that this is done in Belgium and not the United States. But on the other hand, if this movie is seen by someone from the Hollywood scene, there might be an American remake. Go check out the original I'd say !
