The Beekeeper (2024)
Fantastic action movie let down by co-star
This is a well choreographed action-packed fast moving movie. Short non-action scenes and the action keeps you mesmerized. You can also feel the cold anger of Statham's character and his opponents are well written up.
However the co-star FBI agent is terrible. Very wooden acting and her lines do not sync with her body language. She just discovered her mother's dead but there is no sign of grief whatsoever. Anger was reflected in her words, not in her facial expressions. No tears at all. You would expect that from Statham as he is a cool ex-black ops operator and used to death. Thankfully she is just the co-star. And her contribution was quite small.
On that point, since he is such an experienced operator, how could he let a low level FBI agent get the drop on him?
Overall, worth watching.
Slumberland (2022)
Disappointing
An interesting plot but miscast of characters really killed off the enjoyment of the movie. Instead, it became a plodding downright dull movie where you feel like physically getting out of your comfy chair to give the plotline a good shove. Jason Momoa is no comedian and he proved it here. His character should have carried the whole story with humour and adventurous excitement but not here. He is dressed up like Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow without the spark or brilliance. Only difference is the horns on his head? What's that supposed to indicate? Furthermore, the kid needs to be cute. She wasn't here but throughout the movie, she was just an obnoxious little selfish girl. Her attitude did not endear her to me, nor did it evoke any sympathy on my part. The rest of the movie was okay but we've all seen it before in Harry Potter, Narnia and Alice in Wonderland. Nothing new here. If Dwayne Johnson was to play the part of Flip it might have turned out different. He's such a good comedian.
Jakob the Liar (1999)
Delightful story in the midst of darkness
Don't understand critics who put this film down. I loved it. Set in a horrible time of history, the story simply brings a little bit of hope in people's lives. Robin Williams was extremely convincing and the plot allows him to utilise his sense of humour and shows his endearing nature. The supporting cast also fitted well with his sense of humour. They were perfect foils of him as Jakob. Where he is an optimist, his best friend is a pessimist. Jakob is a pacifist but his young associate is always advocating violence. Furthermore, his lonely existence is filled unexpectedly by an orphan girl whom he protects from the menacing authorities. What more can you ask from a movie. Certainly worth watching.
Paradise City (2022)
Waste of talent and time
Very poor acting from the main characters. Should have just concentrated Bruce Willis and John Travolta instead of the rest of the amateur cast. The plot is not believable, neither are the 'natives'. The rest of the cast are totally unconvincing. The words came out alright but their lack of connection with their facial expressions and body language is laughable. Bad guys, aside from Travolta, are about as menacing as NOT!! Just because you are carrying an automatic weapon and say a few F-words, does not make a convincing thug. There's no humour, no excitement and the plot is extremely predictable. Enough said of a non-event.
