Second Sight: A Love Story (1984)
Interesting lovely movie, but puzzling if you have read the book first
Please note this review contains spoilers both about book and the movie. Sheila Hocken's "Emma and I" is an autobiography book on which this movie is based. It has been one of my favourite books for years, so was looking forward to watching the movie. Although I liked the movie characters and the dog was just adorable, it left me a little bit wondering why did they change it so much from the book. The book was amazing and perfect by itself. In real life, Sheila and her husband (yes he became her husband) lived together for many years with Emma and had a child middle-named Emma after her dog. Emma lived with them for many years before the operation took place. Emma was a chocolate Labrador, not a yellow one. But the bit I found the most disappointing was the movie ending. Emma actually stayed with Sheila and the family in real life, as she was coming to the end of her working life anyway, and also guide dogs organisation has never had a case of someone regaining their sight, so they let Emma stay. And in case anyone is interested what happened to real Emma, she lived to 16 yrs old with Sheila & the family. Sheila was so smitten with her that she decided she will breed chocolate labs and they ended up having 6 dogs including a chocolate German Pointer who belonged to her husband. They also had Siamese cats too, and lived happily ever after as a wonderful big family. Sheila wrote 7 books about Emma, I cannot recommend more reading them all, they will touch you way more then the movie. You are likely to find them second hand on Amazon and Ebay, I don't think they are on sale anymore in regular bookshops. So movie gets a reduced 8 for the unnecessary changes, but it is worth watching.
I Am Legend (2007)
The worse Will Smith movie ever
What a disappointment! The only reason I gave this movie a 2, was because of the beautiful dog.
I couldn't wait to see this movie as I admire Will Smith's acting. Although he didn't really disappoint, the film plot certainly has.
1.This is a horror movie, make no mistake. This movie should not be allowed for under 18s. The amount of violence and horror was sickening.
2. The beginning had so much potential, so many possibilities to develop, so many possible endings, that I couldn't wait to see which way it will go. But 1.5 hrs of building up the plot, the hopes and expectations, and building and building and building (ARGH STOP BUILDING AND START A PLOT)......it ended so quickly and in such utter nonsense, and the character that survives is the one we barely saw for 5 minutes! Cmon! It was like: "Movie intro: 1hr 35 minutes. Oh, we ought to have a main plot and ending, let's squeeze them in the last 10 or so minutes. Oh how are we gonna do that? It don't matter, let's just write anything really - intro is good, so ending won't matter." 3. Story is full of holes, even for a rubbish horror movie. How did he not remember where he set the trap? It's not like he's got many other things on his mind now is it? And to faint so quickly and for so long - gimme a break. As for the cure, imagine Alexandar Fleming passing on the Penicillin to his mate about 2 minutes after discovery, then killing himself without revealing how it is produced or how to be used etc? Peh-lease! It's not like there are many scientists that survive innit! Then, to have a chance to escape and then not to - for what reason? It's not like that grenade thingy was going to kill every last one of the mutants ever. Speaking of which, who the heck would keep a grenade inside the drawer WITHIN the room where he kept the mutants! CMON! But the worse hole of all, why the heck did he do that to Sam? Didn't he keep infected animals in his basement and test vaccines on them? So why didn't he keep Sam? As a pet owner, there is no way that I would not attempt my best to save my dog. So this was just nonsense and start of the rest of nonsense in this movie.
4. I am angry because the movie could've been so much better: shorter intro, curing Sam, not finding a handy grenade in most unlikely spot, and perhaps curing the nation. Life can be miserable enough without watching a movie with a miserable illogical ending.
So I've been generous here: 2 out of 10. Will, pick a better movie next time. Please!
Man About Town (2006)
Waste of time
Well this movie is simply - a waste of time. I only watched it because the reviewer before me said there was comedy in here, but I failed to spot anything, and I mean anything funny - at all. I don't know about you, but I don't really find cheating funny, or a medical stroke, or a car crash, or GBH, and apart from a bad tooth job joke which was on a level of a 3 year old knock knock joke, there was nothing to be called this movie "comedy" about.
As for the "drama" - despite all the above mentioned, I wouldn't even classify this as a drama, its hard to explain unless you see the movie, but all the above bad stuff has been dealt with in the movie so terribly, that you don't even get to feel for the guy, or the girl, or pretty much anyone. And if there is no feelings developed for any of the characters, there is no drama when something happen to them. In fact, the remote sadness I felt was for the 2 second car crash, which was so understated, that you really had no chance to develop even a tear.
The story was so badly written, that if you asked me what was the movie about - it was about a (badly written) journal really. The story was, boring and shallow, with ludicrous action points, and final that makes you say "What the...?"
So, a "Feel good movie"? I'm actually feeling very angry now at wasting 1.5 hrs of my life on this. And to top it all it did not help that narrator was Ben's monotonous "I don't care about anything including this movie" voice.
So all I can say is, I'm off to watch some Lee Evans. Now THAT's a "comedy", full of action, passion and feelings: all that this movie - IS NOT!
PASS!
How High (2001)
Complete waste of money and time
Well, as much as I love hip hop and Redman as a hip hop artist, this move simply stinks, pun intended. Its all about glorifying drugs and I am completely at a loss as to how this was allowed to be released at all. And what is up with constant swearing? You'd think a rapper would know more words then that and be able to express himself in more ways then one!
Comedy? Now "House party" was a comedy. This ain't. Stopped the tape after giving it a very very long 20 minutes.
So, unless you are into the same ..erm..."hobbies" as these two...don't waste your money. Zero out of ten.
Variola vera (1982)
One of the scariest movies based on a real life scary event
Variola Vera is Latin for Smallpox. This movie is based on the last major European Smallpox outbreak based in Belgrade(Serbia, former Yugoslavia) in 1972, where only 35 died (comparing to around 2 million deaths yearly before 1967). The low number of deaths was due to a government's swift reaction to the outbreak, where army, quarantines, blockades and Martial law were imposed, and country's borders closed for about 2 months. Smallpox re/vaccinations throughout the country was organised so well that within 2 weeks every citizen was vaccinated, thus stopping this horrific and easily spread disease).I still have the scar from the vaccine from that period, but I don;t remember anything, as I was only a wee thing back then.
This film is based on the events within the Belgrade hospital where a patient zero was first diagnosed with Variola. The film realistically portraits the panic, the feelings and the desperation of people who were forced to stay in the quarantined hospital. This is a movie, and not a documentary.
Although I have seen this movie over 20 yrs ago, one thing that has forever stuck in my mind was the music, which was so powerful, it still scares me just thinking about it.
This movie should be translated to English and shown to the rest of the world. It is one of the best peaces of (former) Yugoslavian movie creation.
