Another Life (2019)
Poor effort.
Not sure who this was made for, as it's fit for the mentality of a child, but the profanity presumably means it was made for adults.
Terrible acting by 90% of the cast, the writing is appalling, the story is nothing new or particularly interesting and the characters are straight out of a bad soap.
The only good news is that in the future FTL craft can be operated by total morons, so hopefully we'll lose a whole raft of these crap TV programme makers to the far side of the universe.
Zoo (2015)
Monkeys must have written the story!
Not sure how this ever made it to three seasons.
It's premise might have made for a decent show, but the episode scenarios are so dumb that it's hard to watch. It's simply mind numbing and so totally stupid it becomes annoying very rapidly.
I would suggest giving it a miss and just watch Hitchcock's The Birds or similar.
There are no redeeming aspects I can think of, other than it thankfully never making it to a fourth season.
Foundation (2021)
Enjoyable sci-fi, but not as good as Foundation.
Quality engaging sci-fi series which is unfolding nicely, with multi-layered story lines, special effects and decent acting, especially from Jared Harris.
I had been looking forward to watching this series since it's announcement. I loved the Asimov books and story, and was hoping to see his brilliant vision brought to the screen.
So I'm torn, as this series has little to do with the Asimov books and is let down in that respect.
Why it needed to be re-written is a mystery, as the story is no better and lacks the atmosphere of the original Asimov works.
The writers have tried to be different with how they've interpreted various aspects of the books and characters, but it hasn't added anything of value and has effectively dumbed the story down.
Probably worse is this means it's unlikely in my lifetime, the actual story will now ever be put to screen.
If you haven't read the books and have no expectations, then the lack of Asimov's story won't bother you, it's well worth a watch and should merit running for a few seasons.
I Want to Believe (2020)
Lacking content, would be fine as a radio show.
Sadly just another repetitive UFO documentary which uses too much CGI and pointless or random unexplained imagery to spice up what is effectively a radio show style discussion.
What was being said was fair enough, and well enough put, but for those who have followed the UFO story, it brings nothing new to the table.
It's almost as though these CGI fest all talk with no visual substance documentaries are being made to bore the pants off of people who may otherwise have gained some interest.
Abominable (2019)
Hope it's better in Mandarin
Not sure if this was a Chinese exercise in attempting to make a western animation, but if it was, it's best it doesn't happen again. The dialogue / script is stilted, overplayed and banal at best. It's trying so hard to be western, it falls on it's face. The idea is fun, and so are some of the scenes, but I couldn't help think this was some kind of Chinese "aren't we a lovely place really" propaganda movie, and I'm surprised Dreamworks wanted anything to do with it, other than money of course. It's the sort of movie that Studio Ghibli could have pulled off, and I felt at times Pearl Studio were attempting to rip off some of that Studio Ghibli magic, but if they were, they failed miserably. So it only gets a five from me, as it made my kids giggle just a couple of times.
Robin Hood (2018)
Mountains in Nottingham!
Wow, I live a stone's throw from Nottingham and I had no idea there were mountains there and desert scenery alongside the Trent...I'll have to revisit!
And who would have thought that during the dark ages that a thriving Chinatown existed there complete with modern art Christian iconography and Irish speaking valley girls!
Repeater crossbows and flying horses, Victorian riveted steel machinery and WWII Hugo Boss clothing.
And the gentry were called Toffs!
The dark ages were much more fun than I could have ever imagined! You could even survive a crossbow bolt to the heart without the slightest hindrance.
Best of all for the girls, you could be a penniless mine worker and still look like Greta Garbo after a makeover experience when finishing a hard day's graft digging for.....???? No idea what they were digging for in Nottingham, probably credibility!
Barabbas (2012)
How many quarries are there in Tunisia?
The film never gains any depth, momentum, coherence or credibility. It's a mess from beginning to end. Ridiculous characters, character behaviour and historical scenarios, and it appears it was mostly filmed in stone quarries in Tunisia.
At times it's a like a bad parody of Life Of Brian! Simply awful film in every department, give it a miss unless you have masochistic tendencies.
Hooten & the Lady (2016)
Just doesn't work!
Plots are so wildly stupid and unbelievable that it's hard to engage with the rest of the show. Has a Scooby Doo type logic, so any attempt at reinforcing the terrible and totally idiotic plot lines with decent acting, characters or dialogue fails. Has the odd funny comic line and it looks good, otherwise only for those who can disengage their powers of reason while watching it. I found it almost impossible to like the main characters or care about them, as they were just white noise over the childlike story line. The show drafts in some quality actors for various episodes, but sadly they fail to shine against the awful plot backdrop. There was obviously the potential to produce a quality action comedy show with the budgets which must have been made available for this, but sadly it's a poor attempt.
Psycho (1960)
Great film that misses it's main objective for me.
I always saw Psycho as more of a thriller than a horror, although it has obvious horror elements.
Although the film is a classic and warrants extensive praise for it's total construction, acting and fantastic soundtrack, it failed to have any impact on me whatsoever as a scary or frightening picture.
The often mentioned "tension" never got to me and I have always felt this film to be weak in comparison to it's huge reputation.
It ranks on this website as the greatest horror movie ever made, but I personally wouldn't have it in my top hundred, as the primary task of the horror film is to scare the living daylights out of the viewer. Psycho never quite achieved that with me. Other films of the period such as "The Innocents" and "Night Of The Demon", were in a different class in terms of scare movies and still to this day have a scare factor and tension that "Psycho" sadly lacks.
Great film that misses it's main objective for me.
