It's more like a documentary
Due to the current situation of the world, I watched this movie to get a taste of what could happen. While the situation looks dire I find it yet too optimistic. Yes despite the desolation, death and destruction, the anguish of the people living there I still find the movie to be overly optimistic. If a direct hit of a nuclear weapon on your city hits, unless you're in a deep bunker your survival chances near zero, let alone multiple strikes.
Also I love the fact that the media were saying there's nothing to worry about while they were still reporting on the military exchange, I do not believe today's media would be reporting anything truthful at all, as such would never worry in the first place to command you not to worry.
All that being said the movie portrays very well extremity of the situation and it's possibly the only one that does not pull any punches nor there is a mad max style of hero.
Black Mirror: Loch Henry (2023)
a good whodunnit mystery but nothing to do with Black Mirror
It's a rather ok sort of a whodunnit serial killer mystery which starts when two young adults wish to do a documentary and turns out much much darker than they could have possibly imagined. Also I am wondering if the kid is a psycho too, personally I would have never released such a film. However it's not a particularly hooking storyline as it took about 3 hours to complete the episode (pausing to do other stuff) but more of a creepy pasta storyline which everything is revealed via the use of Deus Ex Machina right in the end.
That being said I am, like many others, watching Black Mirror to see other perspectives of technology abuse and this had nothing to do with technology or its abuse.
The Orville: From Unknown Graves (2022)
Probably the most significant episode for humanity.
This episode is all about the origin story of the Kaylons, how and why they rebelled against their creators and why they're so distrustful of biological species. The episode itself is very well thought out and entertaining but as someone who follows the strides AI is taking the creators of this episode have definitely have some great ideas on how to solve the problem of self awareness of AI.
The original creators of the Kaylon have imposed themselves over them using pain and punishment which devolved to sadism. The solution presented, that is beautifully crafted into the episode, involves providing such A. I. with emotions and particularly empathy which caused a particular Kaylon unit to feel remorse for the actions carried out by himself and his fellow Kaylons.
I would go one step further and add that in our future in case we ever develop sentient A. I. to make sure we have the way to instill empathy, love and nurturing feeling into them, in a way for them to enjoy their service to humanity without them being victims of sadistic behaviors across the field; exceptions will always exist as as such laws preventing abuse should be put in place and enforced.
Now I understand that many pointed out, including me that Isaac could upload his memories into the computer and download them again, but this was not the point of the episode. It is a simple a subject they simply felt the need to address but not affect the whole story arc of the series. Could they execute it better? Yes but with limited time they had to finish it off within the same episode so they took a shortcut, for which I forgive them.
All in all for this kind of perception which is staring in our face but we're oblivious to it because when we think of AI we think of it in a machine like way ourselves. I must give it a 10 out 10!!!
Star Trek: Discovery: That Hope Is You, Part 2 (2021)
Absolutely idiotic just terminate the show and bury it deep into the Delta Quadrant
Aside from the horrible acting and the air punching action the decisions of the crew are absolutely stupid and made no sense whatsoever.
What should I pick on? Well there were a myriad of bad decisions that was stupid AF but I will pick on two both from commander Burnham.
1. When they hid on top of the turbolift the controllers said on the radio: Negative we cannot find them and were ready to abandon pursuit. Then Burnham killed one of them while there are dozens more waiting for them and somehow
hoping to survive through this. Totally unrealistic you just can't go against an elite taskforce while they overwhelm you in positioning, numbers, equipment and communication. Just stay hidden and wait for them to leave or at least leave a couple of guard.
2. Why eject the core and risk everything when you already have a potential escape route in the form of the mycelium network. Just jump and escape, there is no need to destroy the other ship especially at that kind of risk. Utterly stupid.
Then there's the explanation of the burn... oh come on that burned all of our brain cells, that structure held for 150 years give or take and decided to collapse the moment they safely transported into the discovery : I puked in my mouth:
Let's fly? seriously? FFS
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Now that's a real movie about racing
Aside from the dramatization and the embellishment of the tensions between the corporate world and the racing team most of the facts are mostly historically accurate. The only thing I did not like is that they push the throttle further in the straight, in the straight the pedal is to the metal all the way and if you want to run a bit cooler your foot is still steady on the pedal 90% of the way, not 10% then 100% then 50%. Apart from that it is a really enjoyable and gripping movie for any racing enthusiast about the most iconic feud in Le Man's history. The part that is really missing is the actual feud between them but that would make the movie 5 hours long. No this movie is about two racing legends. Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles who even to this day real racing fans adore and daydream about.
If you are even remotely interested in racing 100% watch it
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
As movie is good. However the title is extremely misleading it has nothing to do with racing
The movie as a drama is not bad and it is actually enjoyable so I would reccomend watching it but not if you're a racing fan as it has absolutely nothing to do with racing. The racing scenes shown either on the TV or the timeline are a huge mess, at one point you see races that were live and the cars from the 70's and at other points from 2018 and 90's and whatever. For me as a racing enthusiast I was trying to establish the era by the footage shown and that was all over the place.
Secondly the racing story is completely unrealistic. Let's say he is around 25 years old at the time the movie starts since he had already a few seasons under his belt. By the end of the movie he must be at least 35-36 years old. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY in the modern era goes from a road car test driver to F1 Champion. He wouldn't even been given the chance to even come near an F1 car. Also the reason he gives why he is fast in the rain is plain stupid and hold no truth whatsoever. Obviously the moviemaker has no idea about racing and possibly never even driven a car.
Change the title into something else such as : The struggle of a man and I would give it a higher score. That being said I wouldn't have watched it.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Enjoyable movie kids will love it... but a bit too fake
The movie is a nice family friendly movie, you will enjoy watching it but its not a cult classic Harrison Ford habitually spoils us with. What bothered me most is that they took too much liberty with the CGI dog Buck rendering his behavior, intelligence, wisdom and general demeanor, more human than dog and that the villains were straight out of a comic book.
Kids will absolutely love it (my wife was pushing me for 2 months to watch it) and you'll enjoy it but they could make it a bit more realistic. Nice adventure though
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Enjoyable as a movie but dumbed down plot and acting
As a movie it was enjoyable for the most part but the plot was significantly dumbed down to the point that everything was more or less predictable. Also the acting of especially Rey was badly executed with several corny one liners, the whole plot was corny. I definitely expected more from Star Wars but it seems things have gone down the drain after all that. How could they even make Palpatine merciful like a classic Bond villain from the 60's is beyond me. I say merciful because he could have easily finish them off. Isn't the dark side all about power and fear of loss of power, well the threat is before you and begging to be finished off, yet.... I can only say that: Palpatine the Merciful.
So as a movie i rate it a 6, but the plot eff me it must be a 2 at best.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Unique in the sense they have made their own critique.
Is it worth it? I wish i could say yes but it seems like the creator gave up halfway through and went on autopilot. It is hard to say; it is just not a good film. It is abrupt, unsettling and horrible and violent and weird, awful and scary and dark and bleak and creepy. It seems unfinished it is mostly a curiosity value at best. They must try harder.
My verdict 2.5 stars out of 5
Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)
Stupid but the fun kind
People looking for deep plots and meaning forget it, the movie isn't meant to be anything of the sort, so those who are quick to dismiss good old slapstick comedy shy away in the name of her Majesty.
Now there were scenes that looked as if they were dragging on and not really funny anymore but as a whole the movie was funny and enjoyable. The best part is that it is a movie for the whole family and everybody can enjoy it. There were parts that got me in tears laughing.
On the downside however it seems that Johnny got a bit dumber with his retirement so I think this would be a good time to call it quits as I doubt the next one would be able to present us something worthwhile.
All in all I would totally recommend this movie for laughs
La casa de papel (2017)
This is a masterpiece, I do not understand the hate. Do not watch it dubbed!!!
In general i am a sci-fi aficionado , but series like breaking bad and casa de papel are a wonderful change of theme into the real world.
The story and development is gripping and will glue you to your seat . Some developments are predictable if you think about them but there are always surprises , i've watched the whole season in 2 days and i couldn't get enough of it. Some say the acting was weak, not it was not weak, yes sometimes actors were overreacting but people complaining do not have the ability to enter the psyche of the people participating. If you were in such a treacherous situation, with hostages, the possibility of ruining your and other's life and any mistake can cost dearly then yes one would be shaking. The reason they say Berlin was a strong actor is simply down to his psychological profile. Plot holes? I have not noticed anything that has not been explained in one manner or another, yes there were some holes but this is a serial just enjoy it. I did not find the plot weak at all and every mistake by the robbers could have serious repercussions if not for lady luck playing its part, but eventually their luck might run out. I assume the hate comes from people who do not wish to read subtitles and play it dubbed which would ruin the whole experience. I never watch anything dubbed as it destroys the colour of any movie/serial. Por favor watch it in the original language
Annihilation (2018)
the only reason i give it a 4 is because it had some pretty cool CGI's. Don't waste your time it's two hours you will never get back
Throw anything logical out of the window, nothing makes sense and nothing will make sense. They throw everything a movie should contain out into the rubbish can. No solid plot no goal no emotion no resolution. I mean if i was a biologist and the first thing I encountered were goddamned inexplicable mutations we know nothing about I would take my samples and run back to safety and laboratories. Then you see a mutated GATOROID attacking in an entirely different MO than normal gators and your decision is yes continue the journey with shoddy automatic weapons and ZERO military experience. I mean who does that? In this movie humans must have the IQ of just a bit above a potato. The ending makes no sense either.
Just an even more pretentious "artistic" and "deep thought" movie like gravity.
Don't waste your time on that one
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Unemotional and superficial story but perhaps a hidden meaning
The visuals were nice but the voice acting was bad, and by bad I don't only mean flat but it did not give an ancient Japanese vibe at all. The premise of the story is somewhat loose without solid explanation and purpose. The boy essentially embarks on an adventure without really knowing the purpose or the consequences. Also I would seriously doubt that any child of any age would be so candid and feeling like pulling off jokes and pranks at the same time his village is destroyed and his mother died, unless he is a psychopath.
The only thing that might save this story is the hidden meaning that reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth. That is, all that adventure the boy embarks on is his imagination to actually let go of his already diseased parents and accept his grandfather as his family and a caring person rather than evil for being alive. There were several cues that may suggest that case as for example the forgetfulness of his parents (in his young mind he cannot fully grasp memories), the emphasis on storytelling for the people who passed on, and lastly the gear which he strives to get hold of and later abandoning (indestructible sword, armor and helmet) to break the magic/curse of his grandfather which could signify one's sheltering from reality (denial) and then shedding it to reveal the truth (acceptance). I don't know if that is what the writers were trying to convey but that would make it slightly more interesting.
Elementary: Up to Heaven and Down to Hell (2016)
funniest episode so far but judging the MS part
They skim through the MS issue casually, no MS is not cruel , it is the worst possible hell ever!!!!! as someone who lived alongside that disease I can attest that. Yes I've even ditched a potential mate because i learned she had it from a 3rd party. Before you judge me as a monster, my mother has MS for over 30 years I just couldn't take it anymore and honestly i don't know how my father can still take it. I couldn't so i ran away. It destroys the very being of someone you love and it destroys you in the process as well, chipping away a little bit everytime. Death by a million slashes looks like mercy in comparison. In my mother's case it left her a husk with zero cognitive abilities paralyzed but not comatosed. I am sorry to say but to get involved with someone with MS knowingly is pledging your soul to hell for the rest of your living life
Humans: Episode 8 (2018)
1 star for being LAZY AF
I am judging this episode without watching all of it nor this rating is representative of the series as a whole, but you would have guessed that genius level intelligence robots that know that humanity feels threatened by their existence ,and also depend on power that comes from humans, would have installed surge protectors or at least use a fuse that costs 10 cents to their charging stations. I guess they are not even ape intelligence level FFS I have fuses and surge protectors on my computer and my survival is not at stake... Either that or the scriptwriters got REALLY lazy and underestimate their audience's intelligence. I am disappointed!
The Grand Tour: Blasts from the Past (2018)
Genuinely the best horror movie i've seen this decade
Aside from the Ford GT review which was a bit rubbish and rushed to be honest, the rest of the series focused on two old racers vs a new Type R. On the racetrack of Barcelona I could genuinely feel the tension and fear of Jeremy! Yes I would do it on the Type R no problem, just needs some determination to go flat out but on that old Aston Martin, I would do it Hammond style and not do it ( and I used to race at rallies next to cliffs). At that speed the Aston was jumping and bottoming around making it less about skill and more sheer luck as it could go horribly wrong very easily. For Jeremy to do it he could be feeling a bit suicidal I guess because that needed a few key ingredients: True grit, luck, and willingness to submit to your fate aka as insanity. I genuinely felt my heart pounding and kept my breath while he was doing the lap even though I knew he survived it since he is presenting the show.
The Punisher (2017)
A new rating system must be devised for it is R for RAW
The violence in this series is nothing like I have ever seen before ever! It makes John Wick look like Little Johny went to the park and played with cute ducks. Yes it is totally raw and looks as real as it could possible look. That being said it is not the classical nonsensical violence you tend to see in action movies or series where they force a fight to occur just to show off its violence. In here it is organic and necessary backed by an extremely well written plot. Yes I agree that some elements are predictable but you don't really mind as you just anticipate the final showdown. For action fans out there it's a must see series and even though I am not an action fan I loved that one as it is RAW. The only thing I didn't like is how easy are the non important characters to kill, always at wrong time at the wrong place and makes it very easy for the main characters to go through them.
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
A perfect 10!!!!
I wasn't sure I wanted to watch it at first, especially with that bad experience of the other arcade game genre movie that i don't remember it's name but eventually i gave in and watched it. This movie is absolutely beautiful and awesome. It will make you fall in love with Ralph and the other characters, laugh at them, but can also make you quite emotional. A movie that can entice all my emotions in 1 or so hour is worth a perfect 10!
Spectral (2016)
Boring and cliché
Hero is ultra intelligent that figures out everything in minutes, troops are children trapped in men's bodies, and the regime is a hideous monstrosity. Spectres act like zombies and even though it's supposedly a scientific reason behind it, the explanation is rather idiotic and simplistic. So is it a sci-fi? Not even by a long shot is it a thriller? nah not really is it a mystery? just a little bit is is a mindless action movie? Yes it is is the plot enthralling leaving you for more? Nope, very linear and predictable plot, watching my phone's background was more interesting. Does it leave any meaningful message to resonate in the thing between your ears? I think that thing switched off during the movie I give it a 4 because the picture quality was nice and had some cool CGI's and even though the plot and acting was bad it was not bad enough to just switch it off. Would I be disappointed if I had watched in the theatres and fork out 12Euro? Instant regret! Fortunately it's Netflix so you don't go to watch it at theatres.
Air (2015)
Not worth watching
Even though, the acting was descent and the original premise for the story showed promise in the end it was predictable and rubbish. The only thing that i found interesting was a bet I made with myself: You have two guys, one is a black man and the other resembles Sean Bean a lot. If it was Sean Bean I wouldn't even bother to bet but hey that's someone who looks a lot like him. So who will die first??? It seems that just looking like Sean Bean is enough to get you killed. Other than that you have two guys that are bordering crazy. One doesn't give a f**k but is edgy, and another who does whatever his imaginary wife in his subconscious tells him to do. Yeah it seems that wife doesn't even need to be alive (or awoken in that case) to call the shots.
FFS I shouldn't even check the spoiler alert box, it's so cliché and predictable that even 10 year old's would figure it out within a few minutes, couple that with an extremely deflating ending and you have one of the worst sci-fi (really?? Sci-fi???? that's not even sci-fi or thriller or whatever) movie of the decade!
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Enjoy the journey and it will cleanse your soul
Halfway through the movie and came to realize it is one of the rare movies that the end result doesn't really affect anything but you simply enjoy the journey. *edit* End of the movie. A very surreal movie with such a deep but simple message. A message fortunately I haven't wronged. I give this movie a 10/10 such a cleansing experience. Leave it to the French to create a masterpiece out of convoluted pieces. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. But beware not all can enjoy this movie as much as I did as you have to be able to keep track and discern the different timelines very fast. It's been a very long time, since Pan's Labyrinth, for a movie to touch me so profoundly. It will make you smile, it will make you sad and it will make you shed tears for both reasons. 10/10 This is a classic piece of art.
RoboCop (2014)
Expected more. Mediocre movie. Cheap Imitation but watchable
Back in the 80's I grew up and Robocop was an amazing movie for that era. So good that I actually seen it again when I grew up a bit and the atmosphere was engrossing as you could feel the struggle of law enforcement against the villains and feel the depth of corruption in all levels. The action was perfect and agonizing.
Enough about the original movie let's go to the modern version. two cops use peashooters against baddies make it alive. So baddies put a bomb in his car. Very close up and personal way to kill someone. Then it goes on and on about Murphy having to get used to the idea of being amputated but somehow alive. OK I give it to them that is was a nice touch. But the action was on the low side. You had an overpowering machine going against everything solo killing everyone in his path. His only serious injury is self inflicted and was stolen from another movie (that was stolen twice already but without the drama of other movies since the arm is mechanical). The atmosphere felt fake as well as most of the actors except Murphy probably.Furthermore unless Murphy is totally stupid he should figure out already the boss was corrupt to the bone. This is a cheap imitation of the 80's movie were Robocop would grow on you. By all means it is watchable the same way Abibas are wearable but they're not Adidas, just cheap imitations.
Chyornaya Molniya (2009)
Spiderman axiom in play here (negligible spoilers)
With great power comes a great responsibility... It was an enjoyable and light movie. Don't expect the movie to make any blockbusters or become a classic but if you nothing else to watch then it's worth a look at. I would rate it as a family movie since the plot is fairly simple and the action is not really violent.
By the way i didn't know humans could withstand pressure in space or even breath in space... oh well and when coming down in the atmosphere things usually burn not freeze... these are small details but details are what make this movie childish.
That said, all in all I can say I enjoyed the movie.
The Woman in Black (2012)
Unimaginative. Not worth watching
The setting for the movie is a spooky old house in a very strange village. Yeah the atmosphere is good but that's just about it. The acting doesn't get any marks either, although not awful you can feel they just don't feel the dread... as you aren't either. But the plot is even unworthy mentioning. It's the old classic ghost story with a vengeance killing innocent children in the process because she lost her child. Really stupid plot that would be barely OK in the 50's not in 2012! Completely unimaginative with a couple of screams to shock the most fainthearted and that's just about it! You will find no suspense and no horror here and really not worth spending your hard earned money to watch it. I admit I am not going nuts over horror movies because mostly they are just plain stupid but I enjoy good one's. This is ain't one of the good one's! I give it a 3 only because the picture is nice.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Fantastic in 68 but not so in 2011
I've been going through many sci-fi movies in the past few years and I must say that this movie gave a lot of food for thought and context for all the sci-fi movies to follow. However if you are watching good sci-fi movies you may find this one quite on the low side. Firstly it is extremely slow and this movie could be done with in half the time...honestly at some point i had to move it fast forward not to fall asleep (some say it is the beauty of it...guys we live in a hectic pace our brains cannot tune in such a slow pace) Secondly graphics were absolutely magnificent for the time a real breakthrough to be honest... not so now though Plot: Now this is where it become so simplistic but credits to be given it prototyped in 68'
*********** ********* *********** ********* SPOILER WARNING ********** ********** *********** ********** ********* ******* ********* ********* *********** ********* *********** *********
The idea of a computer becoming a sentient being and try to control everything is a common theme in modern sci-fi and i think it all started with this move...however this becomes tiresome for those of us with sci-fi experience and maybe just maybe people in 68 did not understand what the monolith is all about and find the ending enigmatic... not at all... really not at all as it is nowadays so common as bread in sci-fi themes. The monolith represents a breakthrough in evolution and this is mentioned completely in the beginning of the movie where (man-apes) discover tools/weapons for the first time. The next big jump in evolution takes place with the second monolith - SIMPLE. He sees his body withering and ageing at an extreme pace only to be re-birthed as energy and may I add an extra-dimensional entity. Of course there are also somewhat hidden riddles to take into account. For example why HAL - a computer tries to take over and in the end destroyed? Although not obvious at first it is easy to decipher. It means our technology could be the end of us if we do not have a fail-safe mechanism to keep it in check. But also that machines cannot evolve faster than us. Yes they may get faster and calculate faster and predict outcomes more easily (as it was in the chess game) but in essence they lack our intuition, will and creativity that has developed in the human race through millions of years of evolution (experience). A consolidating factor that is... I give it a 6 out of respect for the era (if I watched it at 1968 I would probably give it a 10) but for 2011 it is not making it. So if you are wondering about the ending... well what can I say than to watch it again and open your mind to the impossible... This is after I watched only once and it was a fairly easy conclusion that Bowman has re-birthed as an entirely new entity which will define the next generation of "humanity" an extra-dimensional being of energy, who knows no past no future no present... Those notions have no value in a non-linear space-time.
