Cheaper by the Dozen (1950)
Saccharine family Utopianism
The father is a loathsome "tough love" bully and Myrna Loy plays the mother part like a limp biscuit. It's no wonder why the churches thought this movie was in keeping with their moral values that all good families should flock to. The parents are always proved to be right and a woman is there to procreate like a rabbit and always support the husband. The comedic attempt was over the top and I was totally bored.
Inherit the Wind (1960)
Man's continuing existential angst
Powerful acting by all on a topic that should have been put to bed by now, but is unfortunately still being waged by religious zealots across the globe - denial of any facts that could possibly contradict what people living thousands of years ago believed about their environment.
The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938)
Clever Criminal Satire
This film is unique in mixing genres that keeps one rooting for the cool and calm Dr Clitterhouse, no matter what he does. The film keeps one in suspense from beginning to end. Other film makers have been influenced by it and paid homage in two very obvious scenes, in films such as Ladykillers and 12 Angry Men.
Pickup on South Street (1953)
Heavy Handed
A B film with a great deal of ham acting and unconvincing sado-masochistic romantic element, thrown in for good measure. Thelma Ritter's performance is the only redeemable feature of this lacklustre movie.
