Dune (2021)
Brilliant in every aspect - Lord of the Rings in space
First of all, I did not read the book nor did I watched the first adaption (attempt) from 1984. Therefore, I had no bis expectations.
The story is quite simple actually. It's about a big house getting the order or the emperor to manage a planet, where a very rare substance can be found. But the order of the emperor was just a trap to get rid of the big house and install the old house again. Of course there is more to it, but these are the major plot points. I read that some people think that the movie is just a prologue or an introduction. Well, it doesn't feel like that for me. Its like Lord of the Rings, first part, perfectly good from the story at is it.
I thought the plot would be more complex, so I was quite surprised how easy and understandable it was. I'm pretty sure that the book is massive and complex, so it speaks for the writer of this movie that the movie itself is quite simple.
The setting and the cast, especially the main protagonist, are perfect!
Now comes the biggest selling point for this movie: visuals are absolutly stunning! It is a MUST watch on the big screen. I even went two times, since it was so incredible. What an experience!
For me this alone is already enough to make it a really good movie, but then comes the music from Hans Zimmer, which makes the movie a masterpiece.
You really can see that the director loves the book and wanted to bring it on the big screen! Its not just your everyday movie. It's grand, slow and heavy.
Vinland Saga (2019)
Good start but becomes boring after episode 8
After falling in love with Attack on Titans, the anime Vinland Saga was recommended to me to fill the waiting time for the last season of AoT. I was quite interested about the story - a japanese anime showing a scandinavian history. Never heard of something similar before. And then seeing all the good reviews here, I was quite confident with this anime.
The first episodes were pretty good. I thought that this will be the introduction to a big plot with many different layers. But then came the time skip and the anime showed what it really was. Just your normal everyday adventure with a teenage kid hating his bad master for killing his father and going on a journey together to fight for the king.
Well honestly I was very let down. There was no real big scheming with other characters or different goals and dynamics. It all felt quite open and simple. Honestly after episode 14 or so, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it any further. It became so boring and dull. I was even falling asleep watching it.
I would recommend it for people interested in the scandinavian history and vikings. But to expect a big story with complex characters like Game of Thrones or a thrilling and interesting story like Jujutsu Kaisen will be disappointed. And of course comparison it to a masterpiece like Attack on Titans is nowhere in sight.
Castlevania (2017)
It was good but went downhill after season 2
First of all, I did not play the games and was not familiar with the story. The show was recommended to me so I gave it a go. The first and the second seasoons were actually pretty good. It think they should have stopped there. The third seasoon was just a big filler - there is no other way to decribe it. Only the story from the one swordmaker Isaac is somewhat interesting and meaningful for the plot. The story with Trevor and the mage and especially the story from Alucard are just nonsense. Also the romance between Trevor and the mage was quite fast? It was a surprise after the second season. And now the big finale, the last season. Well it was okay - somewhat stupid that there was no other idea than to get Dracula back, again. So it was like the same plot as season three. Also the conflict with the church was no more there(?), somehow no priest was in any episode. The ending was so clichee. I dont think that such a story needs such a happy ending.
Animation felt a little bit cheap, compared to japanese anime. The music was not worth mentioning.
All in all I would only recommend seasons 1 and 2.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
It really is a masterpiece
This tv show is just amazing. You cannot say otherwise. The story, the characters, the animation, the music - everything is from another dimension. Some fights are just so epic, you will stay on the edge of your seat. Some dialogs are so good, it could be a wand tattoo and you would be proud of it. And the plot, oh my, that is just first class. Some say Game of Thrones had the best plot twist, they had not watch this show. And honestly, what did Game of Thrones delivered after season 4? Nothing! And this is the major advantage of AOT: It gets better with every season! Writing this review the anime is in the middle of the final season and oh my, it delivered so much already. It is fire!
I pray that they will give us a movie from AOT, like the demon slayer tv show got. It would be so epic to watch this masterpiece on a big screen ( and yes i watched it on my beamer at home so it is already really big, but still).
This TV show deserves every praise it got and so much more. It is on another level, not only comparing it to animes but also to other tv shows.
Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019)
Generic story with beautiful animation and good music
The story of demon slayer is pretty simple. Tanjiro is the main character, his familiy gets killed by a demon only his sister survived. Now he is becoming a demon slayer to hunt the demon who murdered his family. For that he'll be part of an organization, called demon slayer corps, which a ranking system going from 1 to 10. On this journey he meet two other young demon slayer, which then accompaing him on his quest.
Well, reading that you might see many pretty generic plotlines. Of course, that must not be bad per se. But the thing here is, that the characters are quite flat. Our young hero Tanjiro for example is really nice and friendly, thats it. He has no flaws, no errors. He has a tragic backstory, cries sometimes and must train more to become stronger... wow, never heard that before. Same goes for all the other characters and also for the world. Like the ranking system for the organization, it was just once mentioned. During the first season we only get to know members from the highest rank. What about all the other ranks? ( It would be like in One Piece during the first 100 episode we will only meet yonkos ). And to the style of the main characters: The main characters look so much out of place with the hair and the styling, compared to other people. And nobody is paying attention to that (not like in FMA were everybody is constantly looking at them)
What really is amazing about the tv show is the animation and beautiful drawing. It is really top, watching the episode 19 season 1 was really amazing. Also the music is quite good. (But honestly, music and animation not as good as AOT - lets be real here).
The tv show is okay to watch, it can be funny and interesting. Maybe younger audiences will love it more. For me it is quite predictable and generic.
Is it a masterpiece like so many keep saying? No, not for me.
Gekijô-ban Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Ressha-hen (2020)
Overhyped tv show got an overhyped movie
The movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train followed directly where the first season of the tv show ended. It shows the group around the main protagonist Tanjiro going on a train as a next mission for the demon slayer corps. I'll not go further into detail about the story, but I think it is necessary for the movie to watch the tv show, or at least a summary. There is no introduction into the world of demon slayer. The story, the animation and the music are basically the same like the tv show. That means the story is still pretty generic, with characters, which are mostly flat and some still annoying.
(Some of my major critic points with the movie (contains spoiler!): At the end something tragical happened, but the audience didn't get to know the person fully to feel much about it. Therefore the pain and the tears from the protagonist, were not really understanable. They just got introduced to the person like 3 hours ago maybe. The other point was why was there a rank 3 demon so suddenly? And why is the protagonist not longer interested in taking blood samples? Why are the only talking about the highest rank in the corps, what about all the other ranks?)
The animation is still amazing and beautiful! Just sometimes the cgi was a little bit too much for me, but overall it is really top. Same goes for the music. Really nice and well fitting.
The tv show is overhyped, same goes for the movie. Yes, the animation is beautiful and the music and style are okay. But is it a masterpiece ? No, not for me. It has a quite childish humour, the characters have only one personal trait, everything can be categorized in good or bad. The standard pattern as you can see.
