Not too bad, but needed different casting
28 August 2023
This movie is one of my favorite genres, and I wanted to like it more than I did. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it enough that I don't regret spending 90 minutes watching it, but it could've been better.

Grace Van Dien did a fine job, as did Kyle Gallner. My biggest issue with this film is Summer Phoenix. The whole time she was in scene, it felt as though she was trying too hard to act, like she was in an acting class trying to convey emotion. It didn't feel natural like the others, and therefore it was incredibly distracting and at times, painful to watch. Because of this, the bond between Anna and her mother felt artificial, and it's an important part of the story. This movie definitely suffered because of her, in my opinion.

Other than that, the story was very good, well told, and it kept me tuned in. 6/10.

Dopesick was superior, but this is a great show!

Please stop comparing this to Dopesick. Yes, it's the same subject matter, but the entire show is vastly different in just about every way: tone, perspective, storytelling, characters, etc. The cinematography and cut scenes add levity, which is quite nice to have with such heavy subject matter. And the music is exceptional!

So yes, Dopesick was a better show, but it was a much darker, gritty, sad telling of the events. It's like when the Sixth Sense came out, it totally overshadowed Stir of Echoes, which was a great movie but didn't get the acclaim it deserved because a version had already been done in a masterful way. Painkiller is a very entertaining show that tells the same story, just a little differently.

Stop comparing it to the movie, it's an adaptation!

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure why all the super negative reviews after just one episode. Since when can a person gauge a show based solely off the first episode? I mean, c'mon. I decided to give this a watch because I love both of the lead actors, and after binging 5 episodes, I was thoroughly entertained!

A lot of folks have commented the lack of chemistry between Jackson and Caplan, and while I somewhat disagree, I also think there's supposed to be a forced or curated element, especially since we learn Caplan's character (Alex) mirrors and mimics characteristics of her perceived suitors to artificially craft connections with them (in a masterfully yet subtly sociopathic way, acted well by Caplan).

At first the varying POVs and time hops can be confusing or distracting, but by episode 2 it's clear what's going on, and it works well since it gives us insight into each character's perspective and actions. I also particularly like the addition of the crime solving element, as it keeps me eagerly anticipating what's to come. Overall, is this the best show on TV? No. But it's thoroughly entertaining as long as you are aware this is an adaptation of the movie. If you want the movie, then watch the movie.

Funny, poignant, and relatable - the best of Amy!
8 April 2022
This show is all the good parts of Amy Schumer! People either love or hate Amy - I happen to love her, and his show encapsulates why. It's hilarious at times, tender and sad at others, and really enjoyable to watch.

Amy herself doesn't try to be or do too much (which she sometimes can), and what we get is a character we can feel for and empathize with, but laugh along the way. With a great supporting cast, this was truly a gem of a show. Now I just need to go find an artisan farmer of my own.

Dark and beautiful, such an amazing show

This show is truly a work of art. It's dark, the characters are flawed yet beautiful in their own ways, and the music and cinematography are exquisite.
