The Rocker (2008)

Who is this movie for?
24 August 2008
I realize in the US this is a PG-13 movie, but I live in Manitoba, Canada where it is rated PG, because in Canada we enjoy corrupting 7-year-olds. This movie has physical comedy that maybe your average 7-13 year old (13 at the OLDEST) would find hilarious, it deals with adolescence in a fairly wholesome way that maybe Young Republicans or Young Tories would find compelling, and it is also the billionth Hollywood movie to deal with a man stuck in his youth who won't grow up. So it seems like trying to appeal to everyone and pleasing no one, I would've loved to see a harder edge to this movie instead of the kiddie/family values stuff.

The only reason I saw this movie is because I'm a fan of The Office, and I wanted to see how far Rainn Wilson could carry a starring role in a movie that I wasn't expecting much from. And he's pretty adequate, but actually funnier in the Youtube clips where he kidnaps Jenna Fischer on the set of The Office and says he won't set her free unless "The Rocker" grosses $18.7 million in its opening weekend. Kind of sad when amateurish Internet promotion of a movie is funnier than the movie.

Rainn Wilson and Jason Sudeikis (I'm too lazy to look up the spelling of his name) have some good lines, and Emma Stone may have a pretty bright future, but as a big Superbad fan I could be biased about that...other than that, pretty much nothing of value in this movie.

I hope Rainn Wilson manages to get better starring roles, the awfulness of this movie isn't his fault.

Exploitation of people who aren't onto the tactics of artsy documentary filmmakers...
18 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Exploitation of people on so many levels. First, "Oh, look at the quaint Maine smalltownians! Their life is so much different and more backwards than our urban lives where we can visit a Starbucks on every street corner." But that's been done before already, especially by presidential candidates, and I guess isn't that bad.

Second, the boy's mother seems naive in actually going along with this entire exercise in the first place, but she was probably heavily manipulated by people who were out to "promote their art" and "make money".

Third and most importantly, two disabled children (The 15-year-old main character and his 16-year-old "girlfriend" of one day) have had moments of their awkward adolescence preserved for eternity. I know that when I was 15 a heck of an entertaining (Entertaining in a "that strange kid is so cute and observational" sort of way) movie could've been made about me, which would permanently harm mine and my entire family's reputation and personal lives...

If I were rating my opinion of the filmmakers' morals in making this in the first place, I'd give it a 1. The 3 is because I sat through the whole thing and didn't vomit or walk away from the theatre, so, like Mein Kampf or some other work out there which was created with intentions I disagree with, it still has artistic merit.

Okay, I guess
17 December 2006
I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as a young child, but apparently I have a very mild form of it (or I was misdiagnosed entirely), because I am nothing at all like any of the characters in this movie. I've met people who are like the characters though, so I can believe that any of those characters would be like that in the real world.

I thought it was well written and funny, and well-acted, but ultimately was more meant to be a romantic comedy than have serious meaning, and I don't know if I would've rated it so high if all of the characters had been "normal people".

One little thing I noticed, no disrespect to Radha Mitchell, though I hadn't heard of her until after I saw the movie, midway through the movie I realized she was Australian. She needs to work on her American accent because it was fading in-and-out in a pretty noticeable way.
