Loki: Glorious Purpose (2023)

A Fitting End to A Fantastic Series
10 November 2023
I am not going to lie, there are several question unresolved and it does feel in many ways that some characters are shoehorned into their starting blocks for wherever they go from here.

That said, this felt like a conclusion to these characters' story and while that is sad because this in my opinion has been EASILY the best of the Marvel shows, it is also happy because there are some satisfying resolutions to overall story arcs across the two seasons.

What this means for future Avengers movies is possibly one of the most intriguing questions moving forward but in an era where even the most ardent Marvel fan is feeling serious superhero fatigue, that is one positive. In reality, if you wanted to step out of the MCU here, you really could because that had a finality about it that nothing really has since Endgame and to me, this is fitting because this is comfortably the best thing since Endgame for Marvel.

Loki's arc does now feel compete and while it will be a shame not to see these characters again, there just isn't really anywhere they can go from here that would be satisfying and well done, Loki's journey has been one amazing ride and kudos on, for the most part, sticking this landing very well.

This Season Has Really Hit Its Stride
3 November 2023
This episode understandably starts somewhat slow and this is good, it needed to. It really feels like all the branches came together here over the two seasons really. In fact, it feels like this show is coming to a conclusion which would be a shame, it has been consistently good to epic.

This episode has so many great moments, really funny ones too. It feels like this is the result when you get some great actors involved and give them a fun script to work with, they bounce off each other so well.

It definitely felt like a set up for the finale but it was done in a really fun way. I am really looking forward to the last episode and seeing where all of this comes to a head now that Loki has basically levelled up. If he isn't killed off, he might well become very important moving forward because of what he can now do.

What on Earth??
27 October 2023
This episode kind of meandered along for the first part but then BANG, once it gets going boy does it get going. Loki has been the shining light in the tv era of MCU and this season is not disappointing but this episode just does not go where you expect it to.

It certainly looks like it is going to be fairly generic but this show has been consistently good at going left when it looks like it is going right and this one does that here. I am making this is a spoiler free review because I think it is well worth watching without knowing what happens because when it hits the go button, it does not let up until the end. It goes to a place totally unexpected but on reflection, it absolutely makes sense. There is so much going on, you need to pay attention but if you do, it pays off with a bang.

I have no idea where they take it from here...and for the first time since No Way Home, I am thankful for that.

Ahsoka: Part Five: Shadow Warrior (2023)
Season 1, Episode 5

AVOID SPOILERS AT ALL COSTS
13 September 2023
This episode was fantastic and while it wasn't perfect, it was what Star Wars has always been about at its best. There are some decisions in here made by certain characters that make a whole lot of sense at times but this is nit picking.

The characterisations in this episode was phenomenal and without spoiling anything, Hayden Christensen REALLY shines. He has quite the job to combine so many different portrayals of Anakin through various forms of media and he nails it. He really shows his acting ability here.

Ahsoka, all of her in this episode is really well done and Star Wars continues to find some fantastic actors in the 'Mandoverse'. There are some really hard hitting moments throughout this episode and it all works. Ahsoka as a character arrives with impact.

The pacing of this episode is excellent and I really want to pay homage to the use of lighting and music in this episode, absolutely top notch. But the symbolism in colour is what nails it all. The colours as a through line are just brilliant.

And then the back end of the episode sets us up cinematically for basically this show's third act now. Really, that last few minutes that HEAVILY links into Rebels was beautiful and would have been stunning to watch at a cinema.

The Empire Strikes Back episode
6 September 2023
This episode was fantastic! This show has been great and this episode takes it up a level. So many stakes and so many big moments and yet, it didn't feel fast, slow or forced.

Here we see so many broken characters not really Knowing what to do moving forward. It really felt like Baylan was the doppelganger of Obi-wan and this kind of fit the episode really well. And I really didn't know what decision Sabine was going to make either.

This episode was just fantastic and the only bad thing about it is having to wait a week until we see what comes next and wow, that ending makes whatever come next so so exciting! Bring it on.

Well That Was Frustrating But In A Good Way
10 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This will have spoilers, putting it out there from the start.

Let's go to the big one shall we? We meet Scotty! And what a random introduction to him and yes it did feel a bit shoehorned in but the way we meet him does make sense. I guess he becomes a season 3 regular now.

This episode felt very Jurassic Park in space and there is a lot of plot convenience like Nurse Chappell surviving the ship's destruction and just conveniently having Spock there for them to have a convenient but nice space moment.

Pike's girlfriend is about to explode and what a finish to the episode with her being essentially a ticking time bomb while they are being attacked pretty fiercely by a very formidable enemy. Sentient dinosaurs basically are running around and they are really scary. This is how you build a villain, they do, as Pike said, just seem like monsters who enjoy being monsters.

That said, Pike talking about a way of reaching them will clearly hear fruit in season 3 but how much death will happen in the interim until that happens? I do like that they showed the Federation as being really competent here as they have been planning for this attack for some time but covertly.

All in all, this was an absolute cliffhanger where I don't know what decision Pike will make next and it sucks we have to wait a long time I suppose to find out.

A strong end to a very strong season.

Very Clever and Several Enjoyable Moments but Too Many Songs
3 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I do find it a bit sad the rating so far but I also get it. First of all, this series continues to be excellent and has really captured the essence of the far better legacy series. This episode was bonkers as it should have been given it is basically a journey into the multiverse, albeit Batman The Brave and The Bold music man episode style.

You could see the entire cast was having a ball and if that was their real voices, wow that's a talented cast. Some of those songs were beautiful but there were too many of them. Shout out to the highlight of the episode - the reluctant Klingon boy band - hilarious.

Aside from too many songs, the other nitpick I have is the timing of the episode seems well out of place following the very serious and very good last one about the doctor. After all of that delving into psyche and PTSD, to follow it up with this singing and dancing bonanza is very jarring. This probably would have been better earlier in the season but also given the progression in the Kirk - Singh relationship, it kind of has to be a bit later I suppose. That said, given they spoke that to each other instead of singing, maybe it could have been re-arranged.

And on that note, while all the actors/ characters do really well and is a strong point of this show, shout out to Cheong, she is really, really shining this season, she has a lot of nuance in that role and it is fantastic.

So yeah, it was a lot of fun and I'm glad we got that episode even if it wasn't perfect.

Ended Up a Real Mess
27 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show had the potential to be great but somehow, ended up awful. A strong cast, an interesting premise and one of the strongest arcs in comics to draw from, plus a huge budget. I really don't understand how it went so pear-shaped.

The first episode was strong to the point I was hooked for episode 2 and was excited to talk about something Marvel again, which hasn't been the case much since Endgame and in terms of TV shows, hasn't really happened since Loki. Then it somehow took a fast turn left and then right before spinning totally out of control and literally, with the president, crashing. I am not sure there is much to pick out of the wreckage either.

I just don't know what this show was trying to be. It started off a nice continuation of the Fury / Talos comradery and dealing with the effect the Blip had on this friendship. Talos was a compelling character by a fantastic actor...until he was unceremoniously killed off...and for what reason? His sacrifice ended up being totally in vain and took away one of the few reasons to keep watching this show.

Fury did not seem like Fury at all in this show and leaving Talos for dead, while in the moment understandable, did not have any pay off. Fury's wife was also just...there. Again, what was the pay off with her character? You can take her out and literally nothing in this show changes.

Of course no one stays dead now either because of Extremis suddenly being a thing again...until the plot needs someone to stay dead...at least for now I suppose.

And why did Fury give up the 'harvest'? This was an extremely stupid thing to do and for no good reason seemingly other than to end up in a big boring CGI final battle. Gravik may well go down as one of the worst villains of all time which is a shame because he had a somewhat interesting start. What was Fury going to do if Giah didn't win?

And now of course, Giah, a character we really don't care about, who should be dead, is now suddenly the most OP character in the MCU. Maybe they will just do a Pepper Potts and forget she has powers moving forward. As it stands, she will just be an incredibly boring character because who can match her? She is all the powers in the MCU and of course, both her and Gravik can suddenly use all their powers perfectly with no training whatsoever.

And everything Fury did just made the world worse and the MCU worse. The world is now in a total state of anarchy, and he's like...meh, I'm outta here, you guys are on your own.

And the final stupidity speech from the president totally takes a dump on Talos' sacrifice, why? His loss really amounted to absolutely nothing other than to send a message his hope was wrong I guess.

There are so many out flaws, disappointments and head scratchers that I just don't think I have the energy to waste any more time on going over.

I think this show is it for me with Marvel sadly until Loki comes out because once again, the MCU has ended another exciting project as a disappointing mess. Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the animated series, did this whole storyline MUCH, MUCH better.

Waste of Time
26 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
That really was a disappointing end to a very disjointed show. The world has been left in a worse state than it started and Fury seems oddly ok with that.

Gravik really did amount to nothing in the end. Now we have Gaia as the most overpowered superhero in the universe and it just feels...meh. That was entirely forgettable, a generic superhero v same same supervillain CGIfest.

I wanted this show to be good but it really wasn't and this plain and simple, may be the worst show finale of all the Marvel shows.

Not really sure where they go from her but I don't really care. Maybe Marvel fatigue has got me now too.

I Was Not Expecting This Show to be Good, Let Alone This Good!
23 May 2023
This show is excellent. I have never been one to be into much about Anne Frank, though I am aware it is a tragic story but this show makes me care...a lot.

The show is a miniseries essentially and the last two episodes have just aired on Disney+ and it is just brilliant. This is a show about ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the face of very, very real consequences. These people are not perfect by any means, they make mistakes, they doubt themselves, they question their own decisions and then they take action and live with the risks, the consequences of these choices.

It just really paints what a horrible time it must have been to be alive, especially for Jews and there are moments where you feel like everything is going to be ok and then very quickly, it isn't. They also do a really good job of humanising the Germans too, they aren't all portrayed as monsters but they also aren't brushed with an untrue shade of light either.

This is a show of broken people during a broken time trying to be a little less broken and repair other breaks where possible. It really is a deep dive into what it means to do good things, even if it comes at a cost, a dive into what it means to be human and whether you can stay human in a world where evil is at its worst.

It isn't an action series, it is a slow burn but goodness me, it is worth the slow pace. This show is compelling and I just don't think enough people know about it or would choose to watch it without a recommendation. I give it a very strong recommendation indeed, excellent show by excellent writers performed by an excellent cast.

Maybe the most emotional animated episode ever
8 March 2023
What an episode. Quite simply, I got emotional. We get introduced to a fantastic clone, Mayday and his literal journey drives this excellent story. We get Crosshair back and his progression has been a highlight of the season. We get the fallout of the emperor's decision a couple of episodes back and I just wish we spent the whole season on the clones and their post-Clone wars tragic treatment instead of all the boring stuff with Cid. This is not a light-hearted mission of the week episode, this has real stakes, real consequences and real impact. Watch it and enjoy one of the best animated Star Wars episodes ever and probably the comfortable best of this series so far. Haunting episode.

Who is this for?
16 February 2023
I am really trying to like this show and am willing to be patient with new shows as they find their feet, this one might eventually as well. The characters are all caricatures and that's fine, that can even be funny at times. This show has a decent cast who are all trying their best with the VERY limited material they have to work with. The first five episodes of this show have seemed to work really hard to set this up as light, fun but forgettable comedy, again that's fine and something I was actually looking forward to.

All that out of the way, let's now specifically talk about this episode. It just has to do what all shows seem to need to do these days and ram a hot topic down the audience's throat. I am not here for this, I am here for fun and to escape the miserableness of the world for a bit.

This episode man, what a mess. The whole criminal thing is stupid, regardless of the in your face issues this show VERY messily and stupidly handles about race and vandalism v artistic expression, why are we suddenly implying kids are smarter than adults? Is this suddenly a kids' show?

If so, a lot of the previous episodes' unfunny jokes aimed at adults become quite inappropriate. If it is not a kids' show, why are they suddenly trying to make all the adults look stupid and the kids super smart? As an adult, this is not what I want to switch in to watch and that is also quite offensive. Is this 'protest' really the hill the bailiff wants to die on?

This show is bland and this episode an absolute mess, even in terms of the race topic, Abbott Elementary just did an episode around the same topic albeit a very different setting and managed to make it both funny and relevant. Watch that show instead.

Where On Earth Did This Come From?
26 October 2022
No joke, I had zero expectations from this and I have come away from it with my jaw on the ground, my eyes wide and tears. This was top shelf Star Wars. I am NOT going to give spoilers, just want to say that if you are a Star Wars fan, drop everything and go and watch this right now.

The way the story interweaved the prequel trilogy and showed the decent of the republic into corruption, Dooku's origin story essentially and served as a companion piece to The Clone Wars series as well and bridged into essentially the start of Rebels...and kind of the Ahsoka novel (again no spoilers here), well let's just say this will be essential viewing on any Star Wars chronology re-watch.

This, legit, is among the best Star Wars ever produced, seriously. Don't take my word for it, go watch it, I will be for the third time back to back to back.

That was absolutely brilliant and captivating the whole time
19 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is hard to do this without spoilers but that was a great episode. I haven't been a fan of some of the slower stand alone episodes in this series so far, though I think they will be much better binge watched. That said, it has been enjoyable so far but this week, the slow pacing was spot on. That conversation between Mon Mothma and her old friend was the best script writing in Star Wars, the layers and the hidden meaning and the strength of performance between the two actors was exceptional. The slow noose of the empire followed by the trap door falling, brilliant. This episode is the first one where I've thought, yep these pieces are coming together REALLY well now.

And Ord Mantel!! This is where the fun...continues!

People Will Complain about Lack of Title Character Understandably but...
2 February 2022
We all need to realise this is part of a Star Wars universe now. It is jarring to have gone away from the title character so much in the last two episodes BUT this is a universe and everything that happened on Tatooine this episode ties into the confrontation that is coming. I also think the stuff off world (not spoiling here) will also likely feed into the finale.

Just enjoy this for it what it was, absolute pinnacle Star Wars, we just watched something absolutely iconic and I am forever grateful to et to see something so emotional and so good.

Is it time to move on?
20 November 2021
This show has been a really fun ride and a great escape from reality for years, I wish there were more shows like this BUT after 8 really fun seasons, this show is really starting to feel tired. This episode almost put me to sleep. The jokes are all starting to feel recycled and it just feels like the proposal at the end of last season might have been a great bang to go out on. I really wish it could re-find its magic but this season has felt really tired.

This Show is A Mess...and Yet We Can't Wait For More
9 October 2021
I don't know what it is about this show, its a mess...and yet we really enjoy it. The acting for the most part is terrible, the camera work is all over the place, shots linger for no reason and the music often doesn't match. Its laughable in parts and it really shouldn't work.

Perhaps that is the genius of this show, it is terrible and yet, it embraces it. It is pretty to look at being in Bath and that is probably the best character in the show. The police chief is just a terrible character, seems to purely be there to cause trouble and not really sure why.

The secondary characters are just...there. Again, this show is a mess but it is a fun mess and we always look forward to more.
