Elizabethtown (2005)
A disappointment
I really wanted to like this movie--with Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon, it seemed like a sure thing. However, the plot moved ponderously slowly. The snippets of trendy music that were apparently supposed to lend atmosphere only seemed to clutter the movie. Susan Sarandon's character was a complete piece of cardboard--she was really wasted in this film. The whole failed shoe sequence at the very beginning (and that came up in reviews) was hard to follow and felt choppy and unclear. And...Orlando Bloom looked too darn young to have just toiled 8 years on a product! There were some bright scenes in the title town itself, but nothing good enough to save the film.
Fantastic Four (2005)
A waste of time and special effects
This movie was a great disappointment. After the wonderful translations of Spiderman and X-Men to the big screen, I was hopeful that the Fantastic Four would get similar treatment. Alas, it was not to be. Poor casting choices (Jessica Alba was simply not the right choice for the role of Susan Storm and who was that actor playing Von Doom??), a lack of continuity (things happened in the second half which simply made no sense), and a villain whose motives were confusing and nonsensical (was it all really just for money? revenge? if so, for what?).
The special effects were pretty darn good, but they simply sat there because there was no plot to back them up.
Follow the Fleet (1936)
Catchy songs, but tough to like Astaire's character
Despite being a huge fan of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers' movies, it wasn't until about 6 years ago that I first saw 'Follow the Fleet'. I knew all the songs from an old Astaire/Rogers record (yes, vinyl) but knew nothing of the plot.
Unfortunately, while the songs are catchy and Ginger Rogers' character is sweet and funny, you just can't like 'Bake Baker'. While trying to make up to his longtime partner, he continually sabotages her career. His character doesn't have the usual humour and elan of the other films' Astaire characters.
Worth watching for the songs and a great solo tap routine by Ginger Rogers.
