Sholay (1975)
Lame, but can easily be transformed to flame...
This movie is in essence a well crafted film. Camera-work and sound recordings are superb. However, the storyline could be drafted much more to the point. To value this movie I made my own version by cutting out 70 minutes of unnecessary side and back stories which makes this movie tedious and boring.
My cut is a 135 (instead of 204) minutes movie, full of action with increased pace. I deleted the songs "Ye Dosti" "Holi Ke din" "Koi Haseena", the background story of Jaya Bahaduri, the Asrani sequence in jail and Mausi's approval for having Veeru engaged to Basanti.
Gabber Singh is performing breadth taking and the action scenes are very raw. This rawness is the real beauty of the movie.
Veer (2010)
Why wasted so much efforts and time?
Why wasted so much efforts and time to throw more than 30 million dollars away, if they could throw all the money straight in the ditch and finish the job in just one second? Really, for me this movie is awful and lame. This is a perfect example of narcissist cinema. The central theme of the movie is not Veer but Salman Khan. So if you like to see a movie which highlights all angles of this icon, then this is your movie.
People like me, who like to see a good developed character are curling their toes by witnessing this punishment. Salman is fully loaded with anabolics which block him even to try acting. Veer is king of looking dangerous with angry eyes, however I can't call that acting. The background music score is also terrible: throughout the whole movie you hear "ho ho ho ho ho ho". The stunts are so infantile: Mithun is getting wounded at the end by a small scratch and he yells like a woman giving birth to a baby. I think that this production is definitely not suitable for the westernized world and also not for Indians living in these sides of the world, due to it's logic, which irritates and hurts both eyes and ears. For me the enlightening part was just the appearance of the Dutch bodybuilder as a mad gladiator!
Salman should continue doing movies like No Entry, wherein he plays a naive guy who is been fooled.
Till today, in my opinion, Asoka is still the mature historical epic from Bollywood, produced in 2001.
As for most Indian movies, I state that it's better to release special editions for the world outside India. By cutting redundant songs and some movie parts which has no added value to the main storyline, there will remain a better result to digest for the western viewers.
Blue (2009)
Thank you D'Souza for the great visuals!
I don't understand all the negativity and bad reviews of the self-proclaimed movie phd's aroundhere.
It seems that these criticasters went to the movie to compare it scene by scene with Hollywood ones. Next time these guys see an Indian actor riding on a horse, they will conclude that that particular scene or perhaps the whole movie is a copy of a Hollywood Western.
And so what if it is inspired by Hollywood movies? Finally, it's the result that counts. I like this movie because of it's great picturization! And Yes, the story could have been better, but it's not that bad eighter. Nevertheless, I've seen a good composed story and enjoyed with a lot of popcorn. High standards of cinema are achieved, despite the thin storyline. The last motorbike chase is really awesome. It's stunning composition generates a huge adrenaline boost for the viewer. And the underwater scenes where accompanied by such a nice music score. Yas Raj should learn from this movie how to use background music. A.R. Rahman has proved his versatility as music composor: he has produced very beautiful music for this movie. This man is an Artist! And Kiley's performance is super diva!
The minor point in the story line is the anticlimax at the end. Akshay as a nice villain who needs to be hugged and his motive to save the family honor, disappoints big time. But thank god they spoiled only these last 5 minutes of the movie. I would rather see a more creative plot with a edge of my seat, mean, dirty, rude and crude result.
Despite the lack in content, but due to it's high visuals and powerful action scenes this movie has repetitive value, so I will watch it again. The time for ''Pyaar ke Bokhaar'' (love fever) movies has passed, it's now time for movies like Dhoom, Don and Blue!
Ek Ajnabee (2005)
It's an Indian remake of "man on fire''. So what?
On it's own it's a nice movie to watch. I don't understand some people whom seems to bother about every aspect of a movie. remember just judge the result on excitement, thrills and it's well balanced storyline without making any comparisons.
I saw both movies and i like both of them. Both had great actor cast with also good acting, though this one had an other plot twist.
Arjun acts natural and convincing, Big B did a good job, it's cinematographicaly beautiful and the song 'ek ajnabee' is a nice addition. One thing fascinates me in Indian movies regarding kids: why do Indian filmmakers always cast kids who are suffering from heavy weights? Is it nowadays still believable to promote fat kids as symbol for prosperity?
