Black Mirror: Mazey Day (2023)
Typical Neo-British Horror
So, reading the reviews this wasn't liked as much as the previous episodes so I wasn't expecting a full on horror story. Although the episode didn't include futuristic technology I still couldn't predict the outcome and found it compelling to the very end. I saw it as an observation of the paparazzi and the lack of morals involved. The actors and acting has been great especially in the later episodes and have proudly caught up with the series this year from start to finish, and only have the last availability episode and Bandersnatch to get through for completion. I have enjoyed all of the episodes and count this one as one of my favourites, although for different reasons.
Weird Science (1985)
Worth a rewatch
I first watched this in 1985 on VHS as a 13 year old, so a lot of the sentiment was lost on me then. Having watching it again as a 50 year old after finding it on the BBC iplayer I decided to give it another go. I have to say that it was way more enjoyable now. It really brought back the feeling of being an awkward teenager and the fantasy of being guided through adolescence. There were a few quirks with the story but this can be overlooked by how the sensitivity of being an awkward teenager can be is portrayed. I do think the bones of the story could be updated for a remake that could possibly make more sense but still be a fun movie.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Best bits in the trailer, and what age group is it for?
Disappointed. I was a fan of the cartoon and was hoping for a close adaptation so on a loser from the start tbf. Aside from that, it's not a great film. Feels like it was written by a teenager with ADHD as it didn't make sense at times, or it needed to make an element of the story work by dreaming something up from absolutely nowhere.
Spoiler: I was more interested in the cartoon characters for those few seconds than any of the main characters in the whole film. After being duped into watching the D&D film from the early 2000's I was close to asking for my money back. I'm wondering if there is an issue with the rights to the original characters...
Moonfall (2022)
20 years out of date
This movie has the feel of a rejected script that was rejuvenated because it was recently rejected again by Netflix. Absolute waste of my time. It's the most unclever film I've ever wanted to watch but unfortunately did so. Nothing makes any sense and would have worked well if the script was tweaked as a comedy, as it's actually not that far away!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Turn your brain off
So many 'why's', 'how's' and 'wtf's' to mention as in the first one but I enjoyed it more than the first one so I just turned my brain off and watched.
Don't Look Up (2021)
We'll timed storyline
Not sure if this film would have been the same or even allowed to be made if it was serious, so the tongue in check satire feel is spit on for these times. Does have connotations from today but doesn't go that far into conspiracies or people reading lesser known websites for information. More of a stick it to the man movie rather than turning a blind eye to climate changes.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Will be under appreciated
A fantastic film which wholly includes the previous iterations in such a clever way. Not sure if I have ever seen anything like this that explains a crossover in such a believable way although it was reminiscent of the Doctor Who special episodes with multiple versions.
Could have been slightly cheekier with the character traits of the Peter Parkers (Garfield's sensitivity and Maguire's cheesiness) and could have included an original baddy but in all a bloody good film.
Venom (2018)
Just don't understand how it is this bad
Marvel did a great job with Spiderman for the kids, as it's for the kids after all. The problem from the off with Venom is who it's aimed at. This isn't an adult film for adults, it's an adult film for kids that has a 15 certificate. I read that there were post production problems and you can see it here. The acting is off, the story twists and turns at varying pace and the ending just stops dead, making you wonder if you have missed something. A waste of talent, storyline, film and franchise. Disappointing.
