Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Oof! I expected so much more.
From the poor world-building and lack of character backstory, to the ridiculous over-use of slow motion for something as simple as jumping up onto a ledge, over-reliance on cgi and dialogue that makes Star Wars look good by comparison, Rebel Moon is definitely nowhere near the quality I was expecting, given the hype behind it.
I'm not sure exactly what Zack Snyder was trying to achieve here, but I think it's a big swing and a miss.
Sure, it's visually pretty in a number of spots, but I'm trying really hard to care about any of the characters other than the farmer and the robot.
The robot was by far the best character and was only in it for like 5 minutes.
Part 2 is on the way, and maybe it can redeem this mess, but I'm already starting to forget what Part 1 is even about. Forgettable.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Lazy choreography compared to previous films
Henchmen just standing there, waiting to get hit, reacting to things that didn't hit them, people in the club just doing the same dance even while people are being killed right in front of them, the cars in traffic keeps moving even while people are getting killed, cars are crashing and bullets are flying, but nope.. traffic just keeps on going. I can't unsee any of it.
It looks painfully unnatural compared to how well the previous 3 films handled the fighting.
There's a ton of wasted movement and shot decisions based on making a scene look "pretty" rather than "good."
I know they can do better. I've seen it.
A couple cute twists of the story doesn't really carry the rest of the film, but it was at least still entertaining.
Shrinking (2023)
Incredible
This has to be the best new show I've seen in ages. The writing is amazing, the characters have depth, from bottom to top. The actors are all perfect for their roles.
This is easily Jason Segal's best work and he's made for this role.
Jessica Williams breathes so much life into the scenes and is hilarious!
Harrison Ford has reached a new height here and I love this version of him. So sarcastic, hilarious and genuine!
The supporting characters really shine. The casting is just... astoundingly good. I mean, even the peripheral characters have something memorable about them. The creators of this show are brilliant, and I want MOAR! Lol, but seriously, just watch it.
House of the Dragon: The Princess and the Queen (2022)
Terribly executed time-jump
Aside from changing actors, the idea the children would look 10-20 years old after just 10 years is a pretty piss-poor job of the creators to implement that kind of time jump.
With little to no explanation after the events of the previous episode and a very confusing array of events, this is by far the worst episode so far.
The actress who replaced the princess is nothing like the first actress, none of the fire or sense of adventure.
There's just too much to get into and this episode is otherwise pretty boring. This really makes me question the rest of the show and I don't know how much longer it's going to keep my interest.
Andor (2022)
FINALLY! Characters with actual depth!
It took them the better part of 50 years, but Star Wars has finally introduced a story with characters that you actually give a crap about. Failure to humanize the characters is the biggest flaw I've always seen from the Star Wars universe.
Andor is presented right off the bat with several characters with a connecting back story that you want to follow and pay attention to.
Hopefully this marks the end of the cheesy star wars as we know it, because this is the tone and level of acting that it deserves. Real things happening to real people with real consequences that we can relate to.
Bravo Disney! 👏
Someone over there was paying attention.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Could be great, but needs some TLC
The show has all the elements of what I like about Cyberpunk, but it's overshadowed by a messy story, weird shot choices, confusing dialogue and sparse context.
I hope it gets a second season, I did enjoy it as a pair to the video game, but I hope the creators straighten it up some, because this is just an action-packed mess as it is.
One thing this show needs is to establish the world and the characters better.
Not everyone has played the video game and they just throw the audience into the middle of the world as though you should understand everything that is happening already.
They don't establish the corporations or their importance, nor do they do much in the way of explaining major character's personalities and history. The dialogue is just.. painful.
Westworld: Generation Loss (2022)
Wow, I'm speechless
I won't dare spoil this one for you!
So much happens in this episode. When I finished it, I actually looked up if this season only had 4 episodes, because this one felt like a season finale, lol.
If, like me, you were waiting for Westworld to bring the magic back... They brought it back.
The Man Who Fell to Earth: Changes (2022)
Beautiful Filmmaking & Storytelling!
I'm already impressed with this show, but this episode is a truly beautiful piece of filmmaking. The structure of the storytelling is unique and introspective, while still driving the story forward. The cinematography is excellent!
Halo (2022)
People need to stop hating on this amazing show
No spoilers here. Season 1 is 9 episodes and while not every episode is exciting, the creators know the value of world building and character structure, perfectly setting it up for a barn-burner for a second season. Something the nose-pickers in this review section clearly care nothing about.
This is without a doubt the best SciFi series on television right now, ever since The Expanse ended their final season.
Ditch the same old Star Trek shows like Picard and New Worlds. Marvel's Moon knight is pretty tame by comparison and just about every other SciFi show out there is struggling to be interesting or deliver something new. While the HALO franchise is anything but new, this is the first time a studio has successfully and convincingly turned it into a series or film.
This is an outstanding show and if we keep letting these stuck-up gamers review-bomb shows like this simply because it doesn't match their prescious game series note-for-note, we'll keep ending up with the same boring crap we've been force-fed for the last several years.
If you're one of those said gamers... Just stop already.
If you're looking for a great new SciFi show, this is the one you want. Period.
The Batman (2022)
Review from an amateur filmmaker
Reading through these reviews, it's clear to me that many people simply don't understand the hype with this movie. A couple things to note: Yes, the movie is extremely long (3hrs) and yes it moves at a very slow pace. For this reason I feel most people simply won't like it when other superhero flicks are packed with a steady storytelling method that moves the plot forward on a consistent time scale and enough action to get their heart racing.
This version of Batman is done very differently. This prefers the story and the sensation of something lingering just out of sight in order to create an impending sense of doom. This is a far more serious movie than it's predecessors, foregoing the generic comedy bites to keep the mood light enough to prime the audience for the next action sequence.
This feels more grounded than most other hero movies and this version of Batman even makes sense in a way, feeding you a tortured soul that walks a line between good and bad.
Now, what makes this movie truly standout is the cinematography. The filmmakers choose to use the camera to tell the story and limit the amount of digital graphics or CGI in the film. This shows a real passion for cinematography and because of this, the quality of the film will hold up longer than those films leaning heavily on CGI. A great example of this is how the original Matrix cinematography surpasses all 3 of the sequels in visual integrity due to the camera angles and not the graphics.
This Batman certainly isn't for everyone and that is okay, but the people giving this such poor reviews, I can only assume require instant gratification and don't much care whether the image on the screen is real or rendered.
TLDR: Be patient and appreciate the art and storytelling that went into this film. It's masterful.
The Great (2020)
What an absolute gem of a series!
Nicholas Holt and Elle Fanning are a magical pairing I didn't know I wanted! AAA performances from both, supported by a deep and charming support cast.
The sarcasm, witty dialogue, hilarious atmosphere of degenerates at the highest place in society is a satirical breath of fresh air!
And in regards to all those giving it poor reviews because of it's historical inaccuracies, ignore them. They clearly don't even know how to read as the opening sequence of the very first scene of episode 1, introduces the show as an *Occasionally True* story. They never intended for it to be accurate and definitely don't mean to take themselves seriously and I love every minute of it!
Ted Lasso (2020)
What a great show!
This is my first ever review here. Ted Lasso really surprised me. The show as many have already said has so much heart! The comedy is excellent, the current events context is on point and delivered in a very well thought out way. The characters are amazing! I really want to talk about all of them because they all do such a fantastic job, but Jason Sudeikis and Juno Temple really OWN their characters. Honestly, just watch the show. You won't regret it. I love everything about it.
