Theater Camp (2023)
Best movie I've seen in the theatre in a while
Theatre Camp is a parody of the powers in control in all institutions of America, in business, education, politics, technology, social media and the family, but the dynamics in the movie play out in a summer, sleep away theatre camp for kids. The same kids have been coming to the camp each summer and the ownership and management of the camp has been under the tutelage of one woman for a gazillion years who has just died and the camp is suddenly taken over by the former owner's son. The two chief acting counselors, a straight woman and gay man, are products of having gone to the camp as children where they met. All of the adults involved with or affiliated with the management of the camp are broken and damaged in profound ways. They lie, steal, cheat and put their needs before the kids. And what makes the movie so hysterical is that the writers have done absolutely nothing to mask the dysfunctional characters. The writing is truly brilliant and it's one laugh after another. Despite the dysfunction and trauma that surround the kids, they absolutely thrive and flourish as if to say that no fake and authoritarian.power can break the force of god, inherent in these kids. Such a great, funny movie with truly talented actors, directors and producers. Highly recommended.
Breaking Bread (2020)
Perfect antidote to being a COVID Pandemic funk!
This movie is a breath of fresh air if you have been indoors and alone too much during the pandemic, as positivity exudes throughout Breaking Bread on so many levels other than food. Oh, yes, the food is tantalizing, but you can also taste and smell the exquisite positive people and their connection to each other and how they have successfully made meaning from adversity, barriers, limitations, and the ancestors who make their debut and mark their presence and power in this movie. And, if that isn't enough and you have also been following the migration patterns and are seeking a new destination to call home, the landscape like the food is nourishingly palatable, specifically, Haifa will be within your radar and on your menu. The first thing I did upon returning home after seeing the movie last night was to soak a cup of organic garbanzo beans to make hummus: one metaphor in the movie -- "hummus has no borders." Loved Breaking Bread. There isn't a touch of Hollywood to it. The love and connections are simple, real, and authentic,
