Hotaru no haka (1988)
too bad it was anime
I wonder if someone had made this into a movie instead of an anime, how well and well known it would be. Someone told me it was the best animation ever, and well they are right and wrong. Most of us know anime movies to violent, provocative, racy, subversive, this movie is none of that, but instead a beautiful and moving piece of film. I highly recommend this movie to anyone, I believe a remake of this amination into a feature film would win some awards, the best animated movie ever.
The Matrix (1999)
ok, but not a top 100 film
Matrix is a good movie, and history will show that it is the movie that made the DVD, as people went out and bought players to watch this movie. Innovative stunts and filming, you dont even notice reeves as the poor actor he is. Fishburn is- as usual- strong, and whoever plays agent smith does a great job. the Computer graffics left something to be desired (im a spoiled STAR WARS brat), but great music and its paced well. I felt the plot was rather predictable (when i start saying whats going to happen, then it must be obvious) and the religious and philosophical aspects were less than subtle, and i defy anyone to say this movie was "deep." Nevertheless, along with Gladiator and Episode 1, the Matrix is a movie that should be in every dvd collection
One Day in September (1999)
commentary on commentary plus
First I would like to point out that for me, a 21 year old, One Day was my first exposure to the events, therefore it was informative, for myself atleast. As for the complaint about dehumanizing and downplaying the Palestinians' plight, I believe that argument is garbage. You would have to be LIVING in a vacum not to know their plight, and it's hard to argue that terrorists are human. Besides, the surviving terrorist spoke about talking and joking with the prisoners, a momentary respite for the viewer as it must have been for those involved. As far as absolving the Israeli gov't, the point was obvious and well made, no Israeli and even Jew for that matter could feel safe if the demands were met. And none of criticisms state provide any evidence for their complaints I might add.
That being said, as a Historian, there are some rather speculative aspects to the documentary. For example, Douglas states that the East Germans helped the terrorists scope the place out before hand, but it is unclear whether they knew of their intentions or not (ala the americans helping them in), which is a major fault in the fact presenting. Also rather curious was how Douglas tells how the plane hijacking was a scam, and then states the surviving terrorist confirmed this, which to me indicates they set up this scenario for the interviewee and he merely said 'yes.'
The main point of this documentary is for the viewer to ask how, not why. How could everything fall apart as it did? I left wondering how in Cold War Europe, an extraction team from East Germany, England, France, Russia, ect., could not have been employed within hours and how much did Cold War politics played into that factor. Despite its flaws, One Day is an excellent documentary, as riveting as it is depressing.
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Something for Everyone
My main quarrel with romance movies is that they are targeted for a specific audience (females 18-30) and from working in a video store that is the demographic who rents them. This movie I could watch with just about anyone, as it is a perfect balance of comedy, good drama, and romance, with great acting by everyone, and good directing as well. Call it a chick flick if you want, but it does not disappoint, 'Excuse me there are JEWS at my table' hahahahaha (by the way im jewish)
